Very weird to see him play true point when coming into the game. Missed a bunny but looked OK in his first stint today.

Doing a nice job penetrating through the lane. Missed his second shot--another layup bunny, but the next time down he again penetrated beautifully and drew a shooting foul.

Hicks with a great lefty drive and finish, then gets the Ivy/Penn props from Nantz and Raftery.

Great drive and pump fake by Hicks which gets Walton Jr in the air. Tony to the line for 2.

Just tuning in. Has Hicks punched anyone yet?

He's punched his ticket to the tourney at long last. And at times making Michigan look pretty silly, too.

Another strong drive to the hoop, pulls up to hit a tiny bunny.

It's such a difference when Hicks doesn't have to shoot/force all of those perimeter shots. He can concentrate on driving to the hoop from different spots on the perimeter--a much more efficient use of his considerable talents.

Hicks creates a turnover on a Michigan inbounds, leads to a basket cutting the deficit to 2. Now down 4 and time running out.

Glad Tony had the chance to play in the tourney. He acquitted himself well.

On Tony's last offensive possession, he drove into traffic and lost control of the ball (although Louisville retained possession).

On Tony's last defensive possession, his man drove around him for a score with 30 seconds remaining, earning Tony criticism from the announcers, and a reprimand from Coach Pitino.

Tony did not return to the game.

But did he draw any blood in the postgame handshake line?

Yes, the part of his game that was weakest was his defense (although he did have 2 steals, including the key late one that gave them a chance to draw even). That said, Walton Jr makes a lot of good defenders look silly, and it was a tough make high off the glass, on a day where he had a very tough time making any shot at all.

Am I the only one finding this absurd? A sub-500 ivy team could not find a place for a guard that played meaningful minutes on a top 10 team? Something is very wrong here.

This was discussed at length here a year ago. Most people give Donahue props for being frank with Hicks that Penn was rebuilding, that he would have to play team ball and have less of a leading role and that it might be in his interest to graduate and find a better platform for his game. He did just that and incurred some tough love from Pitino along the way.

There was more of an argument here about just how good a player he was---you and I agree on that. Hicks was a highly superior talent who, unfortunately, got no coaching at Penn.
