I haven't been to a game at Towson since the ECC Championship in 1989. Wow, that was a long time ago!
I wondered what happened to the ECC after the PL was formed. Interesting:

It'll be like following a game back in, say, 2003.

Final lineup for the ECC before it vanished (1993-94) = Hofstra, Central Connecticut, Buffalo, Chicago State, Northeastern Illinois, and Troy State. Strange.
Final ECC lineup before Bucknell left (1989-90) = Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Rider, Delaware, Towson, Hofstra, and Drexel.
ECC lineup in 1978-79 = Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, St. Joes, Temple, LaSalle, American, Drexel, Delaware, Rider, Hofstra, and West Chester.

West Chester was before my time. I wonder why they dropped down to D-II.

I didn't remember American being in the ECC. They must not have competed in many sports.

West Chester remains a very good D2 program in the PSAC. I found it interesting Lock Haven is now D1 in field hockey. Bloomsburg will probably drop the D2 in wrestling soon.

I don't know how many sports they competed in, but they were an ECC member for basketball from 1977-78 through 1983-84. For all but the final year, the league had two divisions and the Bison only played AU once a year. The East generally consisted of LaSalle, St. Joes, Temple, Drexel, Hofstra, and American. The West for most of that time period BU, LU, LC, Rider, Delaware, and West Chester. The final year AU was in the league it went to one division as the Philly schools and West Chester had dropped out. The following year, AU left for the CAA.

I thought American was an ECC member earlier than that. I remember catching an American/La Salle game in the very old, very dark Ceremonial Hall at Ft. Myer in early 1975 when I was doing a "Washington Semester" through AU.
Five or six of us, including one or two other Bucknellians, went over to see nationally ranked La Salle, led by Joe "Jellybean" Bryant. Much to our surprise, American won. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that was an ECC game.

American was a charter member of the ECC in 1974-75. In its first year, the ECC boasted several great, young coaches who would go on to much brighter lights. Jim Lynam (American), Paul Westhead (LaSalle) and Don Casey (Temple) would all become NBA head coaches. Dr. Tom Davis (Lafayette), his then-assistant Gary Williams and Jim Valvano all became college coaching legends. Actually, Gary Williams first head coaching gig was in the ECC at American. He was the head coach when Al Leslie went off for a school-record 45 points in a big upset over the Eagles. One other coach in that first year of the ECC was Don Harnum at Delaware. He would later coach and serve as AD down the road at Susquehanna.

I'm not sure it was an upset of American when Al lit them up for 45 although Boo Bowers was a great player for the Eagles. Bucknell was very good that season, finishing 20-7, including a great win at home over a LaSalle team featuring Michael Brooks which had just beaten a highly-ranked Alabama team. Al had an unbelievable game and would have scored over 50 if there were 3-point shots.

Yes, my mistake. They were an ECC member but did not play Bucknell at all in league games until 1977-78. Prior to that, the teams only played regular season games against teams in their own division.

Similar style game and the analogy I thought of as well. But didn’t post since Al was a lot smaller and quicker than Cam.

Hard to tell, really. Al was teamed with some guys with different skill levels. Cam had three years with Mike and Joe and Bryson, so he was called on differently, not to mention the structured system Cam played under. Cam in his last year was asked to do more, even in the system, so that last year may be the most comparable with Al.
