Hoffman's Gill St. Bernard's team beat St. Anthony's 58-51 in a full scrimmage on Wednesday. Regular timing and rules. St. Anthony's was 33-0 last year - #1 in the country in some rankings - and is a preseason top 10 in most rankings.

GSB plays Oak Hill, who is ranked #1 by USAToday, later this season. Also has a few other tough tournament games. Will meet two of NJ's top four in the regular season and could well fact St. Anthony's again in the State Parochia B final. They should breeze through their county league games however.

Senior forward Dominic Hoffman (22 points, 10 rebounds), senior guard Alex Mitola (21 points, 3 assists) and guard Jon Schreer (8 points, 12 rebounds) also had big days for Gill, which jumped out to an 11-0 first-quarter lead and held an eight-point advantage with three minutes left in regulation.

Boy, that's really impressive numbers against that caliber of opposition. I have to guess he was matched up with Gathers a fair amount. Gathers, for those who don't know him, reportedly has offers from Duke, Syracuse, UConn, St. Johns, Texas, Memphis, etc.

Too bad they couldn't hang on. A win would have really helped put them on the national map.

City of Palms Free Throws:
Dominic Hoffman will have a very successful career at Bucknell. The 6’7” big man didn’t back down from the challenge of Ricardo Gathers and got the best of him on many occasions……. Kansas, Florida, and LSU had assistants planted in the front row for the first tip to watch Ricardo Gathers……

Thanks. That's a nice stat line, to say the least. Stats of all games are now available on their website:

http://cityofpalmsclassic .com/stats.php .

GSB played Games 1, 6, and 23. Hoffman thus far is 17-27 from the field and 13-15 from the line. Also has 29 boards and 13 blocks in the three games. GSB has had a bit of a respite in their second game but the Lake Wales team they beat yesterday appears to be a good team.

GSB plays in the consolation championships this afternoon vs Salesian, a very strong program from the San Francisco area. Salesian has a five star junior wing, a good 6'6" forward, and several other players mentioned by Scout/Rivals/etc. They also have a 6'8" 300 pound center who committed to Cal for football - turning down USC, Stanford, and many other strong west coast programs.

Oops. It was actually Blanche Ely they played and they lost by four. PF's were 26 on GSB and 13 on Ely. Two GSB players fouled out and Hoffman had his minutes limited to 25 (four fouls). He ended up with 10 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks.

In the second quarter it was the 6-foot-7 Hoffman’s turn. He grabbed one of his 12 rebounds for a put-back that provided Gill St. Bernard’s, No. 3 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, with a 39-16 advantage. Hoffman, who entered this season with 1,305 points, is headed to Bucknell next season.

If there was any possible way to land Sina, you can bet BU would have been recruiting him. Sina, who is a junior now, committed to Alabama during his sophomore year before subsequently decommitting. Has reported offers from Rutgers, Seton Hall, St Johns, Cinci, UVA, and a bunch of other strong programs.

Well, the biggest star in this game was a big man by the name of Dominic Hoffman who will soon become a nightmare for all the coaches in the Patriot League once he arrives at Bucknell in late summer. The game was the best of the day and it really wasn’t close — Mergen Sina from St. Bernard’s coached the hell out of his team and they responded by playing harder and smarter than Mater Dei and ultimately being rewarded with a much deserved W in overtime.

Dominic Hoffman 2012 6’7 Center (Bucknell)
Hoffman might be 6’7″ but he plays 6’10″. High energy player with a motor to match. Crashes offensive boards. Runs rim-to-rim. Blocks a lot of shots with his timing and long arms. Hits 18 footer. Has post moves and counter post moves that he uses to score consistently down low. Excellent in the two man game with either Jaren Sina or Alex Mitola all night. Would Not Let His Team Lose! Finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. Outstanding performance of the day (along with Kris Jenkins).

I do not actively follow the recruiting posts on this forum, so I am looking for some input from those of you who do...Would I be correct that Hoffman sounds like more of a PF than a C, and thus a potential PF replacement for Willman in two years? If so, do we have any centers signed for the next two classes who could potentially replace Muscala and Fitzpatrick in two years?

Just my own thoughts:

1. Yes, Hoffman appears to be more of a PF, although if the BU press release on the signees is accurate he could be as tall as 6'8". With his size and skill set, I imagine he could hold his own at the five against almost all PL centers.

