Wow -- what news. Makai Mason projects a lot of confidence when playing. Coach K stopped him after the game to tell him how much he admired Makai and his father. Coach told Makai that his dad was one of the most impressive fathers that he had ever met. He also indicated that if Tyrus Jones did not come to Duke, Mason may have received an offer to play at Duke. Rather baffling that he was labeled a 2 star recruit. |

He's going to pull back, almost certainly, but this is often done to get on the radar going forward and to understand what scouts would want to see. It's a "why not" move. |

They want to see him grow three inches, probably. That, and get better at shooting from extreme range to set up his mid-range game. |

Yeah.... So.... Thought he was great his year, but pretty far away from NBA at this point so this seems like a year early to even test the water. |

It is true that Mason's height will clearly work against him if and when he tries to play at the next level. He certainly demonstrated in the Baylor game that he has a quick enough first step and a stutter move that allows him enough room to get off his shot against very good and athletic college defenders. His play against Lo this year also confirmed that his first step is a major attribute and he will be very difficult to guard in his final two years at Yale. The question will be if his supporting cast is strong enough. Coach K is obviously impressed with his capabilities based on the defense that he employed. Apparently, he has quite a bit of prior knowledge as to Makai's abilities. His game reminds of a type of player that keeps scoring on you and you keep shaking your head as to how can he score so much when you look at his physical appearance. Probably, the reason why he was rated a two star recruit. It is probably an impossible task for the rating entities to evaluate mind and heart and that is why many of their evaluations do not ultimately reflect reality. Bottom line is that he is a very good player who would be playing at a large number of upper Division I schools if he was ever given the chance. |

In a way I see his pro potential as being similar to Wes Saunders. Problem is Wes is bigger, stronger, plays better defense and rebounds better. Although a really exceptional player, my expectation is that Mason will be where Wes was, invited to combine, not drafted, but invited to camps and maybe D-League. |

Mason would go in as a PG, which is evaluated in a very different way from a wing like Saunders. While I think he's a long shot, the NBA has plenty of PGs, both starting and backup, who are small and quick. But they usually have to be exceptionally good at something compared to the typical college player, whether that be playmaking, scoring, or defending. A second-unit point guard who can score consistently against normal defenses and create openings for teammates against defenses rotated toward him might have a place. But I would be shocked if that happened right away for Mason--he still has room to improve on a lot of things, despite how good he is now. |

Zach Rosen might be a decent comp in terms of size and position. My impression is that Mason is quicker and a better defender, and probably a little stronger. Rosen was probably better at passing and setting up teammates. |

Mason is not an NBA player IMO. Kid is nasty, but this is crazy. |

Saunders was a great college player but his lack of being able to shoot 3 pointers will probably be his demise as he would have to play the SG position in the pros based on his height. Makai is a more natural fit as a PG than Saunders as a SG but it is highly unlikely that he can play at a pro level but he will be an exceptional Ivy League player. I doubt that Lo and Sears will be able to play in the NBA but they should have good careers overseas. I am not sure if there is anyone currently in the Ivies that will play in the NBA although maybe there may be someone coming into the freshmen class at Harvard. Then again, very few people would have predicted Lin as having a decent NBA career. |

Mason is a better scorer. Disagree. Mason is a great Ivy player but comparing soph years, Rosen was statistically better in just about every category (including scoring categories) except Mason shot the two a little better. |
