Hawks first preseason game is tonight at Memphis. Millsap, Splitter, and Scott are all sitting this one out, so Mike should see a lot of minutes. This will be a great opportunity to show he belongs on the roster.

Mike had 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in 18 minutes in a starting role. Kris Humphries, who is one of Mike's competitors for a spot, had a similar game. Center Walt Tavares, a 7-3 center from Cape Verde who was a 2014 2nd round pick, had a big game, 7-8 from the floor along with 8 rebounds and a block in 15 minutes. Tavares played a little bit for the Hawks last year but spent most of his time in the D-League.

Barring any injuries, Mike may have to beat out either Humphries, Tavares, or Mike Scott for a spot.

Mike has had two good games over the past few days, both as a starter. Last night he had 10 points (4-6 FG), 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal in 24 minutes against the Cavaliers backup squad. And on Saturday, he had 9 points (4-8 FG), 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 23 minutes vs the Spurs' regulars. Mike was matched mostly against LaMarcus Aldridge, which is obviously a very tough matchup.

As for his roster prospects, Scott played a mediocre 11 minutes last night, based on stats, and Humphries was a DNP-Coaches Decision. Tavares had pretty good stats in 12 minutes. And Tiago Splitter has a hamstring injury that will keep him out the first month, meaning that no-one has to be cut until mid-November.

I wonder if Mike is playing for a roster spot or a spot in the rotation? Tavares has an enormous upside and is a true 5. Mike improved ball handling and 3 point skills seem to be positioning him as a genuine 4. Not to imply Mike can't play the 5 but with Howard and Tavares, he isn't going to be getting minutes there.

Also don't forget Splitter at center, once he returns from his injury. He likely will play ahead of Tavares as the first center off the bench - unless Tavares really impresses during his absence. Agree on Mike being more of a four, which leaves him competing with Scott and Humphries for the backup job behind Millsap. That makes seven big men - but it's unlikely they will carry more than six on a roster of 15. That's particularly true given that their first round draft choice, Taurean Prince, is 6-8 and could play the four in certain circumstances.

The Hawks need to trade someone for a draft pick to get the roster down to 15. Splitter or Taveres would have been options until this injury. Now it's more likely Mike, Scott, or Humphries will have to go. There's also an outside chance they could dump Tim Hardaway given he hasn't fared any better in Atlanta than he did in NY. It will be interesting to see how things play out. I would love to see Mike stay in Atlanta, but have to think other teams would be interested if they let him go.

If they give him his flat out release and Mike gets signed somewhere else (almost immediate offers I'm sure) does that mean he'll get paid sooner too? May not be bad for him to change scenario.

I disagree strongly about Tim Hardaway. The Atlanta coaching staff really seems to like him. While it took a while for him to start getting impact minutes and learn their system, by the end of the season and the playoffs he was a significant contributor off of the bench.

I agree it's unlikely they'll get rid of Hardaway. He played well at the end of last season but has done poorly so far this pre-season. That's the main reason for the speculation about trading him to meet the roster limit.

Also of note is that Humphries and Scott both played the same number of minutes as Mike, and both played poorly.

I had a chance to watch the game last night. Mike played great. Very aggressive, great ball movement, although at times a bit over-matched on the boards. Humphries, on the other hand, looks very slow and over-weight. Not sure how the contracts will play into the decision process, but my view is that Mike is the better player with more upside plus he's younger and cheaper than Humphries.

Peachtree Hoops from earlier today:

"Muscala has seen a lot of work so far having logged minutes at power forward during Millsap’s absence and logging time at center in games when Howard has been rested. This volume of minutes could be related to Atlanta’s brass getting a good long look at the only returning player without a guaranteed contract heading into the season, or featuring him for the purpose of driving potential interest in the trade market, or both. He has played very well, going an impressive 13 of 23 on field goal attempts, while also delivering a very impressive assist ratio of 22.0% thus far (would have led all Hawks bigs last season). Maybe most importantly, Muscala has demonstrated excellent chemistry with Howard.

Muscala’s advanced defensive and rebounding metrics trail only the Hawks centers (Howard and Tavares) and Millsap (just one game of action) in the rotation; this combined with his offensive productivity seem to be driving the team toward what would be an extremely tough waiver decision or an increasingly optimistic trade outlook depending upon which way they decide is best to go."

From Peachtree Hoops article titles preseason winners and loser in the winner column

"Mike Muscala

When training camp opened, Mike Muscala looked like he could have been on his way out. However, it became clear at the team’s media day that he was in better shape in terms of his roster spot than it appeared.

