Here is an early look at this PL season, starting with a review of where teams finished last year, followed by what they have returning in terms of minutes, points, rebounds, etc.

Here are players lost to transfer since last season began:

AMERICAN
• Delante Jones 6-5 soph SF – to Seattle; was PL ROY in 2015-16; was worse as soph.
• Lonnie Rivera 6-6 soph PF – transferred to Wagner; started a number of PL games after Tolksdorf was hurt.
• Alex Paquin 6-0 jr CG – to McGill (Canada) as grad transfer.
• Andrija Matic 6-10 soph Center – going to Europe ; was a regular in rotation as a freshman, rarely played as soph.

ARMY
• None known at this point. But with 10 freshmen and 10 sophomores on the 2016-17 roster, some churn is inevitable.

BOSTON
• None known.

COLGATE
• Dave Krmpotich 6-7 soph PF – left team during season last year but appears to still be a Colgate student.

HOLY CROSS
• Tyrone Cohen 6-5 freshman wing - to Hutchison Community College; was expelled from HC after 1st semester.

LAFAYETTE
• Monty Boykins 6-5 senior wing - to Pitt for a redshirt senior year. Already graduated from LC but missed senior year due to shoulder injury.
• Dom Cristiano 6-8 PF/C (recruited walk-on) - to NYU.

LEHIGH
• Brandon Alston 6-5 junior wing - transferred to Georgia Tech with two years of eligibility left. Alston was LU’s 6th man for much of the season and then became a key starter for final ten games. Played 33 minutes in championship game.
• Matt Holba 6-7 redshirt soph SF/PF - to Indiana Fort Wayne. Was a starter until mid-January, and averaged about 20 mpg.

LOYOLA
• Dylan Gollihar 7-0 frosh center - to Lees-McRae. Gollihar was a project and missed the entire season due to injury.
• Austin Harriott 6-4 frosh wing - to Bloomsburg. Rarely played as a freshman.

NAVY
• James Butler 6-8 frosh PF - to Drexel. Butler left the Navy team when PL play started.

First of all, thank you Bison137 for compiling and posting this. Its enriching to read and passes the summer faster too. Decidedly good news for Bucknell as their 15-3 team is returning a lot of the stuff that made them winners last year, but Lafayette may be groaning from the abundance of returning production of their 5-13 team! And other teams could be getting great talent in and Army is always a wildcard team. Thats how I see it. Bucknell is in the catbird seat. My question is even with a wider gap between the Bison and the others than last year, can they improve on 15-3 and 26-9? On paper and on court they are a great team, but how good? Nana could be downing the mac and cheese and getting distracted by video games and girls, Bruce Moore could be a book-reading nerd we just don't know. But how are they going to improve on the impressive W column from last year?

Thanks for all the great info 137. It's way too early to speculate on final league standings - so I won't other than to say the Bison should dominate, barring major injuries.

Paulie, don't worry about Nana. He's been in the gym working on his game. It's scary to think how good he might be this season.

More info. Here are all the players being added to rosters. I have included transfers who sat out last year and are now eligible to play, plus a couple of players who missed the entire year to injury. (Also listed in italics are the Army/Navy players who appear to be heading for a redshirt year at their prep schools, although it is sometimes hard to tell.)

Also every reported offer for each recruit is shown, taken largely from Verbal Commits but also from their twitter accounts. For some additional perspective, I have listed each player's commitment date. That is relevant because players who committed early likely would have received more and possibly better offers. Those who committed before July 1st (prior to Summer AAU) might be considered very early and probably would have received more/higher offers. Those who committed by the end of August are somewhat early and might well have improved the offer list. Those who committed later in the Fall and in the Spring often were not going to upgrade the offer list.

As a guess, I would say the team with the top quality freshmen is Boston U, followed by Bucknell and Lehigh. Tops in terms of quantity of legitimate prospects are Lehigh, Holy Cross, and American.

