Time to start this thread, especially as a real possibility starts to emerge that the Bison could end up carrying a scholarship over to the Class of 2019.

Here are some of the players in this class who have Bison offers or interest. I know there are more out there, and I will try to add to the list. The ones shown with interest but no offer as of yet are either players who Bison coaches have traveled to see or else players who have made an unofficial visit.

"6’5 G/F Donovan Grant led Campbell in scoring tonight with 25 points on 7-11 shooting from behind the arc. The 2019 sniper listed Bucknell as his only offer. Interest from Kansas, ECU, Rice, UMASS, and MTSU."

And two other names with Bison interest but no offers:

1. "Unsigned senior, 6'9 F Dima Zdor, St. James School (MD), is currently receiving strong interest from Vanderbilt, Bucknell, Austin-Peay, Wichita St, UC Santa Barbara, USC, South Carolina, and Dayton. Recent offers from James Madison and Utah State."

Zdor is from the Ukraine and Verbal Commits shows recent offers from Lehigh, St. Francis (PA), and Utah State.

2. Paxson Wojcik 6-4 SG (IN) - has offers from DePaul, San Jose State, and Columbia.

thought i would pop this thread back up to the top as 2019 recruiting will heat up this month.

as reported elsewhere, 2018 offeree Sloan Seymour is taking a prep year so presumably we should add him to our 2019 list

You mean a top 5 all time guard who might get some NBA consideration? If so, I'm on board.

Bison offer to Schlee, who is a 6-3 CG. Also has a Mt. St. Mary's offer. Probably will, get more soon. He is a 3-sport athlete who plays for Iakdale, the alma mater of Zach Thomas.

His AAU team reports that George Washington, Rice, George Mason, Rutgers, UMBC, and Marshall have all expressed interest.

Given the Zach Thomas connection and how well he did as a Bison, I would think that we should have a leg up on the other schools.

He will have a Zach Thomas like July and get a bunch more. I like getting in early and establishing ourselves with him. Some guys have a soft spot for the schools that are there from the start

With a recent offer from Yale, Buckley now has offers from Bucknell, George Mason, James Madison, Delaware, New Hampshire, American, NJIT, Duquesne,Youngstown State, Lafayette, and Yale. The Bison offer dates back to October 2016 - prior to his sophomore season.

Given his comments in the linked article, the Yale offer is a bit worrisome. But Yale has been a mediocre (or worse) program forever, so hopefully he cares about winning championships and playing in the Big Dance. Yale has played in exactly one NCAA tournament in the past 55 years.

New offer to Alex Timmerman 6-9 C (IL). Bucknell is the first to offer

Nice to see the staff offering some big guys the past two days. I trust the staff but I also want to make sure we aren't just extending offers to bigs because we are in desperate need

I'm not worried about being the first school to offer kids in April. The majority of players who end up playing D1 don't have any offers at this stage of their junior year, and someone has to be first. As you say, we just have to hope the staff is doing a good job of evaluation.

history indicates this staff does not freely extend offers, so i am not concerned about any offers extended this early. there is, of course, always the question of evaluation and unknown of how a player will develop going forward. they could have offered Verbeek or Willis among others they looked at for 2018 if they were panicing about signing a big.

I don't think so - since his comment was from early this morning. To begin with, there is no-one on the planet who knows less about recruiting than HC70 (except perhaps his fictitious "AAU friend"). He gives enormous credence to the ESPN rankings - which are a complete joke. Almost any player who is tall as a freshman gets a 3 or 4 star ranking, which sticks with them forever. Of the Bison offers in the past few days, three or four are ESPN four star players - Brayboy, Jarvis, Wahab, and maybe Evtimov. The ESPN ranking may or may not mean anything.

If you look back through the ESPN rankings, there are tons of 3 and 4 star players who never even get a D1 offer. Lafayette's incoming big man, Sean Good, got a 4 star from ESPN. Looks like he will be a solid PL center, but certainly not a 4 star player. Will not be as good as Foulland, Kempton, Muscala, etc. - and I wouldn't be surprised if he is not as good as Trist or Mintz.

Offer to Tom Welch, a 6-8 PF from Illinois - Naperville North. Has offers from Loyola (IL), Ball State, Kent State, Miami (OH), Wofford, Furman, Brown, Western IL, and FAU.