Still Muscala backed up his play on the court and looks like he will enter the regular season with his first real chance for consistent playing time. Muscala opened the preseason in the starting lineup in place of Paul Millsap and performed well averaging 7.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 56 percent from the field."

Mike saw action as both the backup PF and the backup center. Humphries only played a few minutes - and none in the second half until the final couple minutes of garbage time. Tavares and Scott didn't play at all.

At first glance I thought he was sporting a Ed Grimly costume for Halloween...boycotting the bun😝

That aside, he's playing really well and glad to see he's part of the rotation. But the NBA itself is hard to watch at times...so many terrible shot choices and often selfish play.

Through two games he is averaging 11.5 pts, 4.5 boards, 2.5 block, 1.5 asst and 1.5 steals. And he enjoyed watching the last 6 minutes of garbage time from the bench.

Got a Bucknell reference on the post game interview.

I walk back my comments about it Atlanta not being a good spot for him. If he keeps getting these minutes, it's more than enough time for him to demonstrate his value.

He looks quicker to me this year but they may be an optical illusion.

One other key stat is that Mike has zero turnovers thus far in 48 minutes. Turnovers were a bit of a problem for him the last two years, so this is a good sign. Also had no turnovers in his final five preseason games.

7 for 8 shooting should lead to more PT.

In today'a NBA, 11.5 point/game probably means about $8-$10 million per year which is just CRAZY!

Ended up with those stats because he got pulled because he couldn't guard Hassan Whiteside. Millsap came in at 6-7 to take on the Miami big who had 25 boards many on the offensive glass where he was dominant. While he had a great offensive night, his defense was not all that spectacular. Best player on the court for Atlanta is probably a stretch.

Mike continues to lead the NBA in FG pct, hitting almost 64% of his shots. He also ranks 44th (of 325) in Player Efficiency Ranking (PER), which measures each player's value statistically. In addition to his great FG shooting, he has a very high assist rate for a big man, and a good rate of offensive rebounding.

Husky, I have been saying this for a while. Mike is going to get a VERY nice bump in salary when his contract expires. I do not know if it will be with Atlanta, but there are many teams that need a mobile, young 4-5.

GO, MIKE!

Nice section in this article on Mike's performance this season w/ some interesting stats. Can't imagine Atlanta will not re-sign him.

Anyone have an idea on the size and term of deal that Mike should expect? I'm thinking 4-5 years at $3-4 per year.

If Mike can sustain his current level of play, I think he will command far more than that, closer to 3 years for $24 million total. I looked at comparable PFs and smaller centers aged 24-29 who signed new contracts in the offseason. They are listed below, along with their contracts and selected stats for the year immediately prior to signing the contract. (Mike's stats are for this year - since this is the year just prior to his new contract.)

Name.../... Contract.../.Height,Age/MPG/PPG/RPG/AP G/PER./Win Shares

Mike Muscala/ . . ? . ? . . /6-11,25/21.4/8.3/3.8/1.7/15.4//3-4 (est)

Miles Plumlee/4 yrs, $52M/6-11,28/14.3/5.1/3.8/0.3/17.4/2.2
Jon Leuer/4 yrs, $42M/6-10,27/18.7/8.5/5.6/1.1/16.2/2.7
Meyers Leonard/4 yrs, $41M/7-0,24/21.9/8.4/5.1/1.5/11.3/2.2
Dwight Powell/4 yrs, $37M/6-11,25/21.3/7.6/4.8/0.9/16.8/3.1
Andrew Nicholson/4 yrs, $26M/6-9,27/14.7/6.7/3.6/0.4/14.8/0.6
Darrell Arthur/3 yrs, $23M/6-9,28/21.7/7.4/4.2/1.4/12.5/2.3
Cole Aldrich/3yrs, $22M/6-11,28/13.3/5.5/0.8/21.3/3.5
Tyler Zeller/2 yrs, $16M/7-0,26/11.8/6.5/3.0/0.5/15.4/1.7
Tarik Black/2 yrs, $12.5/6-9,25/12.9/3.6/4.0/0.4/12.3/0.7

Notes: PER is a metric that tries to incorporate every statistical category into one overall stat. Win shares attempts to measure how many wins each player is responsible for.

- - - -

Looking purely at the stats, Mike is clearly better than Nicholson, Arthur, Zeller, and Black. He is not far behind the others, with rebounding being the only issue. However Mike is a better shooter than any on the list - which should narrow the gap. Defense is an issue compared to some, but not all.

