Is anyone else getting nervous ? I'm hoping there are offers out that haven't been made public, but to date I have seen zero offers made to 2018 recruits. Meanwhile, according to Verbal Commits, penn, Yale and Columbia have each offered to over ten kids, and Harvard, I think 4 or 5.

Also, after getting early commitments from Bell, and Stephens ( think there might have been others), I was hoping for another early, really good, get. Not so this year.

Has anyone heard anything promising ?

I hope you're right. These days, with Twitter, FB, basketball blogs, et al, I would be surprised if an offer from a D1 team were kept secret.

In any event, can't believe I'm worrying over it. 2017 newcomers look very good.

Our forward-looking program is going to use robotic players trained with Big Data in the future, saving lots of time and trouble in recruiting while providing ready-made jokes for all the haters of The System.

He's pretty small and was a defensive specialist, not a combination that usually translates well at the D1 level absent blinding quickness. Not clear from the articles that he was a recruited athlete; if not, that makes him a heck of an impressive student with a great "oh, by the way my main extracurricular was being the starting PG on a championship team" part of his admissions profile.

Article suggests, but does not say, that he was recruited. It would be a noticeable outlier to recruit a player who is not rated, however, much less rated under 2 stars. I'm dubious.

If I remember correctly, there were dozens of all-conference and even all-state players in intramural basketball.

Great pickup for Princeton with 4 Star point guard Jaelin Llewellyn. He was being recruited by many high majors, including Florida, Purdue, Virginia, and Stanford

An insanely good pick up. I like him better than Spencer Freedman, though both are incredible point guards in their own way.

This is not business as usual for this league. Even the recent business as usual. This is crazy.

Isn't this an early-season get since Llewellyn is Princeton's first 2018 recruit?

In any case, kudos to the coaching staff! The PG spot will be wide-open after Amir Bell graduates so he will have an immediate opportunity to make an impact.

He may be the Tigers' highest-rated commit, although I can't remember how many stars were bestowed upon Ian Hummer. Bill Bradley and Brian Taylor would have been in the same strata back in the day, but that preceded the advent of the recruit-industrial complex.

Llewellyn is a better recruit (not predicting a better outcome, just that the starting point is better) than Hummer was coming in. Hummer had excelled in a really tough basketball conference in high school, no doubt, but he was an undersized 4 who couldn't shoot it.

Jaelin has the right size and athleticism for his spot and could have played PG at any level on both ends of the floor. Who knows how things will turn out, but he's definitely a higher profile prospect coming in than Hummer.

Bill Bradley Recruiting from Ivy@50:

But the greatest basketball player ever to play in the Ivy League almost didn't end up there. One of the most celebrated players in Missouri high school basketball history, Bradley received more than 70 scholarship offers before originally deciding on Duke. Soon after, he suffered a broken foot playing baseball, an injury that caused the high school senior to contemplate a life without the game that had come to consume his life.

"I thought to myself, 'Well, where would I go if I didn't play basketball?'"

"The Princeton freshman class was supposed to convene on a Monday and the Duke freshman class on a Wednesday," remembers Bradley. "On the previous Friday I came home from a date and I woke my parents up and told them I had changed my mind."

Brendan Adams is a 6'4" point guard from Hanover (MD) who attends Calvert Hall High School in Towson. He plays for Team Melo in the EYBL.

Verbal Commits lists him as a two-star, but Georgetown and Minnesota sites have him listed as a three-star recruit.

Back in 5/2017, Rivals had him listed as at Top-150 point guard - https://stanford.rivals.com/news/top-150-point-gu a...

Adams has narrow down his list to 9 teams - Princeton, Minnesota, Rhode Island, St. Joe's, UMass, Georgia Tech, Georgia, George Mason, and Wyoming.

https://twitter.com/BAuno0/status/8924652 737475051...

He removed Columbia, Kansas State, Stanford, Siena, St. Bonaventure (where his brother plays), George Washington, Towson, and Hofstra from his list.

Not necessarily. MH has a style of putting the most versatile players on the court. If he has two athletes as talented as these two, neither will languish on the bench.

Apparently used to playing for fans wearing orange, based on his video, so that's a plus. Not one trey attempt even depicted, perhaps a concern, and only one assist shown. A lot of MH-disapproved pull-up mid-range shots going in. But the whole thing looked to be from a single game, so even more than usual shouldn't be taken too seriously. Plus finishing with the left hand does translate, regardless of opposition.

I read an on-line article in the local Newton paper in which his coach refers to him as a good rebounder and his best defender. So he appears to have a good all round game in addition to his scoring ability.
I was unable to attach it to this post for some reason, but it was dated last January.

If Llewellyn lives up to his billing, I expect that other PGs will have to be able to move to other positions in order to get significant PT. I liked MH's balanced approach last year after Brase and Caruso were lost to injury. If there are enough talented players who can shoot, pass, rebound and play defense. I can see us continuing last year's style of play. We had plenty of options and no opponent could afford to double team any of our players.

