I can’t understand why so,few of the so-called experts are ignoring Smith in the pre-season all Ivy polls and projections.

I don't think the rest of the team is up to his level, but we'll now see how good a recruiter you have in Engles. CU lost its 2 best forwards and the shooting of the returnees is not very good. I'm a believer in improvement, but it won't be easy to crash the top 4. Smith though scares me. |

I think the reason is that there are three teams that are likely to be better than Columbia this year, and so those teams get 3-4 of the all-Ivy predictions. That leaves Smith in the hopper for 1-2 spots with Broudeaux, Morgan, Brodeur, etc. Plus additional guys at Princeton, Harvard, and Yale. Doesn't mean the prognosticators are right of course. But I do think a playoff appearance drastically increases Smith's odds. |

I know he was playing the 6th ranked team in the country, and he wasn't getting a lot of help from the players around him, but is anyone else concerned about Smith taking 21 shots? That's over four times the FGA as the next highest starter took. Should he be calling his own number that often? Won't his teammates eventually stand around watching him dribble as the shot clock runs down? |

With Hickman and Meisner disappearing, it will be up to Castlin and some of the new guys to more aggressively look to make things happen. It is hard to fault Smith and obviously Engles knows this, or else he would not have kept him on the floor for 35 minutes. In any event, Smith showed that he can play with the big boys. Tremendous ball skills and speed. And his shot will start falling at a higher percentage.

Agree with Murph, but think pin pointing high FGA is putting the cart before the horse. The sole problem is teammates not stepping up as much as they should. Castlin in particular has the experience and talent to shoulder a bigger burden. As tape and faulds get more experience, hopefully their offensive confidence will grow as well. Very easy to defend a lone 5-11 guard even if he is explosive. If others step up, we will automatically see his FGA go down and his assists and FG% go up. We will be a much stronger team. |

Obviously the ability to get your shot is a huge part of being a good basketball player, so I don't want to be overly critical here. However, the rest of the team shot very close to 50% for the game. So one could make a statistical argument that, rather than nobody else doing anything, Smith kind of shot Columbia out of the game. Of course , it is a very small sample size. Smith hits one more 3 and one more 2, and the whole thing looks very different statistically. So it is way early to make conclusions. |

The first game with FYs playing a lot vs. a top team says very little about anything.

Mike Smith outplayed his counterpart, who is a pre-season All-America. Any criticism of Smith is nonsense. |

How exactly did he outplay his counterpart? Brunson had a 115 ORAT for that game (in other words, well above average). Smith had an 85 (way below). I think you are looking at scoring a lot of points instead of looking at what actually wins basketball games. Again, statistically it looks like Columbia was better off in the possessions where Smith did not shoot it. |
