Ha, this only fuels my friendly hatred for the Big Red. As someone born and raised in Charlottesville, Va., the only place I might dislike as much as Cornell is Tech.

Courtney did spend three years at UVA, compared to less than one at Tech. I'm thinking you are just looking for reasons to dislike him.

His claim to fame seems to be recruiting; he apparently played a large role in signing the George Mason class that went to the Final Four. According to BRF, he was the players' choice. Not sure if that makes me happy or not.

He's talking about playing 40 minutes of pressure defense (40 minutes of heck, maybe?). Has any Ivy coach tried this? I can't think of any. Sounds exhausting over a Ivy road trip weekend, but could be entertaining.

Looks like they went with recruiting as their number one concern. Makes sense. No idea what his Xs-and-Os aptitude is, but I didn't know much about Sydney Johnson either. Considering he's never head-coached before, there's nothing to much to say except: play the games and see what happens.

He coached under Laranaga at Mason and I think he just hired Laranaga's son. (I don't remember how long they overlapped there, but I think junior played in Europe when Courtney was on vacation and hosted the Courtneys on the trip)

As I read BRF, Courtney lost his first two recruiting battles: Albrecht (to Brown) and Kevin Thomas (to Tulane). While I'm sure there are a myriad of reasons for both, for a coach who was promoted as a master recruiter this was not the start I was hoping for.

He just started, and picked up these recruiting pitches in the middle. I don't think it's fair to judge him so early.

With Cornell having the best returning backcourt - I'm sure I read that somewhere - Albrecht may have figured he'd have a better chance to step in immediately at Brown instead of battle a handful of potential All-Ivy guards at Cornell.

Yes, I agree with Silver Maple on this one. Coach Courtney gets at least a year or two in my book to establish his recruiting links and get lads headed toward Ithaca under his watch.

As for Albrecht going to Brown, it is fair to note that Cornell projects to have a 16-19 man roster this year and next, while Brown looks as if they might only be going to carry 12 or 13, as they did last year. "Best backcourt [or not] at Cornell," the numbers favor Albrecht getting PT at Brown.

Given Albrecht's apparent talent level and achievements at Toledo, I don't think he would be worried about earning playing time at any of the Ivies.

I'm still pretty confused as to what his talent level and achievements are. He's almost allergic to rebounding, he turns the ball over too much for a pure shooter and he has little threat of a credible dribble-drive game (as evidenced by his horrible 2-pt shooting percentage).

His three biggest games came against his three best opponents (Cincy, Michigan St. and Cornell), which shows that he has very little fear of big time opponents. But once you factor in TOs, only the Cincy game would be considered a very good performance.

I just don't see how a guy that played 12 mixed-bag games for a team which was worse than 7 of the 8 Ivies can clearly be good enough to dictate his playing time at any league school.

By that standard then Allen must be one of the best coaches in the League since he came in in middle relief on a number of Penn's commits. It's the nature of recruiting that when you come in you have to pick up where someone else left off. I agree that it's by no means worth dinging Courtney over - but it wouldn't have been terribly unexpected if things had gone Cornell's way either.

Would you just cut that out? Most Ivy coaches think he's All-Ivy material. That's all that matters.

How about if I agree that he will most likely, at some point in his career, score an All-Ivy amount of points per game. That's often what gets you on those teams anyway.

Who cares? It's not as if he's not as good as Anthony Gatlin.

I'm certainly not writing Courtney off -- he isn't the first coach to lose a recruit to a scholarship school and who knows how much Cornell really was in the mix with Thomas. Albrecht is a little more perplexing if he truly was "committed" to Cornell, but who knows? If Courtney is the recruiter folks at George Mason say he is, these two battles will be long forgotten. Still, I'll admit to being marginally less enthusiastic than I was a week ago.

In the BRF venacular, "potential all-Ivy from the moment he suits up" means "could be a decent player." You just have to learn to translate. Anyone who starts as a freshman in the MAC (even an awful MAC team like Toledo) has that potential in the Ivies. I remember Albrecht as a shooter, but little else. You have to think he has the potential to be coached up in other aspects of his game -- but he certainly has one skill that Brown can exploit immediately.

I dont think Courtney could have done much, Albrecht had problems with the Toledo coach and wanted to go somewhere he was comfortable so once Donahue left he jumped ship

Apparently, Albrecht wasn't the only one who had problems with the Toledo coach.

Former Cornell coach Bill Courtney will be named the Associate Head Coach at DePaul. This will be his second time working on the staff of Dave Leitao. From 2006-2009, he was an assistant for Letiao at the University of Virginia.
