The Hawks are now three games into the season - at the start of what figures to be a multi-year rebuilding process. Mike at the moment seems to be firmly established as one of the four Hawks big men (PF/C) in the rotation, along with Ilyasova, 7-0 center Dewayne Dedmon, and 1st round pick 6-10 John Collins. For three games - a win at Dallas plus losses at Charlotte and Brooklyn - Mike's stats look like this:

1. 14 min; 2-2 on twos; 0-1 on threes; 0-0 FTs; 4 rebounds; 2 assists; 4 points.

2. 19 min; 2-4 on twos; 1-4 on threes; 2-2 FTs; 4 rebounds; 9 points.

3. 25 min; 3-5 on twos; 0-1 on the threes; 2-3 FTs; 6 rebounds; 1 assist; 8 points.

TOTAL. 58 min; 7-11 on twos; 1-6 on threes; 4-5 FTs; 14 rebounds; 3 assists; 21 points.

Mike starting tonight in place of Ilyasova. Not off to a great start 0-3. Hawks are getting clobbered in the 2nd Q again.

Very good night for Mike getting the start last night. 14 points, 10 rebounds and a handful of assists in 31 minutes. 2-4 from 3pt range as well.

Hawks look like they are going to be terrible this year however.

Mike had a big game as a starter last night in a 91-86 loss. He played 31 minutes, had 14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Shot 3-7 on twos, 2-4 on threes, and 2-2 from the line.

This was Mike's first double double.

Mike is back in the starting lineup with Ilyasova out again for 1-2 weeks. He'll have his hands full today vs. the Bucks.

Yes. I think only Phoenix, Chicago, and maybe the Knicks can challenge them for that spot. I am sure their game plan is to get a high lottery pick to fuel their rebuilding process.

Try being a Sixers' fan with 3-4 years of losing during "The Process". Pro hoops is not what it used to be. IMO, Mega-guaranteed contracts have ruined The Association.

Muscala with another start in Philly...played just five minutes andhasnt been back since. 0-2 with a rebound and steal. Not sure if he was injured, I missed the time he was on the floor., but if not, he seems to be missing a great opportunity with Ilyasova out.

Did anybody see Muscala get dunked over by Ben Simmons? It is the Play of the Day on NBC Sports Philly.

BTW, Muscala needs to be more aggressive on O. In the NBA, you need to make your own shot.

It never looks good for someone to dunk when you are the defender shown on the video - but in Mike's defense, he wasn't guarding Simmons. He was defending Emblid and tried to help at the last minute after Simmons blew by his man. But too late.

Mike is now out with a sprained ankle. Expected to return by the end of the week.

Finally looks like Mike is recovered from his injury. As the article notes, there's quite a bit of depth at the 4 and 5 spots (though Dedmon is still out). But given the Hawks dismal play, I'd think Mike will get some opportunities to prove himself.

Mike has been back with the Hawks for a few games now and so far playing time is almost non-existent. He got his first action in last nites game versus Portland, with basically mop up duty. Zero points, 2 boards. Looks like he is the fourth PF but could also backup at C, I suppose. Meanwhile CJ has 20 points and 6 assists. Probably was a little hard for Mike to watch in some ways.

Mike played 6 minutes last night at LA and made the most of it. Shot 2-2 on twos, 1-1 on threes, 2-2 from the line for 9 points - and added 3 boards and 1 steal. Hopefully they will start to ease him into more playing time.

Actually he has played four games since his return. Shot 0-1 in his first game, on January 5th. Still it's a spectacular return.

Stats for the four games:

40 minutes, 5-6 on twos, 3-3 on threes, 4-4 on FT's, 13 rebounds, 2 steals, 23 points.

Yeah, missed the 4th quarter of the Portland game. I had watched the first three and he had not appeared with the Hawks down 23 so I never saw him come in.

As a side note one of the first things that happened after Mike came in was CJ going out. The PL's two NBA players played on the same floor at the same time for a grand total of 1:27 this season. (Unless they are both in the finals :>) )

Mike had one of his best games since coming back - 14 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk in only 13 minutes. But also picked up 5 PF trying to guard Dwight Howard. He made 3 FTs to put Atlanta up 1 with under 3 minutes to play. Those were Atlanta's last points as Charlotte closed on a 12-0 run.

Great game for Mike today in a win over the Knicks at MSG. Made a 3 with 47 seconds left to pull the Hawks within 1. Then assisted on a Bazemore 3 with 8 seconds left to give them the lead. Ended up with 15 pts (6-8, 3-5), 6 reb in 23 minutes.

That's possible - but I think there is a good chance it is simply a function of Mike playing well lately, shaking off the rust from the serious ankle injury that caused him to miss two full months. Remember that he was playing 20-25 minutes each game before he got hurt.

