5-9 Combo Guard Taylor O'Brien of Plymouth Whitemarsh HS north of Philly has reportedly committed to the Bison. O'Brien has to be one of the more talented players ever to commit to BU if the reports are accurate.
A few items:
- She made the 5-girl 1st team Pennsylvania 6A all-state team, joining Abby Kapp. O'Brien was the only junior to make either of the two top teams.
- She scored 663 points against good competition, averaging over 22 ppg.
- Also averaged 5 rpg, 3 apg, 3 spg. Hit 40% on threes (37-92) and 51% on twos, despite being the target of opposing defenses.
- Led her team to the quarterfinals of States in the largest school category (6A).
- Back in April, she already had A-10 offers, among others.
- A great athlete who is also one of the state's top performers in track and field (high jump, hurdles, etc).

For jkrun, O'Brien cleared 5-8 in the high jump in Districts and finished 2nd overall in that event in States. As I'm sure you know, the all-time Bucknell record in the HJ in 5-7, held by Amy Mantush. She also finished 3rd in states in the 300 hurdles in a very fast 43.89. Her fastest this year was 43.18.

Very impressive - both at basketball and T&F. I'll keep my fingers crossed she might want to high jump during outdoor season, but don't hold out much hope.

Taylor O'Brien is averaging about 27 ppg through her first four games. In two blowouts, where she played limited minutes, she had 26 and 21 points. In a 52-46 win over Pennridge, she had 31 points. And in a 58-52 loss to undefeated Central Bucks South on Friday, she scored 28.

"Tournament MVP Taylor O’Brien poured in 30 points and the Colonials used an 18-4 run in the second quarter to establish control en route to the PW Holiday Classic title."

An amazing game for Taylor O'Brien. Excerpt from article:
"O’Brien scored 36 points with four rebounds and two steals in the Colonials 57-55 win against Upper Dublin in double overtime Saturday night at Upper Dublin High School. She was unguardable for most of the night as she hit seven shots from beyond the arc and drove the lane on many an occasion.
O’Brien became the all-time leading scorer at Plymouth Whitemarsh with 1,624 points. The previous mark was 1,6215."
Among her shots was a long three at the buzzer of regulation to send the game to OT.

Reminds me a bit of Gabby Williams at UConn. A one point in HS, considered a possible Olympic high jumper, now an All American candidate in basketball. Maybe they can trade tips.

Yes, definitely some similarities in terms of jumping ability. Williams though was on a whole different planet than anyone else. High jumped 6 2 1/4 as a soph in HS. Just missed making the Olympic team.
Unlike Williams, who was not a good outside shooter in HS, O'Brien is a very good 3-point shooter. Being only 5-9, that is a good thing since she won't be able to score consistently inside at the college level.

My niece badly wanted to play for Bison but her skill set not quite up to current standards. She was recruited by several teams and from that experience and speaking to other recruits felt that Bison was ideal landing spot for strong players with good academics wanting a competitive schedule and a good job post graduation. She felt Bucknell would be consistent top 30-60 team that based on 1-2 recruits could in some years hit the Top25. My take away was that since she did get a scholarship at a comparible Mid-major, the current bar is set high.

O'Brien currently ranks #2 in Southeastern PA in scoring with a 24.5 average. In a game a few days ago, she had 31 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals in a 28 point win over a team that is 6-3 in conference. O'Brien's Plymouth Whitemarsh team is 9-0 in league games and 14-1 overall.

O'Brien is second in scoring in Southeastern PA with 23.0 ppg. Could be higher but her team has had a lot of blowout wins where here minutes were limited.

Three recent games:
1. Had 32 points and 11 rebounds in an easy win in second round of Districts. Hit 5 of 7 on threes.
2. Had 16 points in 53-50 loss in Districts. Deciding play was controversial technical foul on their coach for stepping onto the court to call a late timeout (or maybe after the timeout), for which a complaint was filed about the officials with PIAA.
3. Had 23 points in a 47-44 win in District consolations.
Going by Maxpreps stats, it appears she now has 1980 points for her career.

O'Brien scored 24 points today and sailed past the 2000 point milestone. Excerpt from article:
PW coach Dan Dougherty said. “It’s such an amazing accomplishment to think of 2,000 points. She scored almost 1300 the past two seasons.
“It was great. This was something she and I had talked about before the season. It was a big goal. I told her, ‘For you to get 2,000 points, we’re going to have to make another deep run in the playoffs.’
“It’s amazing because every team comes out with the sole thought of – stop Taylor O’Brien, stop Taylor O’Brien. She’s averaging 23.5 points a game this year. Her rebounds are up, and her assists are up. The program is the best it's ever been. It’s such a special accomplishment, and it’s something no one can ever take away from her.

Plymouth-Whitemarsh will continue its season in States, having done well enough in Districts to qualify.
With Marly Walls ending her career with 2370 points, I wonder how often any PL recruiting class has had two players who each scored over 2000 points.

Great honor for her. That is two years in a row for Bison recruits, as Abby Kapp received the same award last year. JC Show was also Mr. PA Basketball in his senior year.
Although the award claims it goes to the "best" player in the state, the criteria are actually more subjective, and the player who is ranked the highest in terms of college potential rarely wins it.
