What jumps out most from the KP.com stats is the same thing that stood out last year - this team is remarkably efficient getting to the line, and just as efficient converting from there. For what it’s worth, they also play really good FT defense, among the nation’s leaders in opponent FT percentage. (Perhaps attributable to the harsh opponent climate created by the Pitz).
Other notables:
They play at a high tempo, particularly on offense.
They’re a good defensive rebounding team - somehow.
They force turnovers at a pretty good clip.
They defend the three pretty well.
On the flip side:
Despite their success getting to and converting from the line, they aren’t real efficient offensively, driven by sub par three point shooting (which is just mostly Anderson, because the other guys with attempts all are shooting it pretty solidly).
They turn it over a bunch.
They get stopped at the rim, and don’t do much stopping.
Their interior defense - which shows up in their 2 pt percentage defense as well as the high proportion of opponent points that come from 2-land - isn’t very strong.
They are one of the youngest teams in the nation.
Individually, some of the stats are interesting. Anderson is unsurprisingly among the top quartile in a number of categories, most notably the stats getting to and converting from the line. Cambridge is 4th in the nation in lowest turnover percentage. (When do you ever see that from a freshman?) Sullivan is the team’s most efficient performer to date on offense, albeit in limited time. But the guy who is probably most surprising is Fuller, whose defensive and offensive rebounding rates are off the charts, and whose assist rate is very high for a big man. His shot making and scoring has been a problem, but this is a guy who does the other stuff at a high rate.
No value judgments here. Just interesting data - most of which makes sense, but not all of which I would have guessed.