One interesting thing about Welch is that he is one of the state's top soccer goalkeepers, having led his team to two consecutive IL large school championships.

were he to commit, he'd be the second Tom Welch to play hoops for the Orange and the Blue. The first was recruited by and played at least a year for Charlie Woollum and staff, and then played the last part of his career at Bucknell for Pat Flannery and staff. I'm sure B137 can refresh our memories.

Based on the above list, the Bison now have 27 offers outstanding - 14 to players 6-8 or taller. Last year at this time, there were 14 offers outstanding, 6 of whom were to big men. The Bison came close to landing two who were on the early list - Ryan Davis and Quentin Millora-Brown - but lost out to Vermont and Maine respectively.

One of the earliest offers last year, btw, was to Andrew Funk.

Not sure where Maine came from either. That’s what comes from typing on an iPhone and not proofreading.

were he to commit, he'd be the second Tom Welch to play hoops for the Orange and the Blue. The first was recruited by and played at least a year for Charlie Woollum and staff, and then played the last part of his career at Bucknell for Pat Flannery and staff. I'm sure B137 can refresh our memories.

The first Tom Welch '97 was a freshman my Senior year, so yes, he played his first season under Woollum and the last three under Flannery. He was a solid contributor, coming off the bench for many minutes even as a freshman and then starting at center after Brian Anderson graduated. Great person too.

Seymour just committed to Siena and Jamion Christian. Thay have had a number of players transfer out and also a couple decommits, so they definitely need players. Having said that, a number of the Albany-area people who have seen him play have not been impressed. For example:

" In AAU, he was playing with elite talent and wasn’t expected to defend (no one does). All his strengths were accentuated and he was able to be solid as a shooter off the bench — drawing offers (having his dad never hurts). Watch him at Shaker HS and he looks like he might get cut by St Rose. Could he be a useful player for JC? Perhaps, but his motor stinks, he’s virtually useless beyond his 3 point shot, and he didn’t get better from JR to SR year of HS. I would wait on his prep year and see what happens but wouldn’t be the worst gamble you could make in May."

"If he had good committable D1 offers he wouldn’t have prepped. Those P6 schools you named pulled their offers. Don’t know for a fact on the A10’s but I’d guess most were no longer interested too. He was not good this year for Shaker and personally I’m not sold on taking him at Siena. . . Sloan is prepping becasue he isn’t a good basketball player."

There is a self-reported offer to PG Christopher (C.J.) Finnick, who is currently Class of 2022, i.e. a freshman. There is very little info about him, other than he is 5-10, resides in NJ, and is going to Northfield Mount Hermon. If the report is accurate, I believe that is the earliest Bison offer ever. Evan Buckley had a documented offer early in his sophomore year, which likely was the earliest.

Interesting gamble on a project by O'Hanlon. Most sources say Quinn is now 6-11 but he had drawn almost no interest and zero offers. Apparently played pretty well at some tournament last month. LC has a better big man coming in this year as a freshman - Sean Good, a thin 6-10 center from outside of Harrisburg - but he may not be as good as some of the hype. His stats (other than blocked shots) were not terribly impressive given his height, but he made the state writers' 3A (fourth largest) all-state 1st team. HOWEVER he failed to be selected to the 6-man Harrisburg all-area team - a team picked by people who had seen him play a fair amount.

KenZ, one note on Quinn. His high school, Northern Highlands, is the same one that produced 6-11 Bison big man Terence Skyrm in the late 90's. Skyrm eventually transferred to Albright, where he did pretty well.

As pointed out above, the women now have two from that state - but I can't recall a men's team player from Kentucky. Some of the more obscure places that have produced Bison players over the past 20 years include Croatia, Slovenia, Bahamas, Cameroon, Nova Scotia, Germany, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Maine, Alabama, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

i got the feeling we never registered with Welch, he could not remember us when asked to list his offers months ago.

Beran not mentioning us as one of the schools working hard on him after we attended so many of his games is not good.

Marcus Domask has picked up offers from Akron, Western Michigan and Northern Ky over the last two weeks. instinct says he had a good visit when he was at Bucknell.

they may know that, but i don't think it is safe for us to assume it. as long as Sestina leaving is a possibility they need to proceed with recruiting as if they have to replace him.

looking at the roster, the for sure open scholarship seems destined for a guard presumably a pg or strong cg. if the fourth scholarship does open up (and we'de all be happy if it doesn't) then there is some greater question how they might prefer to use it. personally, i go best player we can get, other than not a second pg.

if Nate has not made his final decicision yet, having guys coming in for ov's in September, probably making selections in October is actually good for us as it gives time for that to be resolved

edit: and now rereading your question, i guess that is the same as assuming that we have two scholarships

Yes, Schlee never really got any recruiting traction. Had an offer from Mt. St. Mary's in December when Jamion Christian was coach and then an offer from Bucknell in April. No offers since then, despite two major AAU recruiting periods. The offer from MSM, which of course has a new coach, may have been off the table, and the Bison offer may have been as well.