Opinions?

I think if Mike was given consistent minutes and shots he would be a 10 ppg 5 rpg 2 apg guy. But his minutes have not been overly consistent. For the year he may be averaging 21 minutes, but it seems he's more in the 12-16 mpg lately. But he should def be in the range of a neighborhood of $5-8 million per year over 3-4 years. Not a bad living indeed.

Hawks are trading Korver to Cleveland for Mo Williams, Mike Dunleavy and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

Millsap could be on the move too since he's a free agent, so that could mean some more minutes for Mike down the road.

They seem to be heading more in a rebuilding direction now then any serious run at contending.

Speaking of former PL stars, did anyone else catch the Portland vs. Golden State game on late night TV this week? CJ McCollum lit up the Warriors with 26 points (I think) in the first half alone! Finished with 35. He was matched up with Steph Curry. The Blazers are playing without Damian Lillard so CJ has to shoot much more than in prior games.

And speaking of getting paid....

I think that CJ is in the first year of a $90M contract which runs for four years. Someone can check those numbers but it's in the ballpark.

Yes, CJ would look very good in a SIXERS uniform. One can certainly hope for that!

CJ this year is in the final year of his rookie contract that "only" pays him $3.2 million for the year. But he has already signed a new contract that kicks in next year - four years for a total of $106 million. So he will be 30 before he is a free agent.

Mike didn't score in OT, but had some key rebounds. Looked like it might go to a 5th OT, but the Knicks missed two 3 pt attempts on their last possession. Hawks could have put it away more than once but missed FTs.

This was only the 12th 4OT game in NBA history. There has been only one 5OT game.

Not that it wasn't obvious he had beaten out Scott on the depth chart, but Atlanta trade Mike Scott to Phoenix for "cash considerations"

They also acquired Ilyasova as a "stretch four" from Philadelphia, which might negatively impact Mike.

We had a fan bus at the game and it was a neat trip. Courtside for pregame warm ups, Club Box seats, and Mike came up and had a meet and greet, signing autographs. I want to mention how the guy took the time, I am not sure how many players would go the extra step, he is special. Enoch Andoh was with him, works for the 76rers, also Corey Starkey and Hwy wrestler Jos Stolfi made an appearance, Bucknell athletes are young men/women we should be very proud of, we recruit the cream of the crop. Pat Flannery was doing some serious hand shaking on the court prior to the game, he has big basketball footprint.

Hawks blew a 10 point lead in the 4th, but Mike had his best game in a while.

The Hawks’ bench was key to the big run in the third and fourth quarters to get them back into the game. Mike Muscala shot 3-for-3 from deep and finished a team-high +14 in 18 minutes on the floor.

In today's NBA, if he can consistently have similar stats, he can probably sign a $7-9 million per year contract for 3-4 years. (I am guessing at this.)

BTW, a little $$$ back to Bucknell for Muscala Court at Sojka Pavilion would be nice.

Atlanta bench ended up between +14 and +29. Mike was +27. The passing and shot selection were a thing of beauty. They may be bench players, but they're in the NBA for a reason. Cavs didn't take them seriously until it was too late.

Mike was +16 today. Howard and Prince both -2 for the Hawks. Lebron was +2. As mentioned above, Mike hit a 3 with 50 seconds left to draw the Hawks close, and then he assisted on Millsap's shot at the buzzer that sent it to OT. Hawks outscored the Cavs by 44-18 in the final quarter to tie it!

During the final few minutes of OT, he blocked a shot by Kevin Love, got a rebound, assisted on a Millsap basket, and then hit a crucial three with 35 seconds left to give the Hawks a one-point lead that they never relinquished. Mike played the entire OT, and he played 25 minutes in total.

Ended up with 8 points in 18 minutes tonight in an easy win. Shot 4-4, with 1 rebound and 3 assists. Also had a team-leading +26.

Mike had 8 pts in Game 1 vs. Washington. Bit of an off day 2-5 FG, but 4-4 FTs. Had an untimely turnover late with the Hawks down 7.

CJ McCollum has 34 pts through 3Q vs. the Warriors.

They missed a few - especially some nice blocks and his assist to Millsap that won the OT Cleveland game.

Wow, the guy who wrote this makes a very strong argument for the Hawks to resign Muscala. I said it before, but HE WOULD LOOK GREAT IN A SIXERS' UNIFORM!