Not sure if you missed it or didn't list him because he verbally committed after the BU roster came out but Boston University has one more recent commitment, though not as highly touted for the 2017 class in Andrew Petcash.

Petcash, Andrew 6-4 CG (PA) - St. Francis (PA), Army, Navy; committed 8/28/17

Definitely didn't miss him - since I was the one who posted his commitment on your board. Just forgot to add him, as my spreadsheet was completed a week ago (although only posted today).

Any news on which Boston U scholarship player has left - or if that account in the Petcash article was incorrect?

137, that list must have taken hours and possibly days to compile. Thank you!

Just based on the number and quality of offers per player, there appears to be a big difference between BU/Bucknell/Lehigh and the rest of the PL.

With Bucknell not being an active player in the transfer/JUCO game, It is interesting to see where some players come from. Something tells me that there might be some stories behind these players.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

The belief on the BU board was the player is Blaise Mbargorba who was granted an extra year of eligibility due to his injury at SMU apparently. He had been hanging out with the Coach Jones and some other team members this summer in photos. This also makes sense as to why BU hadn't recruited a 13th player for a scholarship until late this summer.

How might this change in transfer status affect Bucknell? I think it is more fair for players but not sure how GPA angle will work given all of the suspected and known Tom-foolery with athletes courses and grades. And can coaches hold players "hostage" as some have done in the past?

I can't see the NCAA allowing all transfers to be immediately eligible to play. That would be CRAZY!

I won't be surprised if it happens - and I won't be at all surprised if it is CRAZY. On the one side, it might help a couple of the PL teams that are OK with bringing in transfers - Lehigh, American, Colgate, and maybe Boston U. But on the other hand, Lehigh and American have also had multiple players transfer out. That's good for a program if it's the underperformers who depart - but not good if it is rotation players.

Excellent points by all. I think they leave it as it is but not allow coaches to hold players hostage if they wish to transfer and sit out a year.

Apparently, somebody is making a movie about HC's 1954 championship team called Purple Reign. The HC board is talking about it. Personally, I think that the trailer is very interesting. BTW, I never knew that HC is the smallest school to ever win a hoops championship.

Just to clarify, holy cross won the NCAA championship in 1947. That was an eight team tournament, all played at MSG. Their 1954 title was in the NIT.

Hopefully the movie will point out that it took a Bucknell graduate (Doggie Julian) coaching them for them to win the 1947 title.

The belief on the BU board was the player is Blaise Mbargorba who was granted an extra year of eligibility due to his injury at SMU apparently. He had been hanging out with the Coach Jones and some other team members this summer in photos. This also makes sense as to why BU hadn't recruited a 13th player for a scholarship until late this summer.

Following up on this, the player who left was not Mbargorba - which seemed a bit implausible. It was their starting PG, junior Kyle Foreman, who will remain in school but no longer play hoops. That means their starting PG will presumably be senior Eric Johnson, who has been the backup the last two years, averaging 15-20 mpg. Not as good as Foreman but not a big drop-off. The backup will either have to be frosh Javante McCoy, a 6-5 CG who may not be ready for that role, or else starting wing Cedric Hankerson, who is a 5th year senior. He has played that role occasionally in the past, but it would likely hamper his scoring.

Laffayette gets a commitment from Sean Good who is rated as high as 3.5 stars. I am not sure of the accuracy of that however. He appears to have been recruited at a higher level early on but still a good recruit for the Leopards. 137 any more info ?

He likely is a solid PL recruit, but I don't think there is much chance of him being another Mike Muscala or Nana Foulland. I doubt he will end up as good as Jared Mintz, although only time will tell.

