All of the awards will be announced tomorrow. It is harder than most years to predict the top teams or even POY. My guess as to the top ten players, ie. the top two teams, in no particular order, are:
- Kimbal Mackenzie
- Nate Sestina
- Rapolas Ivanauskas
- Jordan Burns
- Jehyve Floyd
- Sa'eed Nelson
- Lance Tejada
- Max Mahoney
- Andrew Kostecka
- Will Rayman (or one of the Lehigh players listed below)
Others who may make some team:
- Jordan Cohen
- Kyle Leufroy
- Pat Andree
- Jimmy Sotos (would have had a very good chance prior to the shoulder injury)
- Matt Wilson
- Tommy Funk
- Sam Iorio
- Hassan Abdullah
- Justin Jaworski
I think the last two are long shots. Also if the coaches totally ignore OOC play, then James Karnik could pick up some 3rd team votes.

I think that this year was likely the toughest ever to come up with a 5-man team. I had the right ten for the two teams in my original post - but I couldn't have begun to predict the top five, other than Nelson and probably Ivanauskas. Had he not been injured, I don't have any doubt at all that Sotos would have been third team ahead of Jaworski, Funk, and/or Abdullah.
I can't really quarrel with any of the picks, given how close it was. Langel got COY award - and you can certainly make a case for it - but you could also make a case for Brennan.

I think that the list is very fair. If the 1st Team played the 2nd Team, I wonder who would win.

Interesting question. Other than the fact that the second team only has one guard, I think they would stand a good chance to beat the 1st team. In my opinion, Floyd is more dangerous than Ivanauskas. His problem is that Carmody totally misused him in the Princeton offense. HC had a very dangerous post player who can't shoot from more than 3 feet from the basket, and yet they mostly played him out beyond the foul line.

I thought Avil could have been a candidate for All-Defense team. In fact I think him a better defender than Bruce quite often.

Avi is definitely an elite defender. Wonder if his consistent foul trouble ultimately lost him a spot on the All-D team. Bruce is a better defender because he guards both on the perimeter and in the post, making him more versatile. If only he was around to guard Miles Bridges last year...

Not thrilled that all Colgate award winners are coming back next year. Has been interesting to see this team emerge.

Congratulations, Kimbal! You make us very proud.
BTW, 41.4% of all PL Men's Hoops Scholar Athletes of the Year have been from Bucknell. That is very impressive.
GO BISON!

Wow nice accomplishment for Kimbal. Just out of curiosity, do they consider academic major when determining academic teams scholar athlete winners?

Good question. I would assume they consider it - but there is nothing in writing. Still it seems like a lot of the winners have had difficult majors, such as electrical engineering, and I’m not sure if there have been any winners with a major such as sociology or communications or theatre. Jon Terry might be able to provide additional information if you ask him.
Fwiw here are the guidelines for determining who wins the award, from the PL bylaws:
c. Sport-Specific Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
1. For each of the 24 League sponsored sports, one student-athlete is recognized as that sport’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An award is given to each recipient. To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
a. Achieve a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (at the time of nomination) and
b. Serve as a starter or key player in his/her sport.
2. Sport-Specific Scholar-Athletes of the Year are selected by the League’s sports information
directors, who cannot vote for their own student-athletes.

Yes, I did see the criteria, thanks. I’m just curious if certain fields of study go into the equation. I believe Nana was History? I am not downplaying any major (funny you mention sociology and communications as they were my undergrad majors😜 but I upped the ante for my masters) just saying some majors are more difficult and thus more impressive. A 3.21 in biomedical engineering would absolutely trump my 3.3 in sociology/communications, for instance. But regardless, congratulations to all nominated and recognized student athletes!!

Does anyone know what McNaughton did to win three straight awards? Did he have a 4.0 in a difficult major?

Chris’ GPA was about 3.4, but as I am sure you know, the difficulty of an electrical engineering major makes his 3.4 more impressive than a 4.0 in many majors. That is especially true when you consider how huge the workload is in that major, which often caused him to miss parts of practices and to have to juggle a huge academic workload with the massive time commitment of a D1 athlete. Also remember that this award is intended for someone who combines strong athletic performance with academics. It is not intended to go to a mediocre player with great grades.
