Maryland isn't quite Duke, but it's not Miami either, and I can think of one name likely to be mentioned as possible successor, and it's not Mitch Henderson or Brian Earl

This is why, when people say Quakers are unimaginative, I tell them they couldn't be more wrong.

This is a huge opening for a once proud and mighty program that has fallen on hard times lately. My initial thought was maybe a guy like Wojo. But I doubt they go the assistant route even if he is a Dookie and I think a Maryland native. How about Jamie Dixon from Pitt?

I thought this was a fair assessment of Gary by a rival. I went to high school in PG County MD, just a stones throw from College Park, and I have watched the program through all the good and bad years, and all the coaching drama.
I have mixed feelings about Gary leaving. His histrionics on the sideline have become a liablilty making it difficult to recruit the modern athlete, so in that sense his era had ended. But he was fundamentally honest and an excellent coach. I hope they do honor him by naming the floor after him.
I hope his replacement can build a program using DC/Northern Va/Baltimore talent, because there is a lot of talent in the area.

When he was having all kinds of personality issues with the prior AD, and everyone thought he would be fired, Penn was looking for a coach and thought he would have been a great foil to Amaker. I really don't think he is done as a coach and would make a good Ivy coach at this point in his career. Since Penn, Cornell, Brown and Columbia all have new coaches, I don't see that happening unless James Jones decides he has had enough at Yale (no way Yale fires him despite years of losing; after all, he cut down a net for them).

Much as I've admired Gary Williams over the years as a straight-talking coach who seemed to get the best out of players less talented than those at Duke and UNC, I think that the Ivies would be too big a step down for him at this stage of his career. He doesn't need the money and he has nothing to prove.

Before you guys start putting Amaker into this role, take a look at this article.

There's no mention of Amaker as a prospect.

Who said anything about Amaker? My first two choices were Dixon and Wright.

I agree. I don't see what Amaker could offer Maryland over some of the others mentioned for this job.

As I said earlier, I think they'd consider Wojo before Amaker. Although I don't think either is viable.

How about JT3? DC's not far from College Park, MD.

Yeah, that would make sense...leave one of the powerhouses of the best b-ball conference to take over a 2nd tier team in league dominated by 2 teams.

I agree. Probably not the best move for Thompson. However, I'll bet he could use the opening as leverage for negotiating a fat raise.

My notion of Amaker was more tongue in cheek than serious, and the idea UM would hire a Dukie seemed far-fetched, but with every high profile candidate turning them down and "serious" sports writers mentioning Mooney, Chuckie Driesell, and the current assistant whose name I had never heard before and can't remember now, you have to start wondering.
JTIII isn't leaving Georgetown for UM, but to call GU a current powerhouse grossly overstates their current condition. Just ask Hoya fans.