He got an offer from Penn State at the start of his sophomore year - likely based on him already being 6-10 - and then added ones from Rice, Davidson, Penn, Boston U, and Colgate in the spring of his soph year. Then no reported offers for 15 months - except from Columbia - as his game appeared to plateau and he apparently stopped growing. I think PSU and Davidson pulled their offers at some point, but I can't confirm that. Given his school's proximity to Lewisburg, I am sure Bucknell scouted him - but he did not have a Bison offer. His final four were Colgate, Lafayette, Columbia, and Rice.

Good plays for a relatively small Catholic school (Trinity) in Camp Hill. Their competition is reasonably good, but far from great. Good last year - as a 6-10 junior - only averaged 8.6 ppg, but he did get 10.1 rpg and 4.4 bpg. (For comparison, as a freshman two years earlier he averaged 7.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg, and 5.1 bpg.) Not surprisingly, he had a big height advantage over most of his competitors, but is very thin (maybe 205 pounds). He was surrounded by two all-state players, which likely affected the number of shots he took but also meant he got easier shots than if he were the main offensive weapon. In AAU ball, he played for a strong team (Team Final) that had two superstars (ended up at Duke and Oregon) and a number of solid mid-major players. Good averaged about 10 mpg for that team, based on their website box scores.

As for his 3.5 stars, which is a Verbal Commits average of 4 stars from ESPN and 3 stars from Rivals, you have to remember that those sites see very few of the players who aren't superstars. Good suddenly went from unranked to 4 stars from ESPN when he picked up the PSU offer at the start of his sophomore year. Likely the same with Rivals.

Monmouth ended up winning 80-72 at Lehigh. Monmouth had 27 turnovers vs 9 for LU, but they outrebounded LU 53-24.

In other games, LC had a bad loss to a weak NJIT team, Loyola lost at Fairfield, and Army blew out the always tough John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Army used 20 players in that game.

Lehigh ended up beating Siena 91-90 in OT. Siena was victimized by a fast clock at the end. Siena got the ball back with 3.34 seconds left, but buzzer went off within 3.1 seconds, before they could get a shot off. Looks like the clock may have started - incorrectly - when a missed FT hit the rim.

Holy Cross stayed close to a good Albany team for much of the game but got blitzed down the stretch. Albany on fire from three. Final 78-62.

Colgate leads Columbia at home. They have been playing very well. And Lehigh is down by nine points at a weak Pitt team. I thought they had a reasonable shot to win that one.

Loyola has lost two close road games that they would have won if healthy. They are missing All-PL PG Andre Walker, who went down with some sort of injury two games ago, and also missing Chancellor Barnard, who is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Here is how the OOC games have gone for the league, as compiled by SOV on the HC site:

The PL is currently 24-33 against non-conference opponents, and ranked #21 as a conference by Ken Pomeroy.

Tuesday's game:

Loyola 63, Dartmouth 64

American (2-3): L Kansas State, L West Virginia, L Wagner, W New Hampshire, W VMI

Army (3-2): L Hofstra, W John Jay, W Marist, W Columbia, L Niagara

Holy Cross (2-3): W Sacred Heart, W Harvard, L Rhode Island, L Fairleigh Dickinson, L Albany

Lafayette (0-5): L George Mason, L NJIT, L Villanova, L Princeton, L St. Peter's

Lehigh (3-3): W Marist, L Monmouth, W Siena, W Eastern, L USC, L Pittsburgh

Loyola (1-5): L Northwestern, L Fairfield, L Towson, W Goucher, L UMass Lowell, L Dartmouth

Navy (5-3): W Pittsburgh, L Miami (FL), L Pennsylvania, W Bryant, W Washington College, W St. Francis NY, L FGCU, W Denver

I would be interested in trying that for some away games if there is enough interest.

Meanwhile, there were three PL games today:

1. HC was blown out by Manhattan in Northern Ireland.

2. Army, who was a slight favorite, beat UMBC at home by 11 points. Tommy Funk, Andrew's brother, led Army in scoring.

3. Navy, who was a slight favorite, beat Delaware at home by 6 points. Bryce Dulin had a career-high 30 points for the Mids, and Shawn Anderson had 20.