T69 - I agree with your point about PG playing time given Llewellyn's commitment. Wright appears to have a diverse range of skills and in Princeton's offense the parts tend to be more interchangeable so the coaching staff can get the most out of a player like him.

Over the weekend Llewellyn torched USA Blue 2018 for 43 points in an Adidas tournament in Houston.

Cannady will be a senior in 2018-19 which is a plus as it will give Henderson some time to figure how to best utilize the two freshmen. The talent at guard is thin after this year unless Morales or Reynoso-Avila develop which is a question mark.

I can't guarantee that Desrosiers, Much and Schweiger will make you forget about Cook, Caruso and Weisz but they are all good enough to be quality rotation players from the start at the very least. Add to that Bell, Stephens and Cannady and I don't think that either of last year's backcourt frosh developing is an imperative.

Interesting. This player was originally listed as a Penn target a few months ago after his HS teammate committed to UP, before he started getting significant major conference interest.

Given the history, I would say this is a long shot but Mitch (with Kerry Kittles' assistance? I wonder) is doing good things.

I'm trying to keep from getting carried away. But, given that the most recent news was his tweet listing Princeton as one of his finalists and that he has not yet made an official visit, it would appear that we are very much in the running. Perhaps SATs are still an open issue. But, Sidwell Friends is a pretty good school for preparing students for college.

MH seems to be leaning toward quicker, shorter lineups with multiple 3 Point shooters. Pete Miller, if I remember correctly, was not starting at the end of last season although he gave us significant minutes in the post and on defense. I believe that Will Gladson (255 lbs!) will be giving us different contributions this year. We will still be able to call on Richard Arizguroh(?) who appears to be a high-energy, rapidly developing center. I like our squads of multi-talented players who can share the load and shift assignments at short notice. We should be seeing an increased focus on defense this season as younger players emerge. It may take us awhile to recover from graduation losses. But, by late season we should be firing on all cylinders and next year could be another special one.🐅

With regards to Saddiq Bey, his timeline at 247Sports notes that he has made his 5 official visits at Pitt (9/1), Xavier (9/15), Northwestern (9/22), Miami (9/29) and NC State (10/6).

https://247sports.com/Player/Saddiq-Bey-460 41574/T...

Earlier today, Rivals noted that Bey has only made four official visits - Pitt, Xavier, Miami and NC State.

Corey Evans at Rivals thought Miami was the leading school, but the recent FBI investigation may have given Bey some pause. Evans feels that he could take an official trip to Princeton in the next few weeks.

https://basketballrecruit ing.rivals.com/news/twitt...

FWIW - On 9/21, just prior to Bey's scheduled official visit to Northwestern, the Wildcats received a commitment from Miller Kopp, another four-star wing recruit. Could this decision have lessened Northwestern's interest and caused Bey to drop the official visit Northwestern?

A big question is which group is correct regarding Bey's official visits?

Princeton put a fair deal of effort behind Mason Forbes but lost out to Harvard. Then again, Princeton beat out Harvard for Jaelin earlier this year, so those two have been locking horns a lot.

Still some talent left out there, but this isn't a very deep class. Wouldn't be surprised if Princeton took one more, but wouldn't blame it for not chasing and just calling it a day with the three it has (a big-time feature combo guard and two nice complementary pieces).

Don't know... wouldn't be surprised if they're done. Don't think they have any more gaps they have to fill, and there isn't really much left on the board. Last piece was to get a 4. They had Mason Forbes on their radar and Colby, when Mason went to Harvard, it seemed pretty clear Colby would be heading to Princeton.

Looks like the 2018 classes will line up:
1) Harvard
2) Princeton
(gap)
3) Yale

From there, fourth could really end up being any team, but Brown, Dartmouth and Columbia are the most likely with Brown being the clubhouse leader.

Just to get out another (admittedly less informed) view, I think Princeton has the best class right now (and for the 2nd year in a row).

I also think Columbia and Dartmouth have better individual players than Brown, though Brown has more recruits. I think I'd put Columbia ahead of Brown for 4th.

And finally, addressing what Mike did not -- I think my Quakers are really taking it to Cornell for 7th place in the rankings. Not sure if Penn brings anyone else in, but Wang seems comparable to Ellis and so just another body could move Penn into the conversation for 4th best class.

The class coming in this year is deep -- to give another perspective on that one (that I know differs from Mike's), I'd rank the freshmen classes:

Princeton
Yale
Penn
Harvard
Columbia
Brown
Dartmouth
Cornell

I would imagine MH and staff are done with recruiting for the 2018 class with 3 seemingly solid gets and the great get in Llewellyn. Still a little guard/wing heavy, but perhaps MH believes in Gladson and Arirguzoh enough to not need to get a center in 2018.

As I noted on the Penn board earlier today, Saddiq Bey (listed as 6'6" 4-star shooting guard at Verbal Commits) has asked for and been given his release by N.C. State last night.

Penn had given him an offer and his Sidwell Friends classmate Jelani Williams just finished his first year for the Quakers.

Princeton was in Bey's final six schools before choosing N.C. State. The other four were Miami, Xavier, Pitt and Northwestern.

