Following the pattern of recent games, the Columbia Lions have sprinted to a first half lead due primarily to Mike Smith's outstanding play. However, what may set this game apart is that the Lions surprised their opponent in the final six minutes or so of the half by replacing their usual starting front court players with two freshman, one of whom was playing for the very first time this season. The two freshmen, Myles Hanson and Randy Brumant, played very well, Hanson on offense and Brumant on defense. Hanson hit two threes and Brumant neutralized Stony Brook's big man. So, after all Columbia Fans we have reason to hope as the second half begins........ |

Ouch! Engles does a "Joe Jones" to start the second half, benching the hot players and Stony Brook goes on an 8-0 run at the start of the second half. |

This team is hard to watch. How we consistently blow big leads in the second half time after time is to me a coaching failure. Other teams make half time adjustments and outplay us. We follow the same miserable pattern of falling apart in the second half,at some point you have to say it is the coaching. |

76-66 Stony Brook. We were awful in the second half. The frustrating thing is that we are so streaky, playing well and badly in rapid succession. But we are now 1-8, and have to at some point accept that we are our record. |

Mike smith is a good 3pt shooter, but has extremely low 2pt efficiency. He should take the bare minimum number of 2pt attempts to keep the opposition honest. Apart from that he had a great game today with 8 assists and 1 TO. Meisner and tape need to learn how to defend big men without fouling, SB's big men torched us today. Finally Hickman is our most inefficient player, significantly detiorated from the flashes of brilliance we saw early last season. Engles needs to open his eyes and smell the coffee, he's adapting too slowly. If we play Hickman more than 10min/game we are guaranteed to lose. Instead we should play younger players who might not be significantly better right now, but have more time and potential upside. I hate to put any player down after a game, and I don't blame Hickman, but I'm unhappy with engles' personnel selections, the evidence is overwhelming. |

Hickman again missed two key FTs in the closing minutes. Same thing two games in a row. He had had plenty of chances and has played his way out of the starting lineup. |

Lions are becoming pretty consistent - with another 2nd half meltdown. They led after the first half by 10, and lost the 2nd half by 20. After halftime, SB went to its strengths and exposed CU’s weaknesses. SB pointguard and power forward continually beat their men. Latter scored 30. CU offense was shut down for long stretches. Lions are a work in progress; they can still become a winning team if they improve on fundamental skills - better foulshooting, and reduced turnovers and silly fouls. |

Hard to criticize Engels' rotation with the early foul trouble the Lions had. Biggest issue was Meisner being limited to 20 minutes. Faulds had 3 fouls in 9 minutes and Tape fouled out, as well. Lions aren't deep enough to have their three big men off the court and having to avoid fouls when on the court. Engels was operating within co straints, not entirely by choice. |