Pomeroy's current projections of wins for the PL season:

Bucknell 14.1
Army 11.2
Colgate 10.3
Navy 10.0
Lehigh 9.9
Boston U 8.1
Loyola MD 6.9
Lafayette 6.6
American 6.5
Holy Cross 6.5

I would expect Army and maybe LC to end up with fewer wins. Also I expect Boston U, maybe American (assuming good health), and maybe HC to get more. As for Loyola, if they get healthy, I'd vote for more wins. But if Walker is out for the year, I'd expect less than 6.9.

Some might be surprised at the thought of American winning 7 or more games - especially given their current 2-5 record - but I think that record may be misleading, with several factors possibly making them better than was expected. First, their very good sophomore center Mark Gasperini has yet to play due to a concussion. Secondly, their transfer SF Larry Motuzis is averaging 17.9 ppg with a very good FG pct. Also their FOY candidate, SF Sam Iorio, has missed recent games due to illness. And juco transfer Cheikh Diallo has been giving them good minutes - perhaps more than was expected.

On that play, Marist was inbounding with 0.6 seconds left. They threw a pass out just beyond halfcourt that was intercepted by Colgate guard Sean O'Brien. He put up a shot that hit nothing but net. But it's hard, in less than 0.6 seconds, to catch a pass coming at you from under the basket and then build up enough momentum to reach that basket from almost 50 feet away. The refs reviewed the video and decided the shot was released after the buzzer.

Btw, Andre Walker has returned from injury, so Loyola may be stronger than their record suggests. They are still missing Andrew Kostecka - not sure of his injury - and they lost Chancellor Barnard for the year.

I imagine it's Chris Simpson in 1993-94. He averaged 20.5 ppg for the entire season on a very high-scoring team. That team, for example, had six games with 98+ points. If it wasn't Simpson, then the next possible candidate would be Patrick King, who averaged over 20 ppg his senior year. Muscala, btw, didn't come close to a 20 ppg average in OOC play.

Here's one item of trivia: The last PL player to average 22 or more ppg for a full season was Brett Eppenheimer (Lehigh) in 1997-98. It was never done by McCollum, Muscala, Kempton, Sprink, etc. I doubt Zach can sustain that pace either - especially if they get some blow-out PL games where he plays limited minutes.

Lehigh's 6-7 PF Ed Porter is reportedly academically ineligible for the upcoming semester. That effectively leaves LU with only eight players - unless one of their two injured centers miraculously becomes a contributor. Worse, they now only have one interior player - freshman center James Karnik, who has been quite good so far.

Porter was a juco transfer, and it appears Lehigh was afraid they would take some flak for bringing in a recruit from a junior college. When he signed, their press release noted his HS GPA and his Juco GPA - both of which mean nothing without a lot of context. "Porter is a junior college transfer, who just graduated from Florida Southwestern State College. Strong in the classroom, Porter posted a 3.8 GPA this past year and was a strong student coming out of high school (4.1 GPA)."

I assume you're being a bit facetious since the crowd is likely to be near zero no matter when the game starts and whether it is up against the football championship game or a local curling match. One possible explanation is that Navy starts classes the next morning and they wanted to get back at a halfway reasonable hour. It is a 6-hour bus ride - assuming they don't have some way to take a flight home. Army and Navy, btw, start second semester classes significantly earlier than the eight other PL schools.

Also, they are calling for an ice storm that will leave a coating ice on roads in NJ starting sometime this afternoon. The Midshipmen probably want to leave ASAP.

BTW, if they never played this game, would anybody know?

Lafayette led Army 45-26 early in the second half - at West Point. From that point on, they were outscored 55-26, losing by ten. The difference in the game was turnovers: Lafayette had 18, Army had 6.

