Dead at 78.
I loved to read his stories in Sports Illustrated as a teen. As much as he loved sports and as well as he wrote about them, he always kept things in perspective. His iconoclastic NPR spot on Wednesday mornings was always a treat. Ironically, I learned of his death after viewing the recent film, "Obit" about the obituary department of the New York Times. Worth the admission, even at full price.

Two of my favorite Deford articles were retrospectives on the 1964 UCLA championship team and the UNC team that beat Wilt Chamberlin and Kansas for the title. Probably available in the SI Vault.

This week's SI had some excellent retrospectives, including a memorable article FD wrote in '81 about being a sportswriter.
