Saturday's home game with Cornell is a MUST WIN for Columbia Basketball. Go Lions!

Yes it is. If we lose Saturday, the season will instantly plummet from a disappointment to a disaster, where our most likely IL record is capped at a maximum of 4 wins.

KenPom has us winning by 5. Penn and Princeton away might be a stretch. For this Saturday, however, there are no excuses.

Game notes are up. Despite all of the most earnest beseeching from this board, the starting lineup remains unchanged.

Maybe as a non-Columbia guy it is easier to see it as important, but not a must win.

To me, Columbia could conceivably beat everyone but Princeton at home. And they will have a shot on the road against Brown, Cornell, and Dartmouth. Going 4-2 against those 3 could give Columbia a shot at 4th. And they could go 4-2 in those games while losing at home to Cornell. So I don't see it as the end of the world if Columbia loses this one.

SG, you are either insufficiently anxious about Columbia's prospects, or too kind. Although the scenario you cite is possible, the chances of it happening just about evaporate if we lose this weekend. If we lose to Cornell at home, it would require a reversal of last season's Penn-size proportions to win so many games away.

Lions 88-62; threes by many (especially Adlesh, Meisner, Hickman who played his best games in memory). Smith didn't score in double figures after more than 20+ straight games.

Good D, overall.

Stunning victory. Columbia did everything right. Maybe we have turned the corner. Congratulations to the Lions!

Our best game. Our ORAT was 1.22, while keeping Cornell to .86. Lots of passion, aka hustle on defense. We won going away, which may not be unrelated to the end of Smith's string of double-figured games.

The noteworthy performances include 19 from Meisner, a breakout 14 from Hickman, Adlesh with 14, Stefanini playing the point in Smith's absence with 11, and the welcome sight of an aggressive Castlin with 10. It's Cornell at home, so there is no way to predict the carry-over, but we certainly looked as if the players who were supposed to contribute this season are beginning to live up to their potential.

A lot of guys played well and shot well, as they have earlier in the season. Difference was they put two halves together. Now they need some game to game consistency. Interesting that Harvard wasn't able to blow Dartmouth out.

Great win. Are Faulds and Bibbs injured?

Yes, except for Princeton at the top and Dartmouth and Cornell at the bottom, the league feels pretty open. Brown's rising, Yale and Harvard are clinging with injuries to the top 4, while Penn is competitive, but despite their home victory, not as good as Princeton. In this scenario, Columbia probably falls somewhere between 6th and 4th in the league.

No, Engles went small, so Faulds didn't play until the end, when Bibbs, who no longer has the cushioned shoe on his foot, also got some garbage minutes.

But even if Engles went small, if Faulds is a building block going forward why relegate him to garbage time?

I don't have a problem with Engles playing Faulds fewer minute, and playing Hanson and Hunter more minutes at the 4. Clearly, Engles is making an effort to put a smaller, faster, more athletic line-up on the floor, at times.

It certainly paid off last night. Columbia practically ran Cornell out of the gym last night. Although I don't suppose we can count on shooting 57% from the 3 point line every game.

Well, I think Cornell is a lousy matchup for Faulds. Gettings is more dangerous on those 3s than Brodeur is, and Faulds got torched there. Could he have played more minutes when Warren was on the floor? I guess. But I think what you saw was a game that they viewed as a must win, gain some confidence, and make a statement kind of game. They weren't messing with extended garbage time when the main rotation hasn't held leads all year. I think they wanted them out there keeping the foot on the accelerator, which seems to me to be the right decision in this one. I think that pays more dividends, at least this year, than giving Faulds another 5 minutes.

SG: and you intuited the win. Now, we just need the rest of your scenario to come true...

I hope Smith didn't get a concussion on that play. He was holding the back of his head.

Cornell is also particularly bad at defending pick-and-rolls and other screen-like action on the perimeter, which isn't Faulds' strength.

Good defense = easy offense. The defense lead to easy offense and good looks.

Yes, but the number of fouls we committed could be a major concern going forward. We allowed Cornell to shot 28 foul shots to eight of our own. Fortunately, Cornell went only 13-28 from the foul line whereas we were a perfect 8-8. We need to reduce that disparity in Cornell #2.
