Is that a step up? I always thought that, if he moved on, it would be to a high major program.

It's a step up - to an Atlantic Ten program that provides a lot more funding for its teams than does Bucknell. He has applied for a number of high major programs but never got an offer. He may have decided at his age (55 I believe) that a high major offer was not going to be coming. I don't know if location was an issue but the Richmond area isn't a bad place to eventually retire in either.

By the way, Richmond's previous AD, Keith Gill, was forced out back in May. Gill had previously been AD at American.

Definitely not for football and basketball, although they are generally better than most of their league competitors. The A-10 (and CAA in football) don't have any sort of academic index. Also both allow redshirts for any reason - which is a major advantage. In other sports, I doubt Richmond's standards are as high as most PL schools, but I imagine they are closer.

What prompted the force-out of the previous athletic director?

I only know the message board rumors, but one factor apparently was Richmond losing their very successful football coach to league rival Delaware after the 2016 season. I believe that Delaware offered him more money and easier admissions standards, but Gill got at least part of the blame. Also UR basketball has gone downhill a bit since Gill arrived, with many blaming a combination of the AD and Chris Mooney, the coach. The two years just before Gill's hiring saw A-10 records of 13-3 and 13-3. Since then, their league records, in order, are; 7-9, 8-8, 8-8, 12-6, 7-11, 13-5. Not sure how much is Gill's fault - and they did have a very good 2016-17 season.

Beyond the above, I am sure there were other factors.

Further info, implying that no hiring is imminent.

"After release of that report, the chair of the 10-person search committee, Dave Hale, responded to a request by The Times-Dispatch for comment. Via e-mail, Hale wrote: “The university is not in a position to make a job offer to anyone at this time as the hiring committee has not yet met with any potential candidates.”

Richmond is Patriot League academic quality overall but I don't believe their money sports have very high admittance standards

Under Hardt's leadership, Bucknell has been extremely successful both in the classroom and on the court/field. In addition, Bucknell's facilities have been GREATLY improved. I think that his time at Bucknell has been a huge success, and I wish him good luck for years to come.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

B89-- totally agree with you on your comments about John Hardt and his time at Bucknell. But there are likely some football supporters who would tend to disagree in terms of facilities and overall W/L record. Scholarship era has not brought football success to Lewisburg, at least not yet. We have no playmakers on offense whatsoever and this season has been more down than up.

In Hardt's defense, he has certainly wanted to do a lot more in terms of football facilities - and likely could have raised a lot of money to do so - but has been hampered by the Administration.

Why would the Administration hamper those kind of efforts? Would appreciate any further details or insights.

It's pretty amazing when you think of it-- except for the Tom Gadd years (consistent success), our football program has been somewhere in the range of 4-7 to 6-5 year after year....

Because the first priority is building academic buildings and they don't want funds diverted to a football/lacrosse building or other major athletic projects if that might reduce contributions for their top priorities..

As for football, I can't give you exact breakdowns but here is how much was spent on football for scholarships, salaries, and recruiting expenses in the 2015 season, which is the last one with publicly available information:

Bucknell University $4,156,265
Colgate University $4,989,314
College of the Holy Cross $4,784,503
Fordham University $5,233,152
Lafayette College $5,078,526
Lehigh University $4,409,227

The Lehigh number is a bit strange/suspicious since they spent a lot more than that the previous season. As for the Bucknell number, there is no precise information on what creates such a large deficit relative to other schools - but I can't think of anything other than giving out fewer scholarships.

Note: During the glorious Gadd era, Bucknell was also giving out far less athletic aid than all of its PL rivals. Gadd did an amazing job despite a very unlevel playing field.

Wonder if Dr. Mike McFarland, Bloomsburg’s AD, would be a viable candidate given his history at Bucknell?

It is now close to 11 weeks since it was announced that Hardt is leaving. Even with the holidays intervening, I had expected a decision by now. I'd guess it should be soon, but I have no inside info whatsoever.
