Five Bison (4 men, 1 woman) are competing in the NCAA 1st round meet. Maura Fiamoncini got a monster 1st throw with a season best 176-9 to take the lead. This practically guarantees her a trip to Austin for the championship meet.

Maura throws Thursday night in the championship final in Austin. She has the 6th longest throw coming into the meet. T&F News has picked her to finish 8th. The top 8 receive 1st team All-American recognition.

The University of North Florida here in Jacksonville hosted the First Round meet. I was having a beer at Green Room Bewing in Jax Beach and had a conversation with a man who was an official.

He said one of the things he enjoyed the most was watching the passion and joy that the smaller programs had at being able to compete on such a high stage. It's awesome to see someone like Maura not merely compete but make All-American status.

Another amazing thing about Fiamoncini, other than being so good for a small school, is her height. She is 5-2 in an event that is dominated - like baseball pitching - by taller athletes with long wing spans. Fiamoncini is such a good athlete that she averaged 19 ppg as a soph and 17.5 ppg as a junior on the basketball court - despite playing with a very bad knee. After her junior year, she had to have the meniscus removed and was forced to give up basketball. She was her area's POY in basketball as a soph, despite being listed as 5-0 in height at that point.

Besides the PL meet, qualifying for this meet is always a huge goal for our athletes. It's a great experience for them to compete against top athletes from P5 schools.

The PL has a record 8 competitors in the final round this year. Seven are men plus Maura. Navy's 4x400 relay qualified along with a javelin thrower. Army qualified a javelin thrower and a discus thrower. The PL had 8 discus throwers qualify for the first round, including five(!) from Army. The level of competition in the PL has improved dramatically in the past 2 years.

Just heard that the women's javelin has been moved to Friday at 3:30 ET due to weather.

it looks like Maura placed 9th with her best throw, 52.66m (172.9 ft), still a quality effort, and with good health 2 more years for the Bison. Well done young lady.

Very well done - and she is again a Second Team All-American. But it must hurt a bit to have missed First Team by a mere 9 inches.

Last year she finished 13th, so she did improve by four spots.

Maura had a very consistent series, with four throws over 168' but, as the article notes, didn't hit the one big one she needed to move up a few spots. Still a great performance.
