Mighty quiet around here with Dartmouth playing host to Harvard Saturday night. The Crimson won the first meeting down in Cambridge, 61-51, although it was just a three-point game with four minutes left. What's the feel for this one?

Dartmouth will be honoring Dave Faucher, a Paul Cormier assistant from the Jim Barton/Walter Palmer days who went on to spend 13 years as head coach. His teams went 16-10 and 18-8 in the middle of his run, but he managed just one other winning season before being let go after the '03-04 season.

This midseason report from Harvard might get you thinking the Amaker bloom is off the Crimson rose. https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2018/01/basketball...

Kenpom has Harvard winning by 3.

It would seem that Dartmouth would have to do much better than the 5-19 from three that they had 2 weeks ago. They will hopefully shoot similar numbers than they did in their last 2 games (9-23 against BC and 11-20 against Vermont).

Miles Wright had 23 and was the only player in double digits at Harvard, so it would seem that they would be helped by having more offensive output from Barry (7 points), Johnson (7 points) and Knight (2 points). Of course, it is easier said than done when going up against Harvard's strong defense.

Dartmouth will need to have a better showing on defense. They are in the low 320s in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency, give up a high percentage from three and a really high percentage from two.

Against Harvard, they gave up 48% from three (12-25!), but only 40% from two (10-25). Against Vermont and BC, they allowed 19-47 combined from three in the last two games (40%).

Looks like a lot of things have to go right for a Big Green win. However, they did have a 3 point lead with 6 minutes to go last time. If they can keep it close tomorrow night, we'll see if they learned anything in two weeks.

I agree that the 3 point shooting is key. That's what has kept them in the games in which they were competitive. They were 15/32 from 3 in the Notre Dame game. Hopefully as you point out, the defense is better in paint and perimeter. I think we have a chance tonight. Hope the crowd is louder. No hockey tonight.

The Dartmouth administration raised admissions levels after the 1996 season without giving the athletic teams any additional help elsewhere. Both football and men's basketball went into an immediate nosedive, and both coaches (Faucher, Lyons) were eventually let go when they proved that they couldn't work miracles.

Men's basketball never really recovered...

...never really recovered from the 36 previous years of not winning Ivy championships? I wouldn't put this entirely on the shoulders of the mid-90s admissions office...

Was anyone at the game? Did they just hound Miles Wright, or was he being his usual streaky self, or was there some other apparent reason that he went from scorching Harvard in the first game to being held scoreless in tonight's re-match?

I was at the game and Harvard did a good job on defense but I feel that the ball movement was not good. Not many open 3's. A lot of missed layups including a couple at the end of the game that could've won the game. Overall, I thought s decent effort for a young team. Down nearly 20 points and they came back to force OT. Fans get an A+, helped in the last few minutes.

Dartmouth men's basketball was generally competitive in the 1980s and early to mid 1990s. No championships, but we finished in the upper division quite a bit in that era.

I watched the last 10 minutes and OT on TV.

We shot well during that span, and Harvard went ice cold. We actually took the lead, and there was a loose ball with 5 seconds to go. A Dartmouth defender had his hands on it, but instead of just corralling it like a fumble he tried to pass it. Unfortunately, a Harvard player intercepted it, passed it to a wide open Towns, who was then fouled. He made both, and Harvard outplayed us in OT.

I grew up with those teams—they were entertaining and competitive. I'm just stating the fact that they never quite got over the hump to the promised land, though I believe they were within a missed James Blackwell free throw or two in 1990-91 or so.

There were years in that era when we had the best starting five in the league. But just didn't have the quality depth necessary to beat the Ps.

Wright is a 4 year mostly off and rarely on player. Look at his yearly averages. Then look at his individual games. Mostly off. Way more no shows than you think. Personally I think hes the worst kind of player you can have on a team. You cannot count on him for anything. Zero consistency. Against Harvard 0-6 from the field. 0-3 from three. 2 rebs, 1 asst, 1 TO, 1 block. 39 mins played!! Look at our captains, our "leaders". Both no shows. Nice comeback, but we're still not winning. Depressing. Mclaughlin takes Knight out at end of the game when he was the only thing that was working. Ugh. Go Big Green....

So who should get Wright's minutes? Knight doesn't play guard...

Some credit has to go to Justin Bassey here. This isn’t the first scoring guard that he’s shut down in his career. He’s a great on-ball perimeter defender.

Mclaughlin hasn't recruited Wrights replacement. That's on him. We don't have a true wing (including Wright). Which is pretty amazing when you think about it. Who exactly did Mclaughlin plan to play the 3 next year? Wright's defense is generally atrocious, and he's a spotty performer on offense. You would think that Mclaughlin would look to have at least 2 true wings behind Wright working into the lineup and preparing for future years. Nope. We don't even have one. So unless Sistare suddenly sprouts foot quickness, defensive abilities, and jumping ability, Wright it is. But my issue is he's a captain. Don't you have some expectation of on court performance from your "leaders"? I did when I played and I expect most athletes do. How he can play 39 mins and have that abysmal performance is beyond me. Going to be a long few years ahead of us.....