Games tonight:

American 69 Boston U 58 @ Boston
Holy Cross 70 Army 66 @ HC
Navy 75 Lafayette 72 @LC
Colgate 76 Lehigh 72

- Colgate led LU 50-22 late in the first half; outscored 50-26 the rest of the way, but held on.

- Sam Iorio, AU's talented freshman forward, had 26 points. Boston had a 34-25 rebounding edge, but AU countered by having 12 turnovers to 21 for Boston.

One bit of churn. Navy was tied for 3rd with Colgate and Army. Not only did they lose to Boston, but they did it at home. Unless Boston loses to LC on Wednesday while the Bison win at Navy, the Bison game next Saturday at Boston will be very big, possibly for tournament home court advantage.

I am also. Navy has underachieved somewhat in league play, but they have a very experienced team that was generally picked for 2nd or 3rd in various rankings. Note that I was wrong in my post above, however. They actually were one game out of 3rd entering today.

Hopefully the government shut-down won't affect Navy's athletic program, as it has that of Air Force, who cancelled multiple games today. I would hate to have to make up a cancelled Navy game by cramming it into the schedule later in the year.

I take back my correction. I was right the first time about Navy's spot in the standings. The PL website is wrong, claiming incorrectly that Navy has five league losses. They will probably figure it out eventually.

Lacey sprained his ankle near the end of their last OOC game December 21st. He then missed their first league game but returned, albeit for limited minutes, the next game. However, he is averaging 33 mpg the last two weeks, so I doubt he is much less than 100%, although it may still be bothering him somewhat. Of course at this time of the year, a lot of players are performing with nagging injuries.

There were some interesting games tonight:

1. Loyola beat Lehigh in two OT's after trailing by 11 points with 4:30 left. There's always a chance when Brett Reed is coaching. Actual crowd in Bethlehem appeared to be on the low side of 300.

2. Lafayette lost to Boston by 3 points, as Petrie missed a three at the buzzer. The scoring patterns were interesting:

- LC broke out to a 26-10 lead through the first 12 minutes.
- Boston finished the half on a 20-8 run.
- LC extended the lead to 8 points early in the secon half, but then were outscored 37-14 to fall behind 71-56 with exactly 1:00 left.
- LC then outscored Boston 16-4 over the last minute to draw within 3 points, but couldn't hit a shot at the end to tie it.

3. Colgate upset Army on the road 81-78. Stats were even with the exception of CU having a 12-rebound advantage. Going into the game, the two teams were very even in that category - so that shouldn't happen. Colgate, who is 6-3 in PL play, is now in 3rd place one game ahead of Army.

137 - Disregard I read the ESPN game thread. The most amazing part of the answer to my question is that BU made 4-7 FT’s in the last 1:00...meaning LU scored 17 points in 1:00. Wouldn’t want to play LC in 3 years

Lehigh lost again at home, this time to Navy 77-75. Lehigh had a 3 point lead with a minute to play, but gave up two layups to Shawn Anderson and couldn't hit a shot. They made a couple of comebacks after Navy went up 9 two separate times, but couldn't close. They're now tied with Lafayette for 8th, one game out of the cellar.

They have to travel to Holy Cross for a game on Monday. HC beat Lafayette handily today.

Also, Kenpom.com, which is a much better indication of how good the team is, has the Bison at #104. I have always considered being in the Top 100 to be where a quality mid major should try to be.

In the “way too early” brackets, ESPN has Bucknell a 14 in the East playing Ohio State in Wichita. Others have the Bison either a 14 or 15. First, I just want Bucknell to make the Dance, but a 14 seems right...and a small chance for 13.

In front of a sparse Hart Center crowd tonight, Lehigh beat HC 71-67, although they tried their best to maintain tradition by blowing the lead. LU led by 15 points with 5 minutes left. Then after a few minutes of LU incompetence, HC had an open shot from behind the arc to take the lead with under 20 seconds left. Then with a 4-point lead and 6.5 seconds left, LU inexplicably fouled Grandison shooting a three! Does Brett Reed coach stupid basketball or is there something in the Bethlehem water?

