Time to begin planning for the two big games with Princeton and Penn next weekend whether the Lions are going to the Ivy Leagu Post-Season Tournament. Columbia has had some bad luck the last three games, but no one doubts that the Lions are a a very good basketball team and capable of defeating any Ivy League team including Princeton which we lost to by two points. Furthermore, despite the overtime loss last night, the Lions three best players--Petrasek, Smith and Hickman-- all appear to be peaking and are playing excellent basketball together. All three are terrific players. Furthermore, the Lion now have three more talented players--Tape, Coby and Voss- sharing the center position giving the Lions tremendous depth underneath the boards. Tape is an exciting player. Tape already plays the center position better than anyone Columbia has had in recent memory. Finally, Columbia now has another double digit scorer on the floor in Quinton Adlesh. When the combination of Smith, Hickman and Adlesh or Davis are on the floor Columbia can score points quickly. Hopefully, Meisner and Killingsworth will be healthy and ready to play next weekend.

It was a surprise to me to see so many tickets available for these two games. Well, I'll be there on Saturday, for one....

We are killing ourselves with missed layups and free throws. And we need to learn to close out games.

We must win 3 of the next 4 including penn. that means beating penn at home, brown away and either Yale away or princeton at home. Penn will beat us for a 6-8 tiebreaker. There is no room for error anymore, 4th place is Penn's to lose now, we gave it away last night and penn took it this morning. If we can't win 3/4 then I have to say our coaching staff and players really didn't deserve a tourney spot this year. We flopped and turned down the heat at crunch times.

Time to face reality. Too many inconsistent performances,

There were excellent games, some promising player development but...

One interesting statistic is our record in failing to close out games. In league play our biggest loss was to Yale by 9 points, but that is a little misleading because we had to foul at the end. The rest of our losses were all one or two possession losses, usually punctuated by critical missed FTs or open looks, or blown layups. So we were tantalizingly close, and missing one more playmaker and one more glue guy. If we can sweep this coming weekend we can turn around the entire season.

I'm not going to let you guys pull this reverse jinx after P38 did such a good job of doing it on the Penn board. You guys are still the favorites -- you control your own destiny, and you play us at home.

How do you figure that? With the way Penn is playing it's hard to imagine them losing to Cornell, and it is also likely that Columbia loses to Princeton. Even if Columbia beats Penn and ties it up in the standings the lions would most likely have to sweep yale and brown on the road to seal 4th place. That is assuming Penn takes down Dartmouth.

Both teams control their own destiny, but Penn has a one game handicap as of now.

Good bet that Brian Earl will have Cornell ready for the Quakers on Friday.

Oh yeah, that's a great bet. He really had them ready last week. It was 42-14 at the half.

If Penn plays anything like they did today, it won't matter what Cornell does.

So the issue that continues to perplex me is why -- no matter the competition -- we always play close games and why we usually fail to close out these games. We seem to get to the same place whether we are playing Princeton or Dartmouth. Either way we always play around the same level as the competition. One constant seems to be the overall strong play of our freshman point guard, who basically keeps us in every game despite his sometimes erratic shooting.

Not saying Cornell beats Penn, but I doubt the Big Red plays that poorly again.

That's a good bet since it would be pretty hard to play any worse than Cornell played at The Palestra.

I fully expect a close game on Friday night in Ithaca. the Quakers have accomplished NOTHING yet. They have only come out of a coma and gotten off life support. Still in the ICU.

Penn can go ahead and look past Cornell if it makes you feel better but Earl has full week to prep for Penn this time and the incentive of sneaking into a tie for the 4th spot. They were leading Princeton down the stretch the last time they played a P on a Friday. Just saying...

A team that started conference play 0-6 and that can barely afford to lose any more games shouldn't be looking past anybody.

Penn has the tiebreakers on Cornell and Columbia, only way for either team to get through is to beat penn. Penn are the favorites for 4th and the favorites to win Friday and Saturday, especially given their form over the last 4 games. It's an uphill task for Columbia, if we don't get to 7-7 while beating penn, I would count the tourney out.

This is one Penn fan that thinks next weekend will be a full on battle both nights. Cornell has shown it can play close to just about any Ivy team on any given night and this is at home for them. All Penn has done is come back from being dead in the water to being back in the playoff mix. We started 0-6 and equally have shown we can lose to anyone... it's far from over.
