Bill Walton had bothered to learn about Mullins and mentioned his mother's background on the Canadian national team, the fact Mullins was an honor student at Columbia and that he is getting his MA in Public Health at Berkeley, among other things. Treg Duerksen went 7-10 from 3 in losing to UCLA in 2001, and Mullins came close to matching that, going 5-8 from 3.

Didn't someone on this board opine that Mullins should be nothing more than an instant offense player off the bench for Columbia?
He proved he was more than that for us and is now proving it again in the PAC-[some number I don't remember at this point but used to be 10].

As Cal closed the score, Mullins hit a three from one of his favorite spots (off center), to reduce the margin to 5. The much better Bruins extended their lead quickly.
He's now started 2 of the 3 league games.
Sunday's @ USC will be on a ESPN, 10PM ET

Mullins is a very good player to toss in the Cal mix offensively, because he can space the floor for Raab and their drivers from the wing and point, he moves the basketball very well, and he is low-maintenance in terms of touches (although he has a pretty good handle and can surprise defenses at times with his own drives). My guess is that any hesitation Martin had starting him had to do with defense, where Cal tries to be a very physical, in-your-face team and Mullins might be the weakest link (OK but not stifling). It looks like the offensive punch he adds to a team that sometimes struggles to score has been deemed to outweigh any defensive flaws he might have.

You do realize that I was complaining three and four years ago about Mullins starting, don't you?
As a freshman, Mullins started and played many more minutes than Maodo Lo, who went on to have a much better career than Mullins. As a sophomore, Mullins began the season starting and playing many more minutes than Mieko Lyles, who played very well for Columbia down the stretch, including in the CIT tournament. As a junior Mullins was hurt. And as a senior he played well, at which point I stopped complaining about him starting.
So in hindsight, I stand by my opinion that Mullins should have come off the bench his first two seasons at Columbia.

He's making threes at the same % as last year, 44, has been starting, taken out for only brief periods.
He's not been a star in most games but seems to have the coaches' confidence, as is usually on the floor at the end of close games.

You said what you said. If memory serves, you were even arguing for Kendall Jackson over Mullins. Let's not engage in alternative facts.

Nonsense. You're memory is failing you in your old age.
I argued for Mullins to come off the bench in his first 2 years at Columbia because we had several better options at the time, including Lo and Lyles.
And I argued for Dyami Starks to play ahead of Steve Frankoski his freshman year. In hindsight, I'm comfortable with that opinion also.
