Looked up the numbers for attendance at league games this year vs. last; results are at these links:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Guide: All 2016 numbers on left, 2017 on right. Below each team name is the year, followed by league wins, league losses, final placing (T here indicates a tie); e.g., in 2016, Brown was 3-11 in the league and finished tied for 7th.
Next line: Weekend indicates which of the six weekends of the season the game occurred in; T here indicates a travel partner game. After that follows the actual date of the game, opponent, and attendance figure. I also checked to see whether there was a home hockey game on that same date (except for Columbia and Penn, of course) and indicated with a Y(es) or N(0). At the bottom of each team's numbers, I show the total attendance, average, and median, plus how many games did have a conflict with hockey (next to total). To the right of the 2017 numbers, the changes in the totals from '16 to '17 are shown. Finally, at the very bottom, we have the total, average, and median for the league as a whole, and the same for the second half of the season (i.e., weekends 4-6, plus the second Pa-Pr game in 2016), again with year-to-year changes shown.

Summary of results:
1.) League as a whole was down 132 in average, 286 in median. This was due entirely to the second half of the season (average down 462, median 518.)
2.) Six out of eight teams declined in attendance; only significant increase Penn (409 average, 555 median)

Discuss among yourselves.

How does this jibe with the contention that the tournament w/4 spots would create more interest among the lower rated teams. Certainly seemed to be a lot more discussion with four qualifying spots rather than one. But game attendance down in the late season when every team was still in the running contradicts this.

I don't know if interest = attendance. First of all, except for Princeton and Penn, we are dealing with high school gyms with fewer than 3000 seats. So there is little capacity to increase attendance among Harvard and Yale (which would figure to have lower attendance this year had there been no tournament since they were not in serious contention). We also played more games with the students out both in winter break and spring break. So it's really tough to gauge the isolated effect of the tournament. Clearly, there is more interest in here than there has been in year.

Ivy student attendance is not a good measure of anything.

Ivy students are not spectators. "Watching" doesn't work as a strength in an interview and it isn't even an extracurricular option on the Common App. We alums buy the tix.

Both true. Ivy students have many better things to do with their time. Leave the spectating to us old guys. Confession: I do mine on ILDN and, yes, my spectating is way up in the last few years. (My hook shot is way off )

Is your hook shot the only thing that's off? Some on these Boards have other opinions. I'm just sayin'.