- Kyle got his first opportunity to show he can hang with best when he helped the Slam beat a team that featured Nowell, an All-Pac-12 Freshman Team selection this past season at the University of Washington, a performance that included drawing a foul and scoring over the Huskies’ star on a baseline drive.

“It was cool, but I’ve also always known that I’m capable of playing at that level,” said Kyle, who added that not having the Pac-12 label doesn’t mean he can’t go head-to-head with guys that do.

That can-do mentality and confidence is something Slam player-coach Tyler Amaya highlighted.

“I love his attitude,” Amaya said. “He comes ready to play, comes ready to compete, he doesn’t back down from anybody, he’s got a really nice shot and he’s shown the ability to get to the hoop and finish on some pretty bigger, athletic guys. -

Here's another Heraldnet article on Kyle from this past November:

https://www.heraldnet.com/sports/monroes-kyle-a -co...

- Kyle possesses rare athleticism and agility for his size, which he credits to his soccer background.

“I think it’s helped my footwork, being able to move quicker laterally and forward and backward,” he said. “And I think it’s mentally helped my vision — seeing the floor.”

One of Kyle’s greatest strengths is shot-blocking, an area he’s excelled in ever since stepping onto the hardwood. The Monroe senior standout is a feared rim protector whose towering length and quickness often lead to multiple emphatic swats per game.

“Most players that block shots come over and rotate from help side — they’re not actually guarding the player that they block the shot of,” first-year Monroe coach Ben Williams said. “He’s so quick that he can block the shot of the guy he’s guarding. … He has long arms and his timing is just really good.”

During the early portion of his basketball career, Kyle played primarily as a post on offense. But in recent years, he’s trained with former Mariner coach Dexter Griffen to develop a perimeter game that complements his interior prowess. Most notably, Kyle has extended his shooting range and improved his ability to attack off the dribble. -

- “Not only is he strong, but he has a very quick first step,” Grinaker said. “So I think the challenge is (that defenses) will put somebody with a little bit more size on him to try to stop him from backing down. And that’s when he faces up and is able to take advantage of his quickness.

“And when they try to put somebody (on him) that’s a little bit quicker, then he relies on his strength to kind of bully the defender a little bit. So I think he’s learned to size up his defender and figure out what he should go to in order to take advantage of the matchup.”

Williams said Monroe plans to fully utilize Kyle’s versatility.

“He can jump-hook and drop-step and do all of the Kevin McHale moves down by the basket,” Williams said. “But he can put the ball on the floor from the perimeter, too. And he can attack from the high post and the short corner, and be the guy who’s initiating the plays (with) his passing.” -

I like Kyle's size in that clip. Looks pretty strong and agile.

Kellman is a Class of 2019 recruit. He'll be joining the team next year.

Yeah, I was aware of that. Too lazy to look for the correct thread.

I hope this is the correct place to post this....

In the absence of any other news, I looked at the roster which has just been posted. Various changes in height are noted.

Of particular interest, Colby Kyle now listed at 6-9 (as is Noah Bramlage), and Elijah Barnes is now listed at 6-8.

Kyle has great hops, which is even better at 6-9, and to my eye Barnes is as athletically gifted as anyone on the roster. Now that Barnes is not starting the season injured (I hope), perhaps he is our next emerging star.

I feel like our board is generally more skeptical of recruits and less skeptical of improvement from returning players than some of the others. A get like Llewelyn would be hyped as portending favorite status in some precincts, while the upside of even guys like Much would be played down. Anything the team can get out of Barnes or Kyle would be very helpful.

I enjoy the guys who blossom with no prior fanfare, from Maddox to Caruso to Stephens. I hope Barnes is the next in line.

Good question as to who may take a significant upward step. Strikes me as four potential candidates based on athletic and skill sets -- Arirguzoh, Barnes, DesRosiers and Much (alphabetical order). Unlikely but possible -- Gladson, Morales, Reynoso-Avila and Schwieger. Is there a Maddux in this group of eight?

Arirguzoh and Barnes are intriguing just simply based on their athleticism but probably less likely than DesRosiers and Much that may not have quite as much upside but they are basketball players.

Tigers will need one possibly two to really emerge this year and be major contributors. Final question may be how good/great Llewellyn may be. Time will tell.

I was also intrigued by Gladson's short stints last season, obviously limited by his injury and MH's desire to go small so much. Outside shooting wasn't great but he looked like a different guy in terms of passing, setting screens, and overall confidence. Seemed like the game had slowed down for him.

Over at IHO they have a Princeton preview. Apparently two of the incoming frosh were strong defenders in high school, one a PG who always guarded the toughest assignment and the other a 6'9" shot blocker. Given the defensive problems last year, I hope that their offensive games are good enough that they can get on the floor for a few minutes per contest.

It is always good to have a big body like Gladson. It will be interesting as to how many minutes Arirguzoh and Gladson receive. Gladson's value would significantly increase if he can hit some 3 pt shots which he has not done to date. He also has some limitations defensively but let's hope that he is healthy and worked on his quickness. I would not be surprised if Arirguzoh gets the majority of minutes because of his defense.