Jehyve Floyd continued his run of dominant play, shooting 7-7 with 9 boards and 6 blocks. I think he may have played his way as high as 2nd team All-PL, with an outside shot to move higher if he continues this level of play. I believe he has now hit 16 consecutive shots, at least half of them dunks.

That was a great comeback. Kaspar had a great second half, once he was allowed to play.

Last year, you may recall, the Bison had a similar run vs Lehigh in Sojka but couldn't finish. They trailed by 18 points in the second half, then fought back to tie it about four or five times. Had a 26-8 run in the middle of the second half but lost it over the final few minutes.

Lehigh beats Boston at home 80-75. In usual Lehigh fashion they tried to give the game away late. With a 3 point lead, 10 seconds left, and the ball, Boston stole the inbounds pass and found Scanlon wide open for 3. The ball went halfway in and popped out and Lehigh got the rebound.

Lehigh beat BU (Boston University) 80-75 in Bethlehem. Mountain Hawks let a 9-point halftime lead turn into a deficit of, I think, 8 points but rallied to polish them off. Career-high 23 for Lehigh's Caleb Bennett.

It is really feeling like after Bucknell there is little difference between 2nd and 10th place. I think Bucknell could just as easily lose in the quarterfinals as in the finals if they have a bad game and/or catch a hot shooting opponent.

I think Boston is clearly the next best team if they get Hankerson back. Army and Lafayette are dangerous because of their 3 point shooting. Our strength in PL play has been defense. That will keep us in any game. Remember, Lafayette put 93 up on Colgate on Wednesday and we held them to 59.

Colgate with a 10-point lead over Boston U in the final minute. Colgate will move into undisputed possession of 2nd place. If they were to beat the Bison next Monday, the race would become very tight - especially since Colgate would likely hold the tiebreaker at that point.

Army 6-28 on threes. Those sort of nights happen . . . But Army was also outrebounded by a huge margin by LC. They only got 6 out of 39 available offensive rebounds. Even with LC having the best defensive rebounding team they've put on the floor during the entire O'Hanlon era, there is no excuse for that sort of performance by Army.

The end of the Lehigh-American game was wild. Down 1 with 45 seconds to play, American drove in for a layup and got blocked. Brennan flipped out at the no-call and get's a T. Lehigh puts Pat Andre (an 87% FT shooter) on the line and he misses the first, makes the second. Lehigh inbounds to Kahron Ross who runs the shot clock down before driving in and misses the layup. Nelson brings the ball up with 15 seconds left and while looking over at the bench, get's the ball stolen. Instead of dribbling out the clock and waiting to get fouled, Lehigh goes for a fast break layup and misses with 5-6 seconds still left. American pushes up court, passes up two open threes to pass the ball inside, but time expires before they get a shot up. Just an incredible comedy of errors.

Lafayette blew out Loyola today 84-67, outscoring them 26-14 over the last 9 minutes. LC was 19-31 on twos and 10-30 on threes. But the biggest factor was LC outrebounding Loyola 39-22. LC has one of the best rebounding teams they have had over O'Hanlon's 23 years, but there is no excuse for Loyola getting outrebounded that badly. With the win, LC moves into a tie for 6th in the PL.

Current standings:

Bucknell 11-2
Colgate . 9-4
Boston U 8-6
Navy . . 8-6
Lehigh . 7-7
Holy Cross 6-8
Lafayette 6-8
Army . . 6-8
Loyola . 6-8
American 2-12

Assuming the Bison hold onto the 1 seed, I don't like seeing LU in 5th, where they've landed after a 4-game winning streak. Otoh, Boston U is in the midst of a mini-collapse - partly due to injuries. Hankerson missed five games before returning Saturday, but Walter Whyte has missed the last couple.