On the football side, he had offers from Robert Morris, Delaware State, UNH, and then Kent State a few days ago.

He looks really young. Also, 6'-3" is pretty small for a SF these days. I hope that he has some major league skills or plans to grow a few inches. 24/7 says that he has a 50% chance of committing to Bucknell.

Domask was said to be 6-3 in the fall prior to his junior year, but not since then. But 247 often doesn't update a player's height from what it is when they first enter him into their data base. That is often true with Verbal Commits, Rivals, etc.

Domask actually was listed at 6-6 on his team's roster last winter and was also called 6-6 in some articles about him, such as this one.

Btw, 247 is not always reliable when it comes to offers. Best site for that is Verbal Commits. But the best way to check in the majority of cases - if you have the time - is to look at a prospect's twitter account.

New offer to Alexander Rice, a 6-2 CG from NJ. Son of Monmouth coach King Rice. Has offers from Illinois State, Rutgers, and Pitt, all from over a year ago.

He also is quoted as saying how he'd love to play for his Dad. No idea if the mediocre Monmouth academics would be an issue.

Rice transferred from Mater Dei in NJ to the Patrick School, a perennial powerhouse, a few weeks ago. He left Mater Dei after their coach decided to leave.

Rice says in the article: "“I have offers from Bucknell, Monmouth, a bunch of Ivy League Schools and I have A-10 schools now showing interest.” No mention of the old offers from Rutgers and Illinois State.

One interesting item is that Rice, who has always been called a CG, will be spending much of his time at the two this year since Patrick has an All-American PG in Al-Amir Dawes, who has offers from Providence, UConn, Clemson, St. John's, Minnesota, and many others.

He will be playing in nice facilities, as Patrick has a new gym and locker room funded by Kyrie Irving, an alum from the school's predecessor, St. Patrick's.

Looking at his twitter account, he also had offers from NJIT and Cornell. Overall offer list appears to be Penn, Yale, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Bucknell, Lehigh, Boston U, NJIT, and Drexel. Penn was recruiting him very heavily last fall and winter.

Btw, he played on the same Jersey Shore Warriors team as Andrew Funk. Also the same Donofrio Classic team.

Scheduled dates for his other visits are Colgate 9/6-8 and Princeton 9/20-22. There is a good chance his Bucknell offer will either be accepted or gone before he ever makes it to Princeton.

He is a 6-8 PF from Allentown who played for Allentown Central Catholic this past year but is now enrolled at Perkiomen School.

For those keeping score, below are the likely candidates for the last scholarship based on official visits or recent visits by Bison coaches. It appears that the staff is looking to a PF for the last one, although with the number of big men now in the fold, that is no longer essential. It is not clear if any of the outstanding offers are conditional ones.

- Fowler , Mike planning official visit this month; 6-9 PF (NC) BUCKNELL OFFER May-2018 ; East Carolina, UNCW, JMU, High Point, Lipsomb, Columbia, Hampton, Norfolk, IUPUI, etc

- Kellman, Keeshawn made an official visit 8/26-28; 6-8 PF (PA) BUCKNELL offer Jul-2018 ; Colgate, Navy, Drexel, Lafayette, Hartford, St. Francis, and Princeton; taking officials to Colgate and Princeton.

Malachi Rhodes made an official visit 9/7-9/9; 6-8 PF from Georgia; reported offers from FGCU, Wofford, Winthrop, App State, Presbyterian, Jacksonville State, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, CCSU, etc.

- Williams , Brice recently listed Bucknell as one of five schools recruiting him the hardest; 6-7 SF NC BUCKNELL OFFER Jul-2018 ; Kansas State, GMU, Bona, Lafayette; has ACC interest but no offers.

Possible (Not PF's but high skill level):

- Acunzo , Mattia has Bucknell in final five - 6-8 SF (PA/Italy) BUCKNE LL OFFER Jul-2018 ; ODU, American, Toledo, Youngstown State, Wright State, App State, UNCG, Lipscomb, Canisius, Stony Brook, etc.

