He sort of lost me with the Bugs Bunny-Babyface Finster reference (I loved that episode).

No, the schools are not committing suicide because they don't care about making money and don't want to spend money on sports. Their brand is not dependent on sports success. They aren't spending on facilities---that's all donor money. And it's obvious that the Ivies COULD easily outspend just about anyone for players if they wanted to. They. Just. Don't.

They do very much care about making money, just not from sports.

How about this innuendo??

"Did Owusu-Anane also get an offer from Brown? Richard Kent thinks it’s possible. “It’s curious that the only Ivy player to date who has gone back was a highly coveted, six-figure player,” Kent said on Saturday. “It’s my hope that Brown was able to locate some donors who helped out with this process.” (Kent said it also was curious that Brown’s first-team All-Ivy guard Kino Lilly Jr., the league’s top scorer last season, did not enter the transfer portal.) Brown men’s basketball coach Mike Martin did not respond to a request for comment."

It's a mistake to underestimate how much the Ivy schools' athletic departments (and to varying degrees the school administrators, in general) are immensely 'proud' of all they imagine Ivy sports stand for and their part in it. They love the idea they're working in the D1 sports milieu without having to stoop to the levels every other non-Ivy does.

For me, this pride will inevitably lead them down to Division 3 status, which, when it happens, will have profound reverberations. It's always easy to say you don't care about something when you see the possibility of that something occurring as vanishingly small. But the Ivys' continued head in the sand approach to the changing landscape of D1 sports is only going to end one way.

They don't see a path to making money from sports, unlike research and marketing/finance.

Don't tell me a bunch of Wharton marketing people don't see such a path. It is a choice not to take it. After all, Penn was the first school to put college football on TV.

The only way to make money from college sports is to have a big money TV/streaming contract. There is no path to that in the Ivies. Zero.

Ivy's are decidedly not going D3. That's not going to happen. The coaches have an opportunity to recruit under valued HS players and, for some, portal entrants. The numbers are overwhelming and that will result in Mack, Wolf, Perkins type players to continue to slip to Ivy's. They simply have to adjust their ability to keep these players or find new ones each year (which can happen more than ever before). Ivy's might redefine the "one and done" mantra.

I don't think he got NIL money from a Brown collective. Owusu-Anane is only 1 year from graduation. Being offered 200-300K for one year at, say, Providence doesn't outweigh the long-term value of a Brown degree.

Now if someone like Mack was offered 500-700K per year for up to 3 years at Georgetown... yeah, I can see the value in taking that offer.

I believe Nana is a Canadian citizen. There's discussion on the P'ton board about NIL and non-US citizens,

Canadians don't need a visa, though, to be here.

The person commenting is an attorney who is seeking to develop an NIL practice. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean I must take such dire predictions by a person with an interest to heart.

"Adjust their ability to keep these players."

Is that meant to be a joke? All the good players are leaving and there's no opportunity in the IL to get a free education, let alone make money like every other good player in college MBB. So where's the adjustment?

Ivy MBB has seen an exodus of its best players in the last month, trying to spin this as a positive seems insane.

This nightmare will get worse. Hopefully, a bunch of good Ivy basketball candidates and their parents realize the only way to make this work is the traditional 4 year degree and then the fifth year Ivy hoop gift if there is a real Pro opportunity. If they can't see that, they're 'NIM-witts' anyway and probably better off elsewhere

This is the last year of "Covid Seniors," so 5th year players will be minimal from now on (only medical redshirts).

Honestly, I'm surprised the Ivy held onto as many stars as they did. Pierce and Lee (NBA notwithstanding); Poulakidas and Mbeng; Lilly and Owusu-Anane (eventually) -- they all stayed with their teams.

But that won't be the case much longer. If Ivy transfers play well for high major teams, their NIL offers will go up and the league will lose even more of its stars.

Enough with the nonsense, CM. There were 8 non-seniors on the first and second all-Ivy teams this year. Last time I checked, 7 of them were returning next year.

As I’ve posted twice before, kids going to Princeton, from families making up to $100k attend for free (including room and board).

I generally share the view that the sky is not falling, but we lost two
non-Senior All Ivies-- Wolff and mack.