Lehigh plays @Colgate, Army, @Loyola, and Lafayette to close the season. None of those are givens and Colgate and Lafayette could give them a lot of trouble. With seven teams within two games of each other there's still a lot of opportunity for movement. Their four wins have all been close (two in OT) as were the prior two losses. There's no telling with their team which version will show up.

In their win at Army, Holy Cross got 60 of their 70 points from freshmen.

Patriot League Down the Stretch

1. BUCKNELL (13-2) @Holy Cross, Navy, @American
2. COLGATE (9-6) @Loyola, Army, Holy Cross
3. NAVY (9-6) @Boston, @Bucknell, Loyola
4. BOSTON U (8-7) Navy, Lafayette, @Army
5. LEHIGH (8-7) Army, @Loyola, Lafayette
6. HOLY CROSS (7-8) Bucknell, American, @Colgate
7. ARMY (6-9) @Lehigh, @Colgate, Boston
7. LAFAYETTE (6-9) American, @Boston, @Lehigh
7. LOYOLA (6-9) Colgate, Lehigh, @Navy
10. AMERICAN (3-12) @Lafayette, @Holy Cross, Bucknell

I think I have the tiebreakers through 5th correct. Colgate swept Navy; Lehigh and Boston University split against each other and against Bucknell and against Colgate, but Boston University has a win against Navy and Lehigh was swept by Navy.

Navy is currently playing at Lehigh in front of a crowd that is no more than 100 persons. They likely would have drawn 350 if it weren't for the snow.

Lehigh sure is playing great right now. I just hope they are peaking too soon and Bucknell pulls it together and peaks at the right time.

Gotta hope Colgate loses tomorrow. Gate has an easy final 3, but if they could lose one, it would open the door for Lehigh to take the 3 over Gate. In a head to head tiebreaker with Colgate, Lehigh would win. If it is a 3 way tie adding in Navy it would be a different story.

Pathetically HC87 (IndianHoop) has launched another multi-post diatribe about how the PL is dragging down HC and how they could quickly get into the Big East.
"We could be in the Big East tomorrow", says he.

I imagine he also believes in Big Foot, unicorns, and that the sun goes around the earth. Sad.

For the sake of accuracy Lehigh beat a very down Army team tonight. Just over 1,000 patrons were financially in attendance, most posing as empty seats. In fairness to the missing, travel was beyond treacherous. My usual 50 minute travel from work to Stabler took just over 2 hours due to closed roads and accidents. I did see the second half. Lehigh was pretty good but Army just looked sad.

Delusional is the only word to describe any thought of HC to the Big East. If the Big East were looking to expand, I would put Holy Cross at around 150 on their priority list of teams to recuruit.

HC has been a mediocre at best team in around the 25th ranked conference in the nation. They have an arena way too small for the Big East (sure, they could play in a 1/10 full DCU Center, but that wouldn’t look to good). Why on earth would the Big East want them (and I would also ask why would HC want the Big East)?

Seriously, I can’t imagine the rationale that would make someone believe the BE would want HC? Is it because of the large number of Catholic schools in the BE? By that logic, I guess mighty Saint Francis PA should also be getting ready to add the BE logo to their court? Or is the logic that HC was a basketball power almost a century ago so the BE wants that “tradition”? By that logic, I think the first Orange Bowl winner should be expecting to contend with Alabama in the college football playoff next year

Holy Cross is a great academic institution and they are in a good league with other schools who equally value academics. If they desperately want out of the PL for some reason, they can enjoy playing in the MAAC or NEC where they will be competing against schools with lower academic standards in equally empty gyms!

To be fair, 95% of HC fans get this and unfortunately, they have to deal with the constant crazy logic coming from a small minority.

The fact is Holy Cross is pulling the PL down. If they would have performed up to the level of the flagship program they were supposed to be, the league would have a higher profile.