2. Currently there are no centers signed. Need to sign at least one, if not two, from the current H.S. juniors. Fitzpatrick, however, is only playing his second year - even though he is an academic junior - and could return to play center for the Bison for a year after Muscala graduates. No idea if that will happen but that might be an attractive option for him if offered a scholarship to return for a final year and a chance to earn a Masters.

Agreed on the need for a 5. Might want to look down Rt45.Alexis from PSU is not going to have his scholarship renewed and is a Wilkes-Barre native. From the little I've seen of him he may not be the best fit for for the BU offense, but he's a big body.

There have also been rumblings that Ackerman might be on the way out as well for the Nits to clear another scholarship. He had been interested in BU prior to the PSU offer.

I would love to add Ackerman, and iirc his HS or AAU coach had a Paulsen connection (JPM?). The only problem is that BU has no scholarships available for an incoming transfer.

Now if the coach were Jeff Jones, he would probably run a player off the team to free up a spot - as he has supposedly done before - but I don't know if BU would do that. Of course there is always a chance that someone might opt to leave for more playing time, but that rarely happens at BU.

Ackerman played for Mike Crotty on the Middlesex Magic AAU team in Massachusetts. Crotty was the four- year starting PG on Paulsen's National championship team at Williams.

Great point 137. Forgot about the transfer year in counting towards the scholarship limit. The good news is when you review the roster there is really no underclassmen you can imagine moving on...since they have all contributed in one way or another. Starkey sticks out somewhat, but there are a logjam of good upperclassmen bigs in front of him. Good problem to have.

Excerpt from ESPN insider article entitled "Future BracketBuster Stars" regarding Hoffman: "Hoffman committed last April, so his continued progression flew a little under the national radar but he's a guy who would be widely pursued by Atlantic 10 programs if he were still available. As a result, he has all the tools to step right in and help Bucknell stay atop the Patriot League. He's tough, skilled and super smart. He throws his body around to bang inside, can score with his back to the basket, step out and make 3s and is also a terrific passer for a frontcourt player."

Yes I'm sure many A-10 programs would want Dom right now. maybe even a few teams from higher leagues too.

Dom had a scholarship offer from LaSalle, among others, back in March before he committed to BU. Schools like LaSalle don't make offers to marginal players in the middle of their junior year.

NJ.com lists Hoffman as the 7th best senior in N.J. Also 6th on their all "double-double" team.

Note that another top ten player is Carson Puriefoy, son of BU great Cal Puriefoy. I wish BU could have landed him, but he ended up signing with Stony Brook.

Puriefoy would have been great, but my understanding is there were offers out on the table to several guards with the scholarship going to the first that committed. Frazier commits early and got the 'ship.

Not saying it was the best strategy, but fairly certain that is what happened.

That sounds likely. Won't be able to judge for a few years - but right now I think I'd choose Puriefoy due to his ability to score.

And I know Mattie G would have liked to see a Bishop Eustace alum on the Bison roster.

Being a native of South Jersey, it would be great to have a player from Bishop Eustace playing for the Bison. It would be yet another reason for me to get excited about Bucknell hoops.

Whereabouts, 89? I'm from Camden/Pennsauken.

I'd certainly accept a Eustace player because he'd now be a Bison, but it might take me a few games before I warmed up to the idea.

Hey, I watched some game action of the Hoffman videos that were posted. Any reactions from those who watched most or all of the footage?

Anything DOM-inating on these clips? Just wondering if this kid has star potential. Sounds like there is excitement about him and his HS caliber of competition is high.

Really only watched the first 4 minutes or so. Good positioning on the defensive end but the one thing that stood out to me was a shot he took off the dribble. Nothing fancy, no shake and bakes but the fact that he was willing to shoot straight off the dribble is something we haven't seen a lot of, especially from big men.

From the various clips I've seen and reports that I have heard, I think Dom is similar to Willman - but may end up with a few more rebounds and a few more blocked shots.

He sounds like more of a banger - his shoulders are certainly pretty broad and he's got realy long arms. He also might be the kind of kid who can put on a few pounds of muscle in the gym to help him battle down low.

Not that it matters much, but based on his solid play this year, espn bumped him from an 80 to an 85 on his recruit evaluation.

He definitely appears to be a stronger version of Willman...perhaps not the quality jump shot of Joe, however. And he seems to have the type of frame to add even more weight and muscle.

So with our entire backcourt coming back, do you see Hoffman cracking the rotation, based on what you have seen thus far? And where does Starkey fit in with the arrival of Dom?