Mike could do well anywhere. The Hawks will have to pay to keep him.

Silly question. At what point do players stop improving? I'm talking about the relationship between age and declining skills versus getting better and improving their craft. 28? 30? Most guys are out of the League by the time they would "hit their primes".

Husky, that is a good question. You rarely hear of players drastically improving or becoming an All Star after 4-5 years in the Association. So, if 21 is the average age of a rookie, then, 25-26 is probably the age in question. BTW, this is just a guess.

Your guess is a good one. There have been various studies, including two I link below. They generally show an NBA player's peak is at age 25 or 26. Some of course peak later, including a number of superstars.

One factor, other than age itself, is likely wear and tear on the body. NBA players can play as many as 110 games a year, including playoffs, and the constant running and physical style of play - plus the constant travel - has to gradually destroy a player's body. Add in the inevitable injuries, and a player's peak is likely dependent on more than just age. In this regard, Mike can be viewed as a young 25. His minutes have been limited and thus far he has avoided serious injury. He should have more left in the tank than many NBA players. For example, Mike has played about 2800 NBA minutes. CJ McCollum, who was in the same draft class, has played about 7800 minutes. The Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was also in the same draft class, has played almost 10,600 minutes.

Although I can't prove it, I would guess that PF's and Centers, who don't rely on speed and explosive moves, may have more longevity than guards and wings. That might weigh in Mike's favor as well.

Mike's other advantage is having played 4 years in college and only 3 full seasons in the NBA. The one-and-dones who come into the league at 19 would already have 7 seasons of NBA wear and tear by the time they reach 26. I also have read that front court players generally have longer careers (due to fewer injuries) than back court players.

Good point. While it's extremely unlikely that MM will ever reach the level of Millsap, there are similarities in their background. Both are PF's - although MM is a few inches taller. Neither played for a power-conference school. (Millsap is from Louisiana Tech). And Millsap was the 47th player taken in the draft - three spots later than MM.

Millsap played 18-20 mpg off the bench his first two years - averaging 7-8 ppg - before becoming a solid starter his third year. He turned into a star in his 5th season, at age 25, and has been one ever since. He is one of the more consistent players in the game - steadily averaging about 17 ppg and about 8 rpg for each of the last seven years.

Vic, I don't think that this is a new contract. It seems to be a player option for an additional year at $6 million. That being said, I would be surprised if Mike does not get a 3-4 year deal at $6-$8 million per year which absolutely blows my mind.

Name.../... Contract.../.Height,Age /MPG/PPG/RPG/APG/PER./Win Shares

Mike Muscala/ . . ? . ? . . /6-11,25 /21.4/8.3/3.8/1.7/15.4//3-4 (est)

Miles Plumlee/4 yrs, $52M/6-11,28 /14.3/5.1/3.8/0.3/17.4/2.2
Jon Leuer/4 yrs, $42M/6-10,27 /18.7/8.5/5.6/1.1/16.2/2.7
Meyers Leonard/4 yrs, $41M/7-0,24 /21.9/8.4/5.1/1.5/11.3/2.2
Dwight Powell/4 yrs, $37M/6-11,25 /21.3/7.6/4.8/0.9/16.8/3.1
Andrew Nicholson/4 yrs, $26M/6-9,27 /14.7/6.7/3.6/0.4/14.8/0.6
Darrell Arthur/3 yrs, $23M/6-9,28 /21.7/7.4/4.2/1.4/12.5/2.3
Cole Aldrich/ 3yrs, $22M/6-11, 28 /13.3/5.5/4.8/0.8/21.3/3.5
Tyler Zeller/2 yrs, $16M/7-0,26 /11.8/6.5/3.0/0.5/15.4/1.7
Tarik Black/2 yrs, $12.5/6-9,25 /12.9/3.6/4.0/0.4/12.3/0.7

Notes: PER is a metric that tries to incorporate every statistical category into one overall stat. Win shares attempts to measure how many wins each player is responsible for.

- - - -

Looking purely at the stats, Mike is clearly better than Nicholson, Arthur, Zeller, and Black. He is not far behind the others, with rebounding being the only issue. However Mike is a better shooter than any on the list - which should narrow the gap. Defense is an issue compared to some, but not all.

Opinions?

Bringing forward this list of the contracts of Centers/PF's similar to Mike. Some of them are clearly not as good.