It was HC who threatened to leave in the mid 2000's which would have been the end of the PL. That is when the league gave in to HC & voted to allow basketball scholarships. Of course, HC was the first to award which propelled them to a multi-year run as a league power.

However, all HC has to show for any of this over the last 15 years is an NIT upset of Notre Dame and a "cute little run as a 10-seed" to a PL tourney championship ... with players the HC "faithful" demeaned for most of their careers.

Meanwhile, Bucknell has several wins over ranked teams, both regular season and post-season, and ended 2006 with a national ranking. Lehigh knocked off Duke in the NCAA's, and both Bucknell and Lehigh have produced NBA players.

Where has Holy Cross been? Despite spending more $$$ than most PL programs since the mid 2000's, they have done nothing to promote the PL's stature nationally. If they would have been the equal to Bucknell and Lehigh over the last decade, it is safe to assume the PL would be at a place ... though still not up to Big East standards ... that would make most HC posters rejoice.

And, FWIW, Holy Cross was in the MAAC for 7 years before joining the PL. They had one winning season overall in those 7 years. In its last 3 years in the conference, the MAAC ranked 21st, 24th and 22nd of 33 conferences. The first 3 years after they left, the MAAC was 16th, 18th and 18th. So, you can make the point, they pulled the MAAC down as well.

Save for a several year run where they had a distinct scholarship advantage, HC is a middle of the road basketball program. Not even worth the time to read their fan board.

Well said. Basketball fans may forget that any athletic conference is about many sports. While basketball may be the marquee sport for some, the success of the conference should be judged by the success in every sport. Prior to the last 2-3 years, HC had the worst overall athletic program in the PL. They have improved under the new AD, but still have not demonstrated the ability to win consistently in any sport other than baseball. HC has done nothing to elevate the status of the PL in any sport, let alone basketball.

Zack Thomas received another Player of the Week award. He tied Tim Kempton's record for 7 in a season:

Also, congratulations to Zack (651 points and counting) for breaking the Bucknell all time single season scoring record that was previously held by Mike Muscala (637 points).

He seems like a good guy and a decent coach, but they consistently under performed year after year. It was only a matter of time. Have to wonder if the clock is running out for Brennan as well. All the player turnover and poor W-L record has to be wearing thin.

If a school is looking for an expert in getting more from less, then he is their man. Great recruiter but very mediocre coach.

Lehigh may be the preseason favorite next year, so that may be his best chance to get out. They underachieved last year and they underachieved this year, so I doubt that will have schools beating down his door.

Brennan has two more years left on his contract, and I doubt American wants to eat that much money. They could be a first division team next year if Gasperini comes back healthy, which would save his job. Otoh, if they have any more high-profile transfers, that may force AU's hand.

This move was met with great disapproval by many HC alums. At least they didn't end up with the nickname of River Hawks, as the Susquehanna Crusaders are now called.

With all respect to a strong academic school, seems like a fight they didn't need. Alum feedback that they need to move to a different sports league and now this?

Boston U SG Cheddi Mosely is transferring. He got a lot of playing time his first two years. Then missed most of his 3rd year due to a suspension for disciplinary reasons. Then missed virtually all of last year with an injury. Will transfer somewhere for graduate school and presumably be eligible immediately.

Although not confirmed as yet, the new Loyola coach is reportedly Tavaras Hardy. He has been an assistant at Georgia Tech, would followed a few years at Georgetown, and a fairly long stint under Bill Carmody at Northwestern where he also had played in college.

He may turn out to be very good, but seems like a bit of a gamble. First, he has no head coaching experience. Secondly, no midmajor recruiting experience. And third, no recruiting high academic prospects. Northwestern has reasonable standards for basketball players - but nowhere close to the Patriot League academic index.

When Loyola hired Donna Woodruff as AD last spring, she came to them through the Parker Executive Search firm. So, when the AD goes looking for a head coach, guess what she does ... she uses Parker who just happened to have Tavares Hardy as a client.