Hoffman tonight had 9 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists as Gill St. Bernard started play in the NJ tournament with a come-from-behind 63-45 win over St. Patrick's - who has been a national power in hoops for many years. Sadly, this was St. Pat's last game, as the school is closing at the end of the year due to financial issues.

Of course I meant frontcourt, not backcourt. As for moving ahead of Starkey, Corey has not looked good the last few times he's been on the floor, albeit in short sequences. If you notice the body language of Starkey, Klebon, and Leo during games, they almost seem disinterested, often not paying any sort of attention to team huddles. I'm sure they realize they are only getting in the game if it is a blowout, but still, they could show a bit more interest in what's going on.

Being in that position is tough, no doubt. But that points out one of the most impressive things about Enoch Andoh. Knowing that he is going go see few, if any, minutes, he still is the team leader in terms of enthusiasm. My hat is off to him.

I got a glimpse of him today and he was doing his thing, cheering them on. Not as painful to sit when your team is winning. Have you guys seen his father at the games? Enoch is a wonderful young man.

So, the article says that Hoffman was 8-10 shooting, but somehow, he ended up with only 14 pts. Strange. . .

Another nice game. Just to clarify, the final they are in is for the South Jersey Non-Public B title. If the win that game, next up is Bob Hurley Sr's St. Anthony squad, who will likely win the North. St. Anthony is in the top three in the nation in most rankings and undefeated for the year. Their star, 6'8" Kyle Anderson, is viewed as the second best player in the country by Rivals.

BTW, if Gill SB happened to upset St. Anthony, they would then be in NJ's Tournament of Champions, where they could play a couple more games.

Wow! Gill St Bernard, who is ranked #5 in NJ, beat #6 Trenton Catholic 71-70 in OT. Gill trailed 16-2 after one quarter, and they still trailed 39-32 entering the fourth quarter - before a 29-22 quarter drew them even. Hoffman had 18 points and 9 rebounds.

According to one article Hoffman had 20 and 11. But, whether he had eight or 11 rebounds or 18 or 20 points, it was a good night at the office for him against a really good Trenton Catholic team.

To confuse things a little more, the play-by-play listed above has him for 22 points. Also the box score that originally had him with 9 rebounds has now been changed to 11. I think it's safe to say he had at least 20 points and likely 11 rebounds. And, as you point out, against a very good Trenton Catholic team.

And Mattie, to make it an even better day for you, Bishop Eustace lost in OT in its Class A tournament game.

A trivia note for you So Jerseyans, Trenton Catholic Academy has only had that name for a few years. It used to be known as first, St Anthony's HS, and later McCorriston HS. I have a lot of family alums. I went to the public HS 3 miles down the road.

Raymond, I grew up making monthly trips to visit my Polish grandmother who lived on Indiana Ave. in Trenton near St. Hedwig's church.

It is a small world.

No, Raymond, it is not the same Trenton Catholic that closed in the Sixties. Recycling the name incenses my uncle, a TC alum and hs football All American who played at Villanova.

89, I know St Hedwig's well!

GSB had 8 points at the half. At one point near the end of the half, they reportedly were 1-13 on threes - which is usually their strength.

Bob Hurley Sr. says this St. Anthony team is the best defensive team he has ever coached - which says a lot considering how many national top ten teams he has coached. This year's team is ranked #1 nationally by some. They are giving up 35 ppg on the year and 30 ppg in the state tournament.

St. Anthony's has always had great defense. Their quickness is almost always what sets them apart from other teams - there's just no way omany other teams can match up in that regard. Of course they have some great shooters and the like, but their quickness is just frightening at the high school level.

Nine points and 10 boards in a game like that isn't half-bad.

Article on Gill St. Bernard's season. Bob Hurley had this comment about them:

"This is a really good high school team that shoots it so well,” Hurley said of Gill St. Bernard’s. “I watched their warmup and in the 12 minutes they were shooting they must have shot 80 percent. I was suffering. They run great stuff to get 3’s. Hoffman has the best pressure release in the whole state.”

St. Anthony, btw, beat Atlantic City 72-42 in the semis of New Jersey's Tournament of Champions yesterday. They face Plainfield for the all-group title on Tuesday night. St. Anthony's has now won 63 games in a row, including a lot of games against strong teams.

He is a big kid with long arms, and he looks like he could fill out even more. I don't see him getting out-bodied very often in a Bison uniform.

I've been excited about this kid for a while now, and the season he had (15.8 ppg, 11 rpg, 2.6 apg, 2.5 bpg) is setting him up nicely for his arrival in Lewisburg.
