Was wondering if anyone was going to Delaware State. I'm taking the afternoon off, and should arrive about 2:30-3. I'm going to take a look around campus; after that, if anyone would like to grab a bite to eat and sit together at the game, I'd love the company. PM me if interested.

This is a game that simply does nothing for us. They are pretty consistently among the worst teams in Division 1. We were better off playing UMBC

If they are anything resembling the team I saw lose by a record margin to the Quakers last year, Mark Jackson will get plenty of PT.

As I recall, Jarrod Simmons feasted on those guys last year. FWIW, I think he looks much more accomplished this year.

Pretty much every player in the game for more than a cup of coffee hit a 3. At times, it was like watching the Globetrotters.

Had to look it up, of course.
10 different Quakers hit a 3 in that game.

Which I believe is an NCAA record. I will note that Penn lost to them in OT to open the 2014-15 season and barely beat them the following year in Dover. I recall that place as a difficult one to play in - there were lots of students and it was a small gym. Hope that the above predictions are right - it would be a good thing to have another game for the players to get in a good rhythm and have another chance to play against a zone (as they did on Saturday) which was a problem they ran into in the Virgin Islands against Kansas State and Oregon State and may see again from solid teams like Miami and 'Nova.

Box score from the game at Del State Donahue's first year---interesting that 3 guys who played for Penn are still on the team with major roles 3 years later:

That loss at home Jerome's final season to them was the harbinger of a change to come.

I'm not an RPI expert, but it is my understanding that coaches try not to schedule games like this because it lowers the SOS and thus the RPI. I know RPI isn't the instrument any longer used, but I believe DI SOS is still relevant. Unless Penn secures an automatic bid, this game is an obstacle to an at large NCAA or NIT bid, no matter how much Penn wins by.
I believe that the alternative are games against D3 teams (Stockton) or Canadian schools (like McGill).
Regardless, I don't think you want to be playing the lowest ranked D1 school - which happens to be #353 Delaware St.

No you don't, but the next game is against Miami.
And there is no chance for 2 bids anyway

I'm hoping this is the end of the series. Brutal game, and would much rather play a better mid major team. Would love to see even a Patriot team like Bucknell or Lehigh on the schedule. Tougher match up of course, but much more valuable if we win.

Agree about no 2 bids. I'm thinking more of an at large NIT bid. Please don't take this as indicating that Penn won't get an automatic bid to NCAA or NIT, this is meant as a general ongoing consideration of the impact of playing very poorly ranked Div 1 schools.

In the "it could be worse" category, at least it's not a home game for us.

Interestingly there are 15 players in their team picture but only 12 listed on their roster:
