Can we pretend this game never happened?

Agreed. This was, arguably, the worst loss since Coach Earl took over.

The game was a similar back and forth affair, like last year, for the first 12 minutes, then UMass-Lowell slowly took charge with a 10 point lead at halftime. The Big Red never made a run in the second half as the Riverhawks extended the lead to 20 and coasted to a 98-78 win.

Morgan and Gettings did well, offensively, scoring 25 and 13 respectively. Morgan was 9-18 and Gettings was 5-6.

Without intense defensive pressure, Cornell gave up 22 turnovers, 5 each from Bathurst and Warren. UMass-Lowell scored 30 points off these turnovers. They also allowed 52 points in the paint, 15 offensive rebounds and 25 second chance points.

After 4 games, they are scoring almost 70 points a game, but giving up almost 83. Their opponents are shooting 40% from three and 46% overall. They are - 21 in turnovers and - 17 in steals. In 1st half points, they are only -8, but in the 2nd half they are - 45.

Morgan is putting up his usual numbers (which earned his this week's Ivy Player of the Week) and Gettings appears to getting stronger, although his assists appear to be down from last year. Hopefully, that will change once he moves into the starting role. Otherwise, no one else is putting up good numbers on a consistent basis.

The first years, including Julian, have not distinguished themselves, and Warren does not appear to have made growth in his second season. This season's team does not appear to remotely resemble its coach. With so many players remaining from the Courtney era, maybe it will take several years of recruits for Coach Earl to make a team in his image. In the meantime, it is more than frustrating to watch a team that was projected to be better than this.

At least Morgan still has two season left, unless he goes the graduate transfer route.

The loss at Penn last year was pretty bad -- I think the Quakers were at 100% win expectancy by halftime -- but you may be right.

The offense should be okay. They share the ball and get to the line. Morgan is an elite scorer and Gettings is solid. The turnover issue at UML (which were, as you said, largely unforced) hasn't been a problem in the Earl era, so maybe that was just a one-off. Get Whiteside back and Cornell's best offense since 2011 is possible.

The defense, however, looks awful. Syracuse and especially Colgate shot the ball very poorly, but I can't attribute that to anything the Big Red did. Teams get the hoop far too easily and the scheme generates no turnovers. Julian helps a little on boards (I'm higher on him than you seem to be), but this looks like an issue. Again.

As for the Freshmen, McBride looks like a potential mainstay of the rotation, though I don't know what his ceiling is. Boeheim isn't ready to defend or rebound at this level and, based on his decreasing minutes, it looks like Earl has figured this out. Voss, Kuhn, and Knapp haven't played enough to really know what they bring to the table.

Morgan is worth the price of admission most nights, but more wins would be nice.