Since Mike returned, here are his stats per 40 minutes (a full game for a top starter):

- 70% on 2-point FGs (16-23)
- 60% on 3-point FGs (15-25)
- 80% effective FG pct.
- 87% on FTs
- 19 ppg
- 10 rpg
- 2 apg
- 1 bpg
- 1 spg
- 3.5 fouls
- 1.5 turnovers

Overall these are the best numbers of his career. (I realize that he wouldn't sustain that production level if he played 40 mpg, but looking at it that way helps to give some context to his numbers.)

The Hawks could potentially be interested in trading Mike. He can opt-out of his $5 million contract for next year. He may do that with the goal of getting a longer term deal somewhere else. If the Hawks aren't interested in giving Mike an extension (which may be the case because they didn't do it last year), why not trade him now to get something in return?

I doubt Mike will opt out since the NBA in general is facing financial stagnation. The cap for next year is barely going to rise, and teams have already committed money based on a much higher estimate of what the cap would be. It turned into a buyers' market this past summer - which is why MM got a lot less than equivalent players got the year before. This year will be worse for mid-tier players. Fwiw, there are seven NBA teams with any real space under the salary cap.

True, they obviously would have been significantly better with Milsapp, but had they paid him the $30 Million a year he ended up with, they would have ensured an era of perpetual mediocrity. With him gone, they have a good shot at getting Bagley, Ayton, or Doncic in the draft. Plus they are miles under next year's cap - unlike most NBA teams - which will give them a chance to sign some good free agents down the road. In their best long-term scenario, they will get the top pick but be bad for another year and add another high pick. Then start to spend some money.

Two more free throws now at 24.

A huge loss for the Hawks who not only stay in bottom 3 of NBA draft, but they have Minnesota’s lottery protected 1st rounder and Minn in last playoff spot on West. So a double special loss.

I think it is definitely a strength now. Mike is hitting about 40% of his threes for the year - which is very good - but he has been shooting them even better recently. In 14 March games, he hit about 45%. A 6-11 player who can shoot like that from outside and force a big man on the other team to chase him 24 feet from the basket is a valuable commodity.

Yes, he has one more year for a guaranteed $5 Million, but he also has an opt-out clause which would allow him to become a free agent next month. Given the minimal cap space that most NBA teams have, he may decide to stay where he is.

Nice highlights video. BTW, I like the buzz cut much better than the man bun.

Sounds like Charles Lee may be headed to Milwaukee. Is Moose next? It would be a good move for him. Atlanta is going to be very bad for a very long time.

Mike was back this weekend for reunion. Sounds like he plans to stay in Atlanta this year.

A good draft from a Muscala perspective tonight. Atlanta had three first round picks, including #3 and #19. They ended up with PG Trae Young (plus a future first rounder) in a trade, and then got SG/SF Kevin Huerter from Maryland with #19. Neither of these players will affect Mike's playing time. We'll see who they get at #30, but it will likely be a big who won't see a lot of playing time early.

Hawks took Nova's Omari Spellman, who is a 6-9 PF. I doubt Spellman will take many minutes away from Mike as a rookie.

If Mike stays healthy, he will get plenty of time this year.

Has he officially opted in for this year? I have not seen any reports confirming one way or the other.

I haven't seen anything either, although his comments in the Bucknell video and in one article make it appear that is his intent. Last year the final day to opt out was June 29th.

Good move on Mike's part. But I'll be surprised if he finishes the season in Atlanta.

It makes sense for Mike. Atlanta is going to be terrible this year and many years to come.

Deal is official.

I hate the NBA other than tracking Muscala so I know nothing about OKC. What does this mean for playing time?

Looks like it was a three team deal and Muscala is now a 76er.

PhillySportsTalk is reporting that Muscala is expected to get a lot of PT as the backup PF.

Finally I have a reason to become a Sixers fan again. Congrats to Mike. This is a great opportunity with a team on the rise.

I find this interesting. The 76ers dumped a couple of non rotation players in this trade to get Mike. The sixers have a lot of depth in the 4 and 5 spots. I wish him nothing but the best and hope he can make the roster.

Somebody explain to me why Atlanta would trade for Carmelo Anthony and buy out his contract. I don't understand the NBA.

Teams like expiring contracts to create cap space for next season. I know there is more involved than just this however but this is a big reason. And Mike is in the same situation with his expiring contract.

Atlanta is a dumpster fire is why. I think Mike will enjoy his time in Philly and I do think he’ll lots of PT as he enters the prime of his career.

A Mike Muscala Top Ten list from a website called thesixersense.com

They apparently like Mike and the pick up.

I can't wait to buy a Muscala Sixers jersey! It will be my first NBA jersey since high school.

Was reading about the trade on Twitter. From what I saw, quite a few people were not that excited about the addition of Muscala. People in Philly were hoping for Khawi and that didn’t happen. Also, they didn’t like the man bun. Hopefully fans give him a chance.