Six figure salaries are fairly common in the "real world", but the idea of earning $8,000,000-$10,000,000 per year is just plain insane. (I typed out the numbers so that we can truly appreciate the amount of cash involved.) That being said, personally, I cannot ever fault anybody for earning as much as possible. I hope that Mike maximizes his contract by getting a few different teams who make offers.

It took most of my career to get to a six figure salary. Mike is going to make more in a year than I will make in my entire life. Good for him, but "insane" is an appropriate description.

The insane part, to me, is the relatively low level stats required to earn $6-10 million per season. I wish Mike all the best and hope he capitalizes on his opportunity, but gosh, that kind of money for pedestrian stats and not even being a full time rotation player is crazy. No wonder the average person needs to take a loan out to see an NBA game in person.

Speaking of huge salaries, Bucknellians ranked 1st and 9th on Bloomberg's list of the top ten highest-paid executives for 2016. Marc Lore '93 received about $237 Million for the year and Les Moonves '71 earned about $86.5 Million. Lore will receive similar compensation for the next four years as part of the sale of his Jet.com to Walmart. He is now CEO of Jet.com and also CEO of Walmart.com. (See previous thread.) Moonves recently signed a new contract that should keep his compensation over $75 Million through 2021.

Nice night out for $10! Even though the Phils are terrible yet again. Basketball tickets are typically expensive for the average Joe, or Bill or Dan or Jill. When players averaging 10-12 minutes get $8-10 million, somebody has to pay.

Here is a lengthy podcast from Peachtree Hoops evaluating Mike's season and his value to the Hawks:

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/2017/5/25/15688568/a... (scroll to 7:20 on the audio - runs for 9+ minutes)

They point out that after the All Star break the Hawks were +7.0 with Mike on the floor. According to them, "Mike Muscala enjoyed the best year of his career by a considerable margin." They speculate he might be worth 3 years at $18 Million, which I think is likely a bit low.

Interesting that Atl just traded Dwight Howard and 31st pick to Charlotte for Miles Plumee, Marco Belinelli and 41st pick. Plumlee and Muscala kinda play the same position although Plumlee is prob listed as a Center. His career hasn't produced great results but apparently you don't have to be great to get a great contract.

That trade is a combination of a salary dump and an indictment of Howard's value. If it wasn't already apparent, this confirms they are going to let Millsap go. Maybe some sort of sign and trade.

If Mike re-signs with Atlanta, he will be a starter.

I don't know. I don't see them letting Millsap walk without making a serious offer. The question is whether he will take a little less money to stay in Atlanta or go after a max offer elsewhere.

It became clear late in the season Howard was more of a liability than an asset. Maybe he could have worked to fit into their system better, but given their salary constraints it made sense to trade him.

I don't see it as a big deal. First of all, I think the chance of Millsap returning is low. Also Collins, a 6-10 235 lb low post player, played a lot of center for Wake and will probably play a fair amount of center for Atlanta. And finally, Mike played a lot of center down the stretch for Atlanta after it became apparent that Howard wasn't helping much in close games. If Mike re-signs with Atlanta, I would still expect him to play significant minutes.

Although no-one, even Lehigh fans, expected Kempton to be drafted, it was interesting to see his various metrics from one of the NBA combines. He was a bit shorter than advertised with a way below-average wingspan and a mediocre vertical jump and mediocre agility. If nothing else, he was #1 in the combine in "tallest" shoes - gaining 1.5 inches with shoes on. With shoes off, he is only 6'8.25".

Height with shoes: 6'9.75"
Height without shoes: 6'8.25"
Wingspan: 6'8.5"
Standing reach: 8'8.5"
No step vertical jump: 24"
3/4 court sprint: 3.59 seconds
Lane agility drill: 12.11 seconds (average for centers, way below average for PF's)

For comparison, here are Muscala's marks for the same items:

Height with shoes: 6'11.5"
Height without shoes: 6'10.25"
Wingspan: 7'1"
Standing reach: 9'0"
No step vertical jump: 28" (almost 1.5" above average)
3/4 court sprint: 3.44 seconds (3rd best among centers at the combine)
Lane agility drill: 11.76 seconds (3rd best among centers at the combine)

Btw, the average wingspan for PF's was 7'0" and for centers it was 7'1.5".

Yes, great picture and good of Mike to still use it.

One one not-so-good memory it brings, however, is DP refusing to bring in the subs in the final seconds of that game - even with an insurmountable lead and the clock stopped for a foul. Mike and Bryson were deprived of a deserved standing ovation in their final Sojka game, as were Cam Ayers and Ryan Frazier. Also kept some subs from showing up in the championship box score.

