The field has been set for the 2017 Gulf Coast Showcase at Estero, FL. Penn will play Northern Illinois in a first round game at 5:00 pm on November 20th. The first round schedule is as follows:

11:00 am - Missouri-Kansas City vs. Manhattan
1:30 pm - Georgia Southern vs. Missouri State
5:00 pm - PENN vs. Northern Illinois
7:30 pm - Towson vs. Florida Atlantic

bdglobalsports.com/?p=2748

While the field is lacking in more notable teams that have been in the tournament in past years(Houston and George Mason, for example), it is a good chance for the Quakers to win a early season tournament and build up some early season wins, although I am not so certain how it will impact in a favorable way for the RPI (since several were sub-200 last year).

I agree. While other Ivy League teams play in Maserati and Cadillac events, the Quakers are playing in something equivalent to a Yugo with four flat tires and a blown engine. I was hoping that, even with this being primarily a mid-major event, there would be at least a team or teams worth getting excited about. Then again, the Quakers have only one winning season since 2006-07 and have had some really ugly seasons recently. I guess that most tournament organizers don't find them too desirable to offer a slot in a more prestigious tournament because of that recent history. It's a winnable tournament but, then again, what does that really accomplish?

A victory in the first game might provide an opportunity to beat the Tigers.

Not sure if Towson is orange and black.

If they get to the final, they could play the Kangaroos of UMKC.

Only three of these teams were Pomeroy top-200 last year: Penn, MO. St., and Towson (116 - highest in field).

Like I said in another thread, considering we can only do 2 of these every 4 years, this is total miss (and incredibly lame as Jeff said). It's pretty sad if this is the best we can get in a preseason tournament.

I’m actually relieved to read the snarky comments here about the lack of competition in this tournament and that we’re going to rack up some valueless wins and probably win the tournament. I was initially concerned when I read the sponsor’s evidently over-hyped descriptions of the other teams from the tournament website, including:

“On the men’s side, the Gulf Coast Showcase is strictly for mid-major programs and this year’s event has some of the best rising coaches in all of college basketball,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global, the tournament owner. “Coach Masiello has led Manhattan to two NCAA Tournaments, Pat Skerry has won 20-plus games in three of the past four seasons and Coach Richardson set the school-record for wins last year at UMKC.”

The men’s tournament field is headlined by Towson, a favorite to win the Colonial Conference title this season, Georgia Southern, who many believe will contend for an NCAA Tournament berth in the Sun Belt, and a rebuilding Florida Atlantic squad whose campus is in nearby Boca Raton.

Whew!

Of course, if we weren't angry and snarky, we wouldn't post here.

How many fans of other teams in the tournament are looking at the field and thinking the same thing that Penn fans are ?

The tournament organizers pretty much have to overhype it simply to pique interest in it. However, the sad reality is that it is a lower end tournament with a not-ready-for-prime-time array of teams, most of which if, should they make the NCAA Tournament, would be no higher than a #14 seed and, more likely, a #15 or #16 seed. The suspicion is that Penn probably was not offered much, if anything, regarding a choice of tournaments, primarily because of their recent pedigree, and took what Coach D thought was the best for his team. Then again, Florida in November is not too bad of a consolation prize.

Non-league games against top level teams may be good for the raters and stats guys, but I think the benefits of getting beat badly by top teams does little for league game preparedness.

I don't buy the argument that it was all SD had as an option. Cornell played in Las Vegas last year against Wyoming and USC. What kind of recent pedigree did they have?

But if he had more options... why take this one? We can only do 2 every 4 years, why wouldn you use one against a bunch of mediocre teams we could probably schedule directly?

Don't see it helping recruiting or team rankings unless a few of those teams surprise. To hopefully get some wins and build confidence maybe?

A fair assessment and a good comparison. I probably should have investigated further related to the lower Ivy echelon instead of using just HYP as the yardstick.

