DP also confirms Kach's return, a decision which he says he made prior to Dunphy's leaving. This is great news. Unless Whitehurst develops some kind of stroke, he will be in jeopardy of losing his starting job, I would think.

I wouldn't be so sure foehi. Kach always seemed like more of a slasher than a jump shooter, which Whitehurst did better as the year went on.
Defensive ability is also a pretty big factor.

With a new coach, I would think that with the exception of Ibby and Zoller, all bets are off. Real competition should actually return to the Palestra. How refreshing is that?

On the other hand, you will have someone coming into a situation where, at least for a year, the blueprint for winning the league is kind of sitting there in front of you. Joe Scott is a pretty good example of what can happen if you get in there and mess with everything in that situation. This isn't going to be like Joe Jones or Terry Dunn coming in to give a program a fresh start. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if any competition ends up with the starting 5 that you'd expect based on last year's rotation. Obviously these questions will be a lot easier to debate once we know who the coach is.

With one of the three starting guards graduating, Kach's starting would not necessarily displace Whitehurst, nor would it necessarily reduce the importance of Grandieri in the mix. But - we are too far out in front on this one. Mike has been away from it for awhile. Who knows where he'll fit in next year.

With talent like Ibby,Grandieri,Whitehurst,Egee,Smith and now Kach, regardless of who the coach is I think we can all agree that the guard competition should be fierce.

If we are talking positions 1-3, then you have to include Tommy M in that mix, assuming he is healthy.

My point is in regard to the odds that Whitehurst and Grandieri are starters. Given that only 5 of the returnees were playing significant minutes during the second half of last season, I think it's pretty clear that there will be a lot of competition and opportunity for playing time, particularly if we assume the new coach will use more players. Don't you think McMahon will be in the mix back there at the 3 as well?

Based on what I saw last year it's hard not to think on him being in the mix, if healthy. We'll have to see which of the rising sophs are best prepared to assume more responsibilty.

I'm absolutely hoping that McMahon is a huge part of the mix. I was thinking in terms of twos and threes though. It'll be interesting top see if the new regime stays with the three guards (and sometimes four) or returns to a more traditional lineup. I just hope whoever it is plays a lot of people. BTW, any word on McMahon's health?

Just to keep taking the speculation farther and farther without a coach, I'm also curious if the new coach would entertain the idea of playing Zoller at the 3 a bit. In addition to developing the ability to hit the open 3 in games, he looked a lot more confident putting the ball on the floor last year. In addition to whether that's the best use of Zoller's talents, the question also hinges on whether the freshmen big men are ready right away and how much Votel and Lewis have developed.
My coachless guess is that Grandieri and McMahon are your 3s next year (and both guys really could play the position in either a 3 guard or a traditional set).

If McMahon adds some weight/strength while getting healthy, I wonder if he might be in the mix for some minutes at the 4 as well.
With Kach coming back and Darren Smith joining the team, there will be a lot of quality players competing for minutes at the 1-3 positions. I hope we do get a coach who will utilize the bench because I have to think we could probably pressure pretty well with all those guys available for minutes in the backcourt.

Regarding Zoller playing the 3... I certainly hope not. I think it is great that he has added the three pointer to his game, but he just does not have the foot speed to guard college small forwards. With all the other guys available who can, it would be a waste to play Zoller there (outside a few minutes maybe).

Another advantage of the depth and athleticism, especially in the backcourt, could be the potential to press quite a bit. If some of the sophs and frosh are ready for solid playing time, there are alot of fresh bodies that can be thrown out there and create havoc.
