Also, Columbia, Penn, and Brown are the only teams with two returning players on this list.

I find it strange that there was only one player in the entire league who made HM.

Yeah, that was my initial take, too. Some years they have quite a few folks named.
Just checked:
2016-- 4 HMs
2017-- 3 HMs
2018-- 2 HMs
Maybe they just wanted the algorithm to run its course.

It’s all based on points. Coaches vote for 1st Team and 2nd Team. Players on the former get two points and latter get one point. The top five (and ties) get 1st Team, then the next five and ties for the 2nd Team.
From there, any players with a certain number of points (I always thought it was two, but maybe it’s being listed on two of the seven ballots - I’m not 100% sure on that) get HM. So if there are five that get two points, then there are five. If there’s one, then it’s just one.
Also worth noting here... without the ties, there would have been 3 on HM, which would have seemed more normal.

Tape came on like gangbusters during the latter part of the season. Earlier in the year he had a few bad games in which he picked up early fouls. I expect him to continue his upward arc next season.

He averaged 16.3 ppg over his last 6 games. I expect that these numbers will constitute the floor of his performance next season.

I actually think he made a case for second team based upon not just his scoring, but his shooting percentage, his blocks, and his ability to alter opponents’ ability to drive the lane.By the time of the second Harvard game he was being doubled down low.

His major area of improvement should be working with his hands so that he is less vulnerable to being stripped.

He hit the last second shot to beat Penn in OT, which felt like a death blow at the time. Fortunately, we came on like gangbusters to capture the last tournament spot.
Columbia was a much better team than its hard luck record would suggest, but you people know that. When Mike Smith returns next year, you'll be in the playoff hunt in the place that Cornell is about to vacate.

Not to be a polemicist, but I wonder about the return of Smith. Might that turn out to subtraction by addition?
(OK. maybe I am a polemicist.)

No, that’s a legit question. Smith will have to blend his special talents into the strong team dlynamic that the coaches have managed to instill this year or it won’t work out.

I hope he can make the transition to a pass-first point guard, because the team learned to move after he went down, and I hate to see them frozen in place upon his return. But if he can't, they might move to Eddie Turner before Smith graduates. Turner is quick, taller, and maybe even better defensively, plus he doesn't have to unlearn a playing style. I am not saying this will happen, just that it maybe an option for Engels to consider.

Engles may need to have a conversation with Smith similar to the one Steve Donahue probably had with Tony Hicks a few years ago. It resulted in Hicks transferring, but was probably for the better in the long run for all concerned.

Fortunately for Columbia, Smith has been around the entire season, seen how well they did without him and realized how he can use his skills to push them to the top half of the league. With Hicks, SD had to talk to him as the new coach and ask the senior to trust the process in his last year of eligibility.
I would think that Smith will be able to adapt to the team for his senior year and then move on to a higher ranked conference for a grad transfer year. With it being his senior year, Hicks didn't have that same set of circumstances and decided to sit out the year before moving on to Louisville. An understandable decision and one that was probably in the best of both parties.

Smith matches up well against guys like Aiken, who are also very fast and very good ball handlers. I think Smith will be fine next year and will have a more rounded roster than he had his first two years. And if Turner is that good, maybe Smith will only have to play 28 minutes rather than 40. Some of the criticism levels against Smith in the past had to do with his late game heroics, at a point when he had already played 36 minutes and had to be exhausted. And nobody on our roster can handle the ball like Smith, or has his speed.

Stefanini's experience this season as a PG may be helpful in allowing Columbia to play more of a two-combo-guards approach (maybe one leaning a bit more to PG). If those guys can learn to alternate the playmaking and shooting roles, finding open spots and passing to one another and other teammates, it could be a challenging backcourt to guard.

I also expect significant improvement at the SG position from Bibbs and Ellis. And we have a very good SG recruit in Jack Forest. Tape, Nweke and Brumant are a very good front court rotation. I would like to see more production from Killingsworth. We should have a very good 8 or 9 person roster if Turner is ready for some minutes at PG.