The only other logical argument (and this is also debatable) is that, maybe, Coach D may want to instill confidence in a rather young team with a few easier games/early season wins (assuming that this happens....we know what has happened in past years with games that were thought to be winnable). I don't know what was behind the evaluation and final selection of which tournament the Quakers would play in but I can see this being the case. I guess that my judgment may be more related to disappointment in seeing how the Quakers would fair against a stronger mid-major team in an early-season tournament (the women's GCS has Notre Dame and defending champion South Carolina in its field).

Heck, I still remember in the early 1980s when the Quakers went to Tokyo for a tournament (I think that it was called the Suntory Ball), played a good Louisville team tough in the first game, then got their doors blown off by Oregon State in the next one.

I'm curious to see who the last four opponents will be since this tournament is exempt (the Quakers will be playing 30 games this season).

Those aren't gimme games. Maybe that makes the risk/reward poor in your eyes, since losses feel worse than going down to a power team, but it would be a solid accomplishment to win that tournament.

Well, Steve has to know that Penn's only shot at the post season (without winning the ILT) is a strong W/L result and an Ivy tournament showing. You can't go to some of the post season tournaments with a losing record so 3 potential W's would be appealing against other mid 100's mid major's. If they can go something like 9-4 and then 8-6 or 7-7 in Ivy League they would be in line for a post season tourney no? It's a stepping stone for the program and SD may want to build confidence with some potential W's.

no one said anything about "racking up valueless wins", it's lame because none of these teams matter. There's really little upside. If we win, whatevs. If we lose, man this tournament wasn't very good.

There are basically three types of MTEs:
1) Eight team bracketed events not on ESPN
2) Eight team bracketed events on ESPN
3) Auto-semis events where mid-majors don't get a chance to advance even if they win, but instead play one or two of the big name schools and then two or three in a pod hosted by another mid

Type 1 MTEs are dying (Great Alaska Shootout) or languishing with low profile schools. Basically have to find a major TV partner or perish.

Type 2 MTEs are thriving. Schools are essentially signing deals with ESPN to do the rotation of their made-for-TV MTEs (since you can only do the same MTE tournament once every four years). I don't know if Princeton and Harvard have signed deals with ESPN, but they are certainly in the rotation now (having flipped their participation in 2015-16 and 2017-18).

Type 3 MTEs are also thriving due to the big names and big arenas ultimately involved. Ivies participate in these a lot, but I HATE the format. Get one, maybe two, shots at big name schools on their court and then usually two or three road/neutral games against usually blah mids.

Here is some info on the Gulf Coast Showcase from Penn Basketball.

http://www.pennathletics.com/news/men-s-basketball ...

Now in its fifth year, the Gulf Coast Showcase is an event geared toward mid-major programs. The NCAA-exempt event allows Penn to play 30 regular-season games this season instead of the 27 mandated by the Ivy League.

THE FIELD IN 2016-17
Florida Atlantic: 10-20 overall, 6-12 Conference USA (11th)
Georgia Southern: 18-15 overall, 11-7 Sun Belt (t-3rd)
Manhattan: 10-22 overall, 5-15 MAAC (10th)
Missouri State: 17-16 overall, 7-11 MVC (6th)
Northern Illinois: 15-17 overall, 7-11 Mid-American (4th West)
Penn: 13-15, 6-8 Ivy League (4th)
Towson: 20-13 overall, 11-7 CAA (3rd)
UMKC: 18-17 overall, 8-6 WAC (4th)

Thanks for pointing this out, RBG.

Based on this, it may be that SD just wants to get his young team more game experience regardless of the caliber of competition.

If you link on the URL, you'll see that prior to the tournament Penn will play ... drum roll... Penn State-Brandywine.

SRSLY? Who's the coach, Hoops Wyeth?

Wondering now if there will even be a Gulf Coast Showcase after the arena there has its roof torn off before being inundated with 10+ feet of storm surge - a distinct possibility under current Irma projections.

That would not be a good thing since Germain Arena is being used as a shelter during Irma.

True. I understand that it took the Romans nearly 50 years with the use of three tribes of Indian slaves to haul in the necessary rocks to build the foundation of the Palestra as a fortress against invading Dutchmen from the north. I can still sense the smell of ancient battles whenever I enter its crumbling ruins.
