The $$ to Allen aspect of this is obviously very troubling, but in the larger context this whole episode makes me chuckle.

Here we have someone who clearly is no academic slouch and the question is was the guy legit enough to play DI ball (probably not). Such first world problems, when most of the news we hear about DI basketball (I see you, UNC), is are these guys qualified enough to get in academically to the university and once in, are they maintaining their academic eligibility.

Many people could do well at Penn if they got in. The fact that he has a 3.57 GPA (and we are taking their word for that) is irrelevant. If he easily could have gotten in on his own, why pay Allen to list him as a basketball recruit when everything makes it clear that he never was going to play at Penn. The question here is admission fraud, not academic fraud. And it is commercial bribery with respect to Allen. I don't know--this doesn't make me chuckle.

No moreso than Trump's dad or any other high roller probably paying for a new building to let in their kid.

And let's not even get started on legacy admissions. You want admissions fraud--there you go.

Sorry, not even close. All of that is disclosed and there aren't bribes involved. If Daddy here had taken his stolen money and contributed it to Penn (and it would take at least $1 million these days to make it pay), he wouldn't have been purchasing the loyalty of Penn's basketball coach. You want to argue about preferential admissions? Fine--get rid of them all. But this is bribery and fraud, irrespective of preferential admissions.

Again, I'm with you on the bribery.

Maybe Daddy figured this was a cheaper way of having him getting in than having to donate a new building, who knows. It's certainly rotten.

Rich people will find every way they can to get a leg up if they have no moral scruples.

Finally - some investigative work by the DP. I was wondering why they wouldn't even make a few calls to get more info.

This doesn't have any meaty findings, but at least someone made a few calls. COBL has done much better work over the last few years than the DP.

Has the DP even reported about Williams' torn ACL?

The bribery should not be overlooked, if true. But I see Penn Nation's point about the humor of someone pretending to be a good athlete in order to gain an educational opportunity in contrast to the usual reverse scenario.

A writer at the DP talked to a sports law attorney about what could happen to the basketball team if the NCAA gets involved.

There has been no news on the outside investigation.

In some related information, a Miami judge judge threw out key evidence in the indictment against Philip Esformes while finding “misconduct” by the Justice Department’s investigative team. The judge, though, did not dismiss the indictment

This report from Bloomberg gives a more precise summary of the Magistrate Judge's recommendation.

The full text of the 117 page ruling may be found here. Most of the ruling consists of individually numbered factual determinations by the Magistrate Judge. The substance of the ruling may be found in the final 11 pages, beginning at Page 107.

The only thing I learned from the article that hadn't already been said on this Board is that coaches have to report income on a form to the NCAA, and if Allen failed to do so, it would be an NCAA violation.

We made the same point about taxes and the IRS. But not with the NCAA...

A fake recruit who gave Penn no possible advantage will not be pursued by the NCAAs. However, Penn may pursue it...that is to be seen.
