From Eric Bossi at rivals.com: Also ticketed to play in the Ivy League, at Penn, Wang is a skilled big man who can shoot and has gotten much tougher. It's easy to see him as a five man who spreads the floor and creates space for drivers and cutters with his shooting and passing. Penn also had an assistant there. |

Mater Dei's 7'3" center transferred out so MW will need to play more in the post this year than in prior years. |

No one's going crazy. But he may be another nice piece. Not sure the Jeff Foote comps are all that meaningful either. |

I'm sure he shoots it better than I did when I first got on campus. Coach Duke used to say "you could lock Steve alone in the gym with the ball, come back the next morning and he still wouldn't have scored." Jan could shoot the ball though. There were definitely some times during both preseasons we shared that we thought he was going to break out. Never quite showed it all in games (though, he hit some big ones in that Princeton comeback). But there were days in practice when he was the best big on the court. |

Yes, I don't really get that. Foote didn't exactly light it up from outside. |

More from Rivals on Wednesday games: And Freedman is the Rivals150 senior referred to below. Alongside the Rivals150 senior is Michael Wang , a multi-dimensional power forward that can shoot, dribble and rebound. A polished half-court weapon that didn’t miss a shot during his team’s 44-point first half outburst, Wang should thrive within the Ivy League. Imagining the Mater Dei product alongside all-league member AJ Brodeur should only bolster the Penn’s chances of moving up within the conference’s pecking order under Steve Donahue’s watch. |

13-15 from the floor and 28 points in Mater Dei's double OT loss. !3-15 included 3-5 from the 3 point line. "Michael Wang, PF, Mater Dei – Headed to Penn next year, Wang looks like a potential impact player in the Ivy League. He was an extremely efficient 12-15 from the floor and finished with 28 points and four assists. Wang has a good shooting stroke and is getting better attacking with the dribble. With his ability to stretch the floor he should be a tough matchup for most Ivy League bigs. |

I try to provide context everywhere I can. From a prioritization perspective, the prizes in the Ivy this year were Jaelin, Freedman and Noah. A full step beyond that would be guys like Taurus Samuels and Mason Forbes. Then, there are a bunch that are all - depends on who you talk to, mostly positive to mostly negative, but all guys that are expected to have an impact in the rotation at some point in their Ivy careers. Wang is somewhere in that group. |

While there may be better 'prizes' in this recruiting class, Wang fits Penn's system and fills an immediate need. So there's that. |

I am pretty sure there is a long list of IL recruits in his class that were considered to have an impact in the league long before he would have had and right now he has to be considered in a pretty exclusive group in a very strong class. I realize this is just one example and I don't put a lot of value in my own cherry picking I do recognize the value of a recruit that fits into a program and coaches that recognize that fit early. I think Mike Wang was a pretty high priority for the Penn Coaches from the beginning and they are quite pleased with his commitment. I don't know if he will be a star in year 1 but to say he was anything other than a top target for Penn would be inaccurate. |

To put in perspective - of the players getting major minutes this year for Penn, Brodeur is probably the only one who was a more regarded recruit than Wang. That's not to say I won't be thrilled when Donahue starts landing more highly regarded recruits. |

That's right. If I were to put this into perspective, you should be about as excited about Michael Wang as you are about, say, Jarrod Simmons. This feels a lot like the Jaron Faulds argument from last year. Saying someone isn't likely to be an instant star (what I think of when I think of a true "4 or 5-star" recruit) doesn't mean they're garbage. There's a ton of room in between. And as others have said - there are fit issues as well, certain pieces are better used by some teams in their offensive schemes (and hidden by their defensive schemes) than others. But right now, this is looking like a lost class for Penn, which puts a LOT of pressure on 2019. |

Speaking of which, are you (or anyone, for that matter) aware of anything cooking out there, or is it way too early? mrjames, earlier in the season you said that there were still a lot of unsigned Ivy candidates and that we should be patient. It sounds like you think that these candidates won't be coming to Penn? Disappointing recruiting year if so. I agree with your point. A class of 1 player isn't a good one unless that player is a sure thing. There is too much variability in the second tier of good recruits ultimately having an impact. |

Saw a few clips of Wang on Twitter from the Palms tournament (one of biggest high school tournaments annually with very high level competition), and was surprised to see some nice post moves. 6'10" and he can hit threes and throw in some post moves against good competition - sounds good to me. Seems like his biggest challenge will be defending, but time will tell and either way looking forward to seeing him in Penn uni. For what it's worth it seems like he is stepping up senior season now that Bol Bol left. |

Wang has led Mater Dei to the finals of a big high school tournament, the LS Invitational in Oregon. They will play #2 Oak Hill tomorrow night for the championship. Spencer Freedman (and 2 other kids) missed yesterday's game so Wang had to take an even bigger burden and seemingly did very well. He scored 30 points on 11-22 shooting, 1-3 on 3s, 7-9 FTs, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 0 turnovers. He scored 30 of his teams 71 points in the win to get MD to semi-finals today. Today he scored 24 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in MDs win over #22 Jefferson from Oregon in a 54-49 win. |

Yes, same here as he seems to be having a good senior year. At this point I am most encouraged that he is scoring in a lot of ways besides just 3 pointers. |

It seems like he would be the perfect complement to last year's Brodeur. A forward who spaces well, has height, and can shoot. I'm not sure if it's as good of a complement for what Donahue is asking Brodeur to do this year. |

If Mr. Wang is as good as we hope, I’m confident Mr. Donahue will figure out how to use him in combination w. Mr. Brodeur. |