- Broadnax , Trae says Bucknell is one of five schools recruiting him the hardest - 6-3 CG (GA) BUCKNELL OFFER Apr-2018 ; Rice, Tulane, USF, Charleston, Charlotte, UAB, Wofford, Columbia, UMass, FGCU, FL State, Georgia, UNCG.

- - - - -

Three Commitments:

- Timmerman , Alex 6-9 Center (IL) BUCK NELL OFFER Apr-2018 ; COMMITTED TO BUCKNELL IN JUNE; Lafayette, plus W&M and Furman, per newspaper report.

- Van Der Heijden , Jake 6-8 PF (NC) BUCKNELL OFFER May-2018 ; COMMITTED TO BUCKNELL IN JULY; Charleston, Lipscomb, Lehigh, Western Carolina, Presbyterian, Columbia

- Rice , Alexander plans an official visit - 6-2 CG (NJ) BUCKNELL OFFER Jul-2018 ; COMMITTED TO BUCKNELL IN SEPTEMBER; Monmouth, Towson, Tulane, Manhattan, UNCG, Penn, Loyola, Illinois State, Rutgers, other Ivy's.

Kellman is an interesting prospect. He graduated at the end of May and is now doing a post-grad year. Had no offers for his senior year and then suddenly got a bunch of offers - most in late July. Lafayette, Colgate, Drexel, Navy, St. Francis, and Hartford. It is unclear if Bucknell's offer came without conditions, or if they were waiting on someone else.

One example would be where another player had been given an exclusive until a certain date, and thus the offer could not be accepted until after that date. Or similarly, a player might not be allowed to accept the offer until another player, thought to be better, had made a decision. Or a a player might not be able to accept the offer until after he made an official visit. Etc.

Similarly players are frequently given an exclusive for s few days around the time of their official visit. During that period, other players might not be allowed to commit. I know of one former Buson All-PL player who tried to commit but wasn’t allowed to because a player who had just visited still had an exclusive. One other situation might be where an offer is dependent on the athlete getting s certain SAT score.

One important thing for a recruiter is keeping certain players interested, even when they can’t be given a true offer yet. A lot of times they lose out on the top prospects and it is necessary to javelin s good Plan B in the pipeline.

KenZ might have some other examples.

Since his father is the HC, is it fair to assume that his children get free tuition? So, there is really nothing for Radford to lose.

Not always the case as its usually a perk provided to employees/faculty after certain number of years of service. When I was actively seeking employment it was between 5-10yrs of service. So many coaches may not reach that threshold? obviously could be a negotiated perk in each individual contract. Also of note in the Higher Ed community there is a fair amount of reciprocity that goes on in this respect (i.e. would you want to be a professor or staff members kid on campus? many want to go further afield).

That said, I wonder if he would/could be considered a recruited walk-on and not count against scholarship counts.

Radford is not in the national Tuition Exchange. Their tuition benefit may be limited (some are 50%) or non-existent. Bucknell is generous in that respect.

That is an interesting question. To begin, most tuition waivers etc are still considered financial aid by the NCAA's definition. Here are the general categories:

a) All funds administered by the institution, which include but are not limited to the following:

(1) Scholarships;
(2) Grants;
(3) Tuition waivers;
(4) Employee dependent tuition benefits, unless the parent or the legal guardian of a student-athlete has been employed as a full-time faculty/staff member for a minimum of five years; and
(5) Loans.

(b) Aid from government or private sources for which
the institution is responsible for selecting the recipient or determining the amount of aid, or
providing matching or supplementary funds for a
previously determined recipient.

So it appears that tuition benefits received by Jones - if he is receiving any - would not be considered any kind of special financial aid, since Coach Jones has been at Radford for eight years.

Secondly, the rules say that any athlete who is "recruited" for basketball becomes a counter if he receives any financial aid at all - even loans, tuition benefits, etc. But to be considered a "recruited" athlete, one must have either been offered a scholarship or taken an official visit or had an arranged off-campus visit with the coach. Given Miles Jones' status, probably none of those would apply. (There is a general exception in the rules as far as visits when a player is a close relation of the coach.)

So my guess is that he would not be a counter if he is receiving some sort of tuition benefit. BUT that only applies to tuition. If he is given room or board, I think his status would change to being a counter.

