Who are the front runners to replace Ira Bowman, or has the decision been made but not announced?

No announcement I am aware of, though I expect Mihalich to be bumped up to Ira's role and SD to hire a younger guy for that role.

Who would be top nominations from the Penn family? I'm limiting it to that because I assume it would be too wide a field to guess outside of the Penn tree.

Maybe MJ or Klatzky from the Colgate staff?

Please remember that we are filling the UNPAID assistant coaching position (assuming the promotion of Joe Mihalich, Jr.).

You fill that position with one of two types of applicants. Perhaps you find someone who is so wealthy that he does not need a salary. Bob Weinhauer hired Doug Collins for the 1981-82 season after Collins' NBA career ended.

Or, you find someone young, probably without a wife or children, who has minimal financial obligations, who will find a part-time job somewhere near campus, and who is willing to serve in an unpaid position in order to get a start in college coaching.

You are not going to hire an experienced, salaried assistant coach from some other Division 1 staff, a person who has family obligations, and ask him to serve in an unpaid position at Penn.

And that's also why (assuming he's ready for it) Mihalich should be promoted into Bowman's job. He's paid his dues, and Donahue will have a hard time getting good unpaid assistants in the future if they see that it didn't pay off for Joe.

Pretty sure that Zach observes the Sabbath, not a good look for an Ivy basketball coach.

This must be a change from when he played at Penn. I guess living in Israel will do that to some people...

Of course a few years ago Naama Shafir played for Toledo. She would play on the Sabbath but would not do any interviews and would walk to the team hotel (always accompanied by some teammates).

I'm not sure of Rosen's level of observance at this time, but he appears to be more religious than he was at the start of his college career.

"Besiyata Dishmaya", by the way, is Aramaic for "with the help of heaven".

To this Jewish Studies scholar, this is a clear indication that it was in Israel that he become more observant and that most likely whatever rabbis were involved were Sephardic.

Sephardic Jews use this "BS'D" as shorthand, often putting the Hebrew letters for it (Bet, Samech, Daled) in the upper corner of whatever they write to someone. Ashkenazi Jews (or those who are more ritually observant, at any rate), use the letters "B'H" (Bet, Hey) which stands for "Baruch HaShem", literally 'blessed is the Name', but really meaning 'Thank God'.

I'm also guessing the juxtaposition of Besiyata Dishmaya and playing for St. Benedict's Prep in the same sentence is a first.

Thanks. Was unaware of that Sephardic tradition. I'm certainly aware of B"H.

Zack did become more observant when he was in Israel. Whether that was because of the location or meeting the woman he has since marriage, that is certainly now an important part of his life. Saw one of his wedding pictures and, like his brother, Zack was in a black hat.

He was already on his way while still here. My next door neighbor is a Meor Rabbi and he heavily influenced Zack. Somehow I missed out on sharing a seuda with him.

The unpaid assistant has some camp imcome which provides some substinance level of income. So either a young guy or a former player who has savings. Big problem on the woman's side where you need to somehow juggle a full time job (League is very restrictive on paid assistants)
