Earliest ever? Bucknell makes an offer to 6'0" sophomore point guard Evan Buckley of Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia.

That's an interesting offer, one that I believe is the earliest Bison offer ever. DMV Elite ranks him as the #17 player in their area, which is DC, Maryland, and much of Virginia. That obviously is very good - but there have been many other very good sophs with very good academics who did not get Bison offers. I wonder if Nathan Davis has some connection to Buckley that led to this early offer. Buckley is from west of DC, near the Virginia border with Maryland - an area ND knows very well.

Jameer, Sr. (35) must have been 18 or 19 when his son was born. I cannot imagine what it was like to go through college with a little baby.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

I assume someone really knows him well enough to believe he will meet the academic qualifications of Bucknell.

Not sure what prompted this comment. Our staff's unwavering dedication to academics is evident, and Jameer Jr is attending a very reputable private school on Philly's Main Line.

When a player makes an official visit, he is required by the NCAA to first submit a transcript. When the visit is unofficial, I don't think that is the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bucknell requested one. As BRW points out, he goes to a very good private school, so academics are probably not an issue.

Simple. How does an academic institution the quality of Bucknell extend a scholarship to someone who hasn't earned the grades or met the required standardized test scores for admission?

It's not a commentary on this young man but the process of early offers from academically superior schools. Most schools extend early offers on the hope minimum NCAA requirements are met to play. Bucknell's admission is much higher than NCAA eligibility minimums.

Can't Bucknell extend an offer contingent upon meeting certain standards? This seems like it would be a fairly common practice.

Yes, they can and they do. Also it is very common for prospective student-athletes to take SAT's early. Many have taken it by fall of their junior year, some earlier than that.

Thanks that's what I was getting at. I wasn't suggesting he isn't an outstanding young person.

It's also well known in the scouting industry whether the kid has academic chops or not. HS coached of recruited kids understand fully the academic situation of their kids and this information is liberally communicated. Hell, if you're seeing a kid for the first time and you know nothing about him it's likely you can ask the coach next to you (especially if its a PL or IVY school)if he's got a fix on the kids academics. This kind of info is freely available and asking is SOP
