The Lions are stinking up Hanover tonight in one of the most miserable performances in Columbia basketball history. First, similar to last year, we have a no-show by Columbia's best big man. Second we have a horrible off-key performance by the other bigs, Third, we are getting nothing from Hickman in his final weekend of basketball at Columbia. Castlin is keeping the Lions in the game with ten points, but absent a miracle the Lions are going to lose to a poor Dartmouth team. If Columbia loses tonight, a coaching change has to made because these players have not improved at all this season (and last).

Yes, that was a killer! Not only that, but it was an obvious mistake to even have him on the court. After all, Columbia had come flying back from a 17 point deficit with only seven minutes remaining in the game with Jaron Faulds playing center instead of Tape. Then, for whatever reason, Engles subbed Tape for Faulds even though Tape had played poorly earlier in the game, missing several easy shots and getting called for four personal fouls. Mike Smith got the ball nicely to Tape nicely inside, but he just couldn't finish. I'm not blaming Tape for missing the shot--he was double teamed, but why did Engles replace Faulds (4-4) with Tape 1-5? Anyway, with Harvard winning over Cornell in double overtime, I understand our guys have yet another opportunity tomorrow night to make good things happen. If we defeat Harvard, we get the 4th spot. Am I correct?

Yes. Columbia controls their own destiny. Win and you are in. There is actually one scenario where Columbia is in even with a loss.

So: Columbia in with a win, or if all 4 lose.
Princeton in with a Win if Columbia loses. Out with a loss.
Cornell in with a win if Columbia and Princeton lose, and in with a loss if Columbia and Princeton lose and Brown wins.
Brown is out.

It's simple now, if we win we're in. If we lose, penn must beat brown, Yale must beat Princeton and Dartmouth must beat Cornell for us to go through. Despite a tired Harvard team, tonight without meisner is a real long shot.
Brown and Dartmouth are out, Yale is locked 3rd. I would say, princeton, Cornell and Columbia all have around a 1/3 chance to make it.

As a longstanding, passionate, occasionally myopic and invariably glass half full type of guy, I don’t think I have ever felt more bummed out about the direction of the program since the little lamented era of Armand Hill. Either this team has a significant talent gap and Engles has performed brilliantly in coaxing five wins out of it, or this team has some excellent talent but has consistently underperformed because we have a coach who is in over his head. I tend to think the latter. Mike Smith, for all his flaws, has NBA level skills, is the fastest player in the league, can probably get open from outside whoever he wants, but seems to be underutilizing his talents. He also needs to refine his erratic three point shot. Castlin has shown late in the season why he is probably the best all around player on the team. The way that Engles has underutilized him is to me probably his biggest failure, apart from giving minutes to Hickman. And Meisner is one of the few players in the league who is capable of a double double every night. With his talent and better coaching (nobody non that staff is qualified to coach big men) he should have been even more productive. So I go into tonight’s game hoping for the best but expecting very little. Now I know how the Penn guys felt during the last few Jerome Allen years.

It doesn’t seem like Chet covers all the possibilities. Obviously the team isn’t where you want it to be, but that doesn’ Mean it has to be either an extreme lack of talent or an extreme coaching failure. Could be that, at least for this year, it is a combination of factors, and the overall mix isn’t enough to be more than a middling Ivy team. Also could be, as Dr. V implies, other circumstances at play.

It was not my intention to imply that I was aware there was anything mysterious at play. Since we were so close to the end of the season I simply wanted to have the benefit of season stats in hand, and whereas to the extent that I am loath to be critical of our players publicly, I am doubly so during a season.

Miserable game. Miserable season. I have to believe the Lions would have beaten Dartmouth with Meisner in the line-up, as he was one of our top two players all season. That would have changed the entire complexion of the season.
We’re rated last in the nation in luck for a reason.
On to baseball.
