The Big Green picked up a three-star point guard from SoCal yesterday. Taurus Samuels from Vista High School has committed to Dartmouth for the Fall of 2018.

In April a writer for California prep watched Samuels at the Southern California Spring Tip-Off:
https://sports.yahoo.com/news/socal-spring-tip -off...
6’0†PG Taurus Samuels of Vista HS 2018 (Gamepoint Pump N Run 17U)
High IQ point guard who knows how to balance scoring and distributing. Plays with an unlimited motor and brings vocal leadership qualities to the court. Quick with the ball in transition, while still maintaining the ability to make good decisions on the fly. Very unselfish player who plays within himself and can make every pass in the book. Knockdown mid-range jump shooter who is improving his stroke from 3-point range. Active defender who understands team defensive concepts and fundamental defensive principles. Some question his athleticism and ability to finish over bigs, but he makes up for those question marks with his decision making.
The Left Bench also profiled Samuels, https://theleftbench.com/blog/2017/04/27/%EF%B B%BF...

We are still looking for a capable successor to Mitola. Maybe Samuels will be it.
Offers from UC Davis, Cal Poly, and Northern Arizona, according to the links.

Dave McLaughlin has picked up another three star recruit from California. Wes Slajchert, a 6' 4" shooting guard from Oak Park High School, has committed to Dartmouth.

According to Verbal Commits, Slajchert had offers from Colgate, Cal State Northridge and California Baptist. ESPN noted that he had offers from Columbia, Colgate, American, and Lehigh.

With two 3 star recruits for 2018, the Big Green are staying competitive with Princeton and Harvard.

I like the two Dartmouth pickups, but to say that they're anywhere close to the kids that Harvard and, particularly, Princeton got is a pretty big leap.

Agreed. Perhaps active would have been the better word to use.
For a team that started last year 0-9, ended up 7-20 and finished #305 in KenPom, a Dartmouth fan has to be pleased that McLaughlin has gotten commitments from two good three-star players for 2018.
FWIW, Dartmouth seems to be in the mix for two-star wing Sam Griesel from Lincoln, Nebrasa, as well - http://www.omaha.com/neprepzone/recruiting /boys-ba...

Yeah - Dartmouth has certainly stepped up the caliber of player it is pursuing and able to secure commitments from.
Will be interesting when I do my preseason sweep of how some of the frosh look to hear more, but I *really* like what Chris Knight brings to the table. Might need to add weight to be as effective as he could be as a frosh, but I think Dartmouth fans will see moments from him during the year that they'll really like.

It will be interesting to see how they compare to other recent Dartmouth 3 star guys -- Boudreaux, Sistare, Carter, Stones. There is obviously a wide range there in terms of how ready or able guys were to contribute.
The one thing to be cautious about is that the other public offers for Samuels and Slajchert aren't that great. So it looks to me like both Dartmouth's 3 star guys are significantly behind Princeton's 2 star recruits.
Of course, as a Penn fan, I feel a little like Ferris Buehler criticizing Cameron's car when I downplay Dartmouth's recruiting class. At least Dartmouth has a class.
I think Dartmouth has the 3rd best class so far, which is a lot better than they did with the class coming in this year (which I would rank 7th).

An update on Sam Griesel of Lincoln, NE.
http://www.omaha.com/neprepzone/recruiting /boys-ba...
The NebHSRecruiting site, has Griesel listed as the #3 player in Nebraska.
According to its evaluation - "Griesel is a versatile, athletic swingman who loves to attack the basket but can knock down shots from the perimeter as well. He moves the ball well and plays with good efficiency. Griesel has a lot of potential on the defensive end with ability to hold his own against bigs and stay in front of guards on the perimeter."
The site noted that he has narrowed his list to 5 schools - Dartmouth, Drake, North Dakota State, South Dakota and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He visited UNO for an official trip on September 14th. He has official visits scheduled for North Dakota State on September 30th and South Dakota on October 7th. While he does not have a definite date for Drake, he is in the process of scheduling an official visit. The website notes that he will have one official visit left and believe it will be used for Dartmouth. He has previously visited Dartmouth, while attending an earlier Elite Camp.

According to an article in the Houston Chronicle, Dartmouth was recently in the area visiting with Durey Cadwell. Cadwell is a 6' 5" shooting guard/wing, who plays at Klein Forest High School in Houston.
According to his coach, "(Cadwell's) real smart," Black said. "He's an Ivy League kid. In fact, Dartmouth came in (Thursday) to look at him. So he's really smart, cerebral, shoots the ball well, and he's about a 6-5 wing/two-guard. So I like his size and the way he's got a scorer's mentality."
He is a senior in high school and listed for the class of 2018. At this time, he is not listed with any offers.

Looks like Dartmouth picked up another recruit for the Fall of 2018.
Garrison Wade from St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Ridgeland, MS. He is listed as a 2-Star 6'2" SF, but local news has him playing on the wing.
Looking at the Verbal Commits site, this may have been Wade's only offer.
Wade was named onto the Clarion Ledger's 2nd Team All-State.
https://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/high-sc...
- Garrison Wade, senior, St. Andrew's: One of the top rising stars in 2018, Wade led St. Andrew's to its first state championship in school history with a down-to-the-wire win against Holly Springs. The long, versatile wing scored 10 of 12 points down the stretch in the finals and was the star all season for the Saints. -

On the football side, when these late signings happen, its usually because the guy the coaches were hoping to get ended up signing elsewhere. They have a spot to give, so why not give it to the guy who's begging to come to the school?
Hopefully he can contribute.