My rationale is that Atlanta will give Mike a decent offer. They've spent time developing him and he knows the system well. In their eyes he may be seen as a value and that seems to be the Hawks focus right now.

I'm very impressed with this GM. It is not his fault it got to the point where Horford and Millsap walked without return, I'm confident he would have gotten something for them at the various trade deadlines. He was able to turn Millsap into Diamond Stone and Houston's first rounder. He dumped th awful Howard contract to add shooting the team needs. It is a rebuild that had to happen. They couldn't afford to pay the 342 million it took to sign the starting five that led them to the 60 win season.

That said I hope he signs Mike at about 3 years 27 million.

I am starting to think that Mike may not get as much as I had previously thought. Last year, the salary cap exploded from $70 million to $94 million. Thus the teams started spending money like the proverbial drunken sailor. However this year the cap hardly moved at all - and thus many teams have no room for free agents other than what they have under arcane things like the mid-level exception. Bird exceptions, bi-annual exception, etc.

In any event, this may lead to less money being available for players who aren't superstars.

It's pretty clear from the trade and free agent news/rumors that Atlanta has no interest in re-signing Mike. Hopefully, he lands with a playoff caliber team somewhere. He will be a valuable asset to someone.

Somewhat telling is the Atlanta Hawks twitter feed for july1, Mike's birthday. There was a nice birthday wish for Kent Bazemore, who shares the same birthday as Mike, and also a bunch of rookie signing news. Mike was not mentioned on that day. Was it an oversight, or have they moved on?

My hunch is 2 years 5.5 million at Dallas. Stay tuned.

Interesting statistical projection of his worth.

At the projected 5 Year $22.8 Million level, the Sixers need to trade Okafor and sign Muscala ASAP. The Sixers should be a fun, young team over the next 5 years with lots of wins in the future.

Looks like Mike may have been a victim of the tightening salary cap. Reportedly just signed with the Hawks for two years for a total of $10 Million. That is far less than similar players got last year.

I think the important detail about this contract for him is that he has a player option to opt out next year. Most likely he'll start for the hawks this year at center, it allows him to prove himself as a starter and try to get a bigger payday next year. But yea at it's face value, 2 year 10 million is pretty disappointing.

Yes, the player opt-out makes it a better deal from his perspective. That feature wasn't in the first tweet about his signing.

It is possible that Mike had a strong preference for Atlanta, since it is the franchise that developed him and because his fiance is from that area.

It's hard to reconcile this with Olinyk's 4 yr, $50M deal with Miami. He may be marginally better than Mike, but not $7.5M/yr better. Hawks got a bargain. Still, $5M isn't chump change either.

Congratulations to Mike. The first year of this deal pays him more than he made the previous four. $5 million is nothing to sneeze at and the most lucrative years of his career are in front of him.

Congratulations Mike!

Some comments from Peachtree Hoops on Mike's deal:

https://www.peachtreehoops.com/2017/7/8/15941044/a...

They call the Muscala deal a "huge steal for the Hawks" - however balanced to some extent by the player opt-out clause which might net him a much larger contract if he has a good year. He apparently has some sort of no-trade provision as well.

Charles Lee is coaching the Hawks summer league team this year. Like the orange tie.

I would be happy to get "only" $5 million per year. Actually, I'll give them a 10% discount to sign me today!!!

Its all gravy after 6 or 7 million anyway. His contract is a work in progress just like his career is. If he does individually well on a lottery focused team he will be rewarded next year. If he does poorly he will push but still have next year to regroup. A calculated risk perhaps geminated at a university on a hill.

Hawks signed Dewayne Dedmon today. He played with the Spurs last season and plays center. He signed a 2 year deal worth 14 million.

Article on the Dedmon acquisition. Sounds like the jury is out on whether he will start ahead of Mike.

Based solely on contracts, it appears the Hawks value Dedmon more than Mike. But hopefully Mike starts and puts up decent numbers so he can sign a bigger deal next year.

Interesting article on Mike free-agency and decision to stay in Atlanta. It will be interesting to see if they give him a more prominent role with so many young players on the team.

The reason for the flurry of articles was his official signing and media event this week. Here is another.

CBS picked each team's most over and under-paid player. No surprise who is the Hawks' most underpaid. Mike needs a new agent.

This "article" reshuffled the 2013 NBA draft based on how players have performed since that time. Mike made it to the first round at #27 while CJ moved up to #3.
