Penn plays Yale on Feb. 13th and Brown on Feb 14th at home and at Brown on Feb. 27th and at Yale on Feb 28th. Does anyone know anything about next year? I am assuming besides the Ivy and city games we are pplaying Lafayette at home, Monmouth,at Niagara, Rider,at Marist.

Lafayette is a home game. Monmouth, Rider and Marist owe us home games. We owe road games to Niagara and Wagner.

Temple and LaSalle will be road games. Villanova will be a home game. St. Joseph's will be a road game, which fans hope will be the customary split house arrangement at the Palestra.

Or current Quakers vs Quaker alums who are now on the Penn BB staff.

Then again, I'm not so sure that would work out so well for the current bunch.

As we are once again forced to wait for other teams to announce their schedules I have to ask, is there a single thing that Penn Athletics does with its fans in mind? I know we've heard tons of excuses about why we have to wait, but man are they lucky we're so loyal. At any other Ivy school our fanbase would look like Dartmouth's by now and yet here we all are still hanging on.

um don't you think it's already gotten pretty bad? I didn't put that much stock in summer league talk, but I don't think anyone has even broached any type of updates this year? not that i miss it, people would get way too enthusiastic about what someone like larry loughery would.

CoBL wrote an article about why there are no Delco Summer League updates for current Penn players this year. The relevant text:

"Those in attendance at this year’s Delco debut were certainly let down by the revelation that this year’s league was not NCAA certified, meaning that the league is going to have a different look to it this year. Because the league isn’t certified, that means that current Division I student-athletes are not able to play in it while maintaining their NCAA eligibility."

That's no excuse for our kids not playing summer ball. Both the Gathers League and the JSBL are NCAA approved (not to mention Delaware Pro-Am in Newark, De and the Rucker League in NYC) so the fact that the poorly run (for several years) Delaware County Pro-Am isn't permissible doesn't mean we shouldn't be hearing about our kids.

It's unfortunately a continuing pattern of the "Us v.Them" attitude that permeates the program.

Who exactly would you hear from? Do NCAA rules even permit schools to publicize the summer league play of their athletes?

I don't know of any such rule. I can tell you that other schools publicize their summer league relationships...here's one for Rutgers:

http://snyrutgers.com/basketball/rutgerss-r osters-...

In a quick look, I saw a piece on Duke and Seton Hall's websites promoting their baseball players' activity in the Cape Cod and other summer baseball leagues. When it comes to Penn, I see a black hole on information, both from the athletic department website or on Philly.com or other outside websites (for example, Monmouth (!) gets major coverage of its players over the summer in the Asbury Park Press). So we're just getting nothing.

Your link is to an SNY article. You know, the cable channel, not Rutgers university.

There is nothing official from Monmouth that I see in the APP coverage. It's just a small town paper that has no local pro sports covering a local story that involves players from the only local college team. So you know, not at all analogous.

The point of your anecdotal baseball evidence is that the same amount of searching apparently turned up nothing about basketball.

Do any of the other Big Five schools do P.R. around their current players' summer activities?

SNY and Rutgers have a contractual relationship. One would assume that if there were ever a rule that a school not promote its players' summer league activities, it would pertain to their TV carrier as well. And the APP has a Monmouth blog detailing its players summer play.

All I was responding to was your question about an NCAA rule---nothing more. If you have some information on this, great. If not, I don't know what we are discussing here. Certainly, in the past, we had information, through Stu if nobody else, on where our guys were playing and how they were doing. This year---nothing. I certainly would be interested in knowing how a few guys in particular---Louis, Jones and Howard, in particular, were doing.

So basically what you're telling us is Stu retired.

And yet you choose to portray it as some "us vs. them" conspiracy to withhold information.

(And if SNY was merely acting as Rutgers contractual P.R. affiliate by putting that roster info. In a blog post last year, why is there zip about Rutgers' players summer league play so far this summer on the SNY Rutgers blog?)

Summer leagues

The Delco Pro Am league lost its NCAA certification this year. So there is no location where Penn players are gathering for official summer league games. The league is continuing for, among others, the post-graduate players and the D-II and D-III teams who are allowed to play together as complete squads. However, no player with D-1 eligibility is permitted to participate this summer.

In previous years I reported extensively about summer league games. One year I posted game wrap-ups and other background information. I was criticized by the coaching staff, for various reasons, for making those posts.

In more recent years I limited my posts to schedule information. Fans were encouraged to attend summer league games and draw their own impressions of incoming freshmen and returning players.

Fans regularly attended these games, most recently held at Haverford College. In fact, we had fans who would drive down from New York City and North Jersey to attend these games. P38, you could have made the trip from Philadelphia to Haverford very easily. You chose not to attend these summer league games, perhaps as part of your protest that the games were not being held at the Jersey Shore.

That said, the issue of non-communication with and disrespect for the fan base is valid and it is an ongoing topic of discussion away from this message board. I am not a cause of that lack of communication for the reasons I have just explained.

Thanks Stu. I chose not to attend because the league was so haphazard that scheduled games did not occur, that 3 games were going on at a time and there was never any assurance that if I went, I would see a real game. It had nothing to do with the JSBL (although it is a much better run league). I did read your posts with interest, however.

That all being said, do you know if any of our kids are playing in the Gathers League or anywhere else?
