Tigers 2 1/2 pt underdog. Hagan is a tough place to play and Tigers had trouble shooting 2 years ago -- rims and lighting plus Martelli's teams tend to be tough and very athletic. Hawks destroyed Tigers on the boards last year at Jadwin -- low point of the season. This year's team had a strong preseason ranking and Martelli was very optimistic, unusual for him, preseason. Hawks suffered two bad injuries to two of their four best players game #1. Best player is Demery, a 6'5" Myles Stephens type player and Newkirk, SG, who is coming off a ACL injury after averaging 20 pts a game last year. Biggest surprise is 6'9" freshmen 3 pt shooter (8 in 2 games). With all that said, Tigers have a good shot to win based on match ups. Question is do they bounce back from BYU game. Game is now on A-10 TV. Opportunity for Harvard and Tigers today to get 2 wins against good, not great teams, on the road. Are they up to the challenge? Let's hope. |

Tigers with early 5 point lead on a drive and dish out for 3, unfortunately the exception to another night of four guys standing still while one drives into traffic. D looks solid though, which is ultimately more important at this stage of the season. |

Beautiful passing by Tigers gets DC open for 3 in the corner for the lead with 15 seconds in the half. Devin has 27 points. |

Eerie similarity to beginning of last year. Long scoring droughts. Trouble with turnovers and periodic defensive lapses but some occasional flashes of brilliance. Jury is still out. |

Can't get a defensive stop when they need it. Offense sputters with no clearcut playmaker. Seems to be a rotating job. |

More of the same. Hang around for a while but choke in the end. This St. Joe's team was very beatable, especially with their multiple injuries. Guys are just afraid of the names on the jerseys. Any "known" program has them shook. If they can't win the next two easily, then they might as well call it a season. |

Tigers drop a tough one by 13. Hawk's Taylor Funk is quite a player. Some nice moments but the long scoring droughts were killer. Game went from up 3 to down 12 in a blink of an eye when shots stopped falling. We're going to need at least one more player to step up as we can't depend on the big 3 to carry the team. Cannady was on fire in first half but it looked like he tired a little in 2nd. I expect to see more of Aaron Young in the next few games, even though that makes for a small team. |

Getting will gladson back will be huge. We aren't playing through the top of the key like we have in years past. Looking forward to his return. |

There was one big drought - Stephens hits a layup to go up 3 with 11:17 to go in the 2nd putting the Tigers up 3. For the next 6 minutes plus St Joes goes on a 17-4 run going up 10 with 4 minutes to go. Princeton possessions were interesting. LeBlanc missed 3, LeBlanc missed 3, Stephens made 2 Bell TO, Bell missed 3, Young missed layup, Young missed 3, Young missed 3, Stephens makes 2, Cannady misses 3. St Joes makes 1-2 at the line to go up 10 with 4:52. 2-9 shooting during the critical stretch, with 5 shots from Young and LeBlanc. It seemed that St Joes was covering 3 with 5, freely doubling off of LeBlanc and Young daring them to make shots. Or it could have been fatigue with the big 3.Bottom line is we need threats out of the non big three - a lot if these were open shots - whether its Gladson, or the freshmen someone needs to hit an open shot. |

Gladson's return should help. I also thing that Barnes can make a difference, once he gets healthy and starts to play. I saw him play a few times in H.S. He could help on the boards and underneath with defense and shot blocking. |

Funk, a freshmen, has now performed remarkably well over the past 3 games. Tigers freshmen are not major contributors yet although only 3 games into the season. Fortunately, Lafayette is around the corner. Sad weekend for the Ivies although at least Harvard showed some heart in the second half. Not a pretty picture and certainly not pretty basketball but it is still very early. |

BYU lost it's home opener last night to Texas-Arlington by 14. Couldn't defend anything. |

Obvious difference from last year's team is that the Tigers had five guys who could score on the floor on any given night when they went small versus this year's team having 3 players who can consistently score. Not all five players would click on a given night but the 2016-17 team had more options. This year, other teams can focus on shutting down the big 3 especially towards the end of the game. The question is can another player set up consistently as the year goes on -- very questionable. Other obvious difference in not having seniors Weisz and Cook on the floor at crunch time. Yale probably had the one team that could have put 5 players on the court prior to injuries to Mason and Bruner. Long way to go but Coach has challenges in front of him. |

The Tigers had offensive cold stretches last year, too, even during the winning streak and against Notre Dame. When you take that many threes, it's inevitable. And according to Noah Savage's account, the ball was moving for PU and they got a lot of good looks against the Hawks, but missed a lot of layups and in-rhythm threes (and didn't get fouled much). So the stagnation and three-on-five offense from earlier games seems not to have been that much of a problem. Just need shots to go in from Brennan or Young or LeBlanc or Much or Schweiger. We have good reason to think that these are players who can hit open shots; perhaps Bell's early struggles and later shooting revival last season can give hope. What needs to be fixed is the defense. Opponents are getting to the rim, finishing, or getting fouled way too easily and opponents are getting a lot of looks from three. Almost no turnovers are being forced (which also takes away a few easy transition buckets per game) and teams look pretty comfortable running their stuff. Perhaps it's just growing pains from integrating new guys into the lineup, especially given all the switching and doubling and help-and-recover stuff the Tigers do according to scouting report and situation, but opponents are getting good looks for their good shooters and scorers. |

Agree with SRP. The offense might be fragile, because it puts so much pressure on Stephens/Cannady/Bell to be on every night -- but they've mostly been up to the task so far. It'll look good when the role players actually make shots (which should happen eventually). But the defense hasn't been anywhere near good enough. BYU was encouraging but this weekend was a big step backward. Gladson would help some as a safety net but really the wings just have to be better. |