Per its HR website, Radford does not appear to have a remission program for employee dependents. So, either dad is paying the bill or Miles must be considered a counter against the NCAA limit.

Earlier this summer, Radford advertised a graduate assistant position for the men's basketball program and was very clear that the position received a stipend but no tuition benefit. So, the University has a hard-line stance on tuition benefits.

It’s all about accumulating them and seeing who develops. Most schools can’t do that, but an Ivy can bring in six or more recruits every season and see what happens.

Hey guys - Penn Fan here who pops by from time to time (and also confused why we don’t play each other since I think it would be a fun game now that we are on the right path again).

While the core of what Bison137 is saying is true, it isn’t true that Ivy’s can recruit 6+ kids every year. I’m not on very latest but there is a 4 year cycle limit on number of recruited basketball players, which I believe is 20.

Regarding Dingle, he’s a recruit I’m pretty excited about, even more so now that a very well respected non Penn poster nychoops chimed in to sing his praises. He had a great EBYL season and not quite sure why he didn’t get more offers honestly, but better for Penn!

In terms of our 2019 class it was expected to be big, replacing 6 man class leaving and frankly we’re still just digging out of mess we were in from last Jerome Allen years. While we have 3 kids in the 6’3” to 6’5” range in this upcoming class they all bring something a bit different and definitely aren’t all SGs.

Thanks for the post. Interesting info. One thing I would add is that some Ivy League schools have recruited more than 20 players over four years cycle by having a few players with really good grades etc. apply as regular students. I know of a number of cases where that is happened.

I’m sure that totally could have happened over the years, but unlikely it does now. The AI is averaged, but only kids designated as recruited athletes count towards that as far as I understand it, so a team would lose the benefit of a high AI kid.

Acunzo opts for Toledo. His HS is in northwestern PA. The other finalists were USF and ODU.

I wonder if the Bison could have still been in the mix before they used the last scholarship. Probably not, since his game seems quite similar to that of Van der Heijden.

Going back in time to May of this year:

- Seymour , Sloan 6-8 SF/PF (NY) BUCKNELL OFFER Jul-2017 ; Reclassified to 2019; St. Johns, URI, Rutgers, St. Joes, South Florida, UMass, Siena, Iona, Vermont, Hofstra, Marist, etc.

With the strong offer list he had, it definitely made me wonder why he would choose to reclassify. Makes sense now

This past May there were many questions about Seymour's early high-level offers followed by him not committing and then reclassifying, followed by a last minute decision to go to Siena instead. And also speculation about whether he could have been a decent March pickup by the Bison, so I decided to see how he's been doing. Siena is in full rebuild mode and he has started each game. However his stats are amazing, and I don't mean that in a good way.

- He is a 6-9 PF/SF who has attempted 89 threes and only 7 twos. I don't recall ever seeing that kind of ratio from a big man before. And only very rarely from a SG. Even Bryson Johnson took 1/3 of his shots from inside the arc.
- Seymour is shooting 32.5% on the threes, but only because he had a hot start of the season. He went 11-24 in the first three games, and has been 18-65 (27.7%) since then. Despite the mediocre shooting, he is averaging nine attempted threes per game.
- Despite being 6-9, he has only shot 2 FT's the entire season.
- He is a 6-9 PF who gets less rebounds than the smallest guards. Has 11 rebounds in 11 games/268 minutes. That's 1.0 rpg for a regular starting PF.
- He has 1 steal for the season and 1 block.
- He also has but 3 assists for the season. To his credit, he only has 5 turnovers, but it appears that he isn't at all involved in the offense except to stand beyond the 3-point line and shoot if he gets the ball.
- He also has only 9 fouls in 11 games as a starter. From what I hear, that extraordinarily low number is largely a function of him not staying close enough to his man to foul.
- His minutes have fallen significantly the past three games. Despite Siena having few options, it's hard to believe they can keep starting him with those numbers.

Looking at the above, it's very unlikely he would have seen any playing time this year. And I think both Rhodes and van der Heijden would play ahead of him next year.

I was a big Bryson fan but don't think that he took 33% of his total shots from inside the arc.

My memory, which could be off, recalls 80 to 85% of Bryson's FG's from long distance....He should have earned a nickname like the Bison Bomber or something like that!!

Yes, you are definitely correct for his career. I apparently was thinking of his senior year, when he took 88 twos and 184 threes - or 32.4% twos vs 67.6% threes. His pct of threes was much higher in the earlier years, as you remember.
