If the earliest "likely letters" go out in October, what do coaches tell recruits who "commit" during the previous summer or even earlier as regards their admission, and on what basis?

...that they have spoken to the admissions people and that they can expect a "likely" letter to go out as soon as it is permitted to do so.

Not quite sure in which direction your snark extends, but what it really means is that the player keeps his grades up, doesn't get suspended for school, commit any crimes, etc.
