I can understand that we were fatigued against Lehigh having played 4 games in 8 days. No excuse for this game having had a week off and playing at home. Colgate's playing well but we should win this game. We're the better team and have to play with heart as well as ability!

A win tonight would basically put our magic # at 1 to clinch the regular season. Colgate would have to win out and we would have to lose out for them to catch us. I supposed there could be a crazy scenario where we go 1-3 and Colgate wins out, but Navy or BU also wins out to cause some 3 way tiebreakers that could keep us out...Still, win tonight, and one goal should likely be achieved.

A loss, and we would be at real risk of losing the top seed especially if we lose to Navy next week, as our records against Navy and BU could become the tiebreaker with Colgate (as we will have split with Gate). Gate already swept Navy.

At 18-22 years old, I remember playing hoops 2-3 hours a day (or more) just about every day. I don't buy the fatigue thing.

Yes, that would be disastrous. But in most likely tie scenarios, Colgate would prevail. Other than the loss to Bucknell, their losses are both to Lafayette. The Bison, in the tie scenario, would have a loss to Lehigh and a loss to some unknown future opponent. If LU ends up ahead of Lafayette, then that would give Colgate the tiebreaker no matter who the other theoretical Bison loss was to.

Fatigue at that age is a joke unless you’re a win-in for a major conference tourney and play four games in four days.

This team can get lazy sometimes and frankly I think superior talent and expectation of winning factor in to that. I have no worries that when the time comes they’ll answer the Bell. The bell is ringing tonight too.

Layup drill for Colgate...we look lost and out of sorts all over the court. Of course many here feel it is the fault of the officials.

This team likes to see how far behind they can get then they pour it on and win by two or four, or lose like they did at Lehigh. Look for a slow crawl back into the game and then a strong finish. It wouldn't be the first time.

My comment regarding officials wasn’t sarcasm...I get that we’ve seen some poor officiating in the PL, but the people around me at the games always blame officiating when we are not doing well when the real reason is poor play. But that is negativity, sorry.

It’s clear now there’s nothing “special” about this unit from a national perspective. Sadly it’s true based upon the body of work.

We can breakdown why this is the case but it’s clear this incarnation of the Bison is not going to live up to the hype WE created (including myself).

Ok I missed the first half, watched the second half. Obviously the first 30 minutes was sad. Is it a week layoff problem or the inconsistency? Regardless you have to give great credit for the comeback and obviously kimbal for being the clutch shooter he is. Great win...basically gives us the number 1 seed.

But I have to be honest. I don’t know what to expect from this team. If this team makes the tourney as a 13 seed and wins a game I won’t be surprised because they’re capable. If they lose in the PL playoffs I also won’t be surprised. I don’t know what to say about the team. I’m pumped for the win but there is a nagging feeling about this team that makes me uneasy.

For all you haters out there - never write this team off. Did they play poorly - certainly! But they never gave up. I'm happy for the win no matter how they got there. And to any of you who walked out with 2 minutes to play - it's your loss.

Truly unbelievable ! I hope the team knows how lucky they were tonight to pull this one out, and that it will help them prepare for the PL tourney. Manic number down to 1 with 4 games left for the #1 seed.

I also know that this was not Colgate’s best game either. The stats bear that out, as overall shooting was basically the same for both squads. Colgate slight advantage on 3 pt. shooting, and Bison advantage on foul shots made (but not %wise). Had we played any other team we recently have played, we would have really taken it on the chin - let’s hope the team realizes the need to improve as we near the tourney. I still think the long layover since the Lehigh game hurt us. Let us hope a now short 2 day turnaround to the Loyola game at Sojka won’t have a similar result. But I think this game will prove to be a real learning experience for the team.

Again, congrats to the Bison for an inspiring comeback win. Onward to a #1 seed - GO BISON

Thanks! Gotta love this from Colgate's write-up: "A controversial flagrant foul call put the Bison at the line..."

It was CLEARLY the correct call under the rules.

Just watched the same. Impressively long dialogue and analysis on the game. I thought our friends in purple said nobody cares about the Patriot League.

Although to be fair Monday is the night to get attention since it is a quiet sports night.

Sports Center coming on ESPN as soon as OT ends. Just did a promo teasing that you have to see the game of the night between Bucknell and Colgate.

Grew up in the Lewisburg area, dad was a Bucknell alum. I'm a Lehigh alum in Allentown. At least once a year I like to come up and enjoy a game at your wonderful facility. Tonight was the night. Refs let Colgate turn this into a rugby scrum at times. Bison seemed completely out of sync offensively. First half was just ugly basketball. Second half not much better. Down 8 with 32 seconds, I left (with half the crowd) to begin my 2 hours back to the Lehigh Valley. What a stinker. But dinner in town, your fans, and the atmosphere made the trip worth it again.

Then Sports Center came on when I got home.
Unbelievable! Congratulations on your Houdini escape and apparent league championship. And what a dope I was to leave early.

Yes, the team definitely needs to play better and with a much greater sense of urgency in the first half of games. I wouldn't agree, however, that the Bison would have lost to other league teams tonight. Colgate is the league's most experienced team, along with Bucknell, and is the PL's clear #2. They have the league's second best record, and going into tonight's game had won six of their previous seven games, including road wins over Lehigh, Army, and Navy plus home wins over Boston U, Loyola, and American. Not only are they in second place in the PL standings but they also are ranked #2 in Pomeroy's rankings.

Not sure I'd fully agree with that. They let Nana get fouled repeatedly in the lane whenever he got an entry pass.

The Colgate guards love to flop and throw their heads back with littlest of contact. I thought they baited the refs into calling a few fouls but I guess that's smart on their part if it works. It's just annoying to watch.

The flagrant foul was obviously huge and what put the Bison in position to ultimately hit the winning shot. Bad play by Colgate and fortunate for Bucknell. Also huge for Nana to hit a free throw (an area he was extremely proficient in last night.)

Must have watched that final sequence a dozen times and still can't believe we scored 9 points in 21 seconds. The flagrant foul was huge - really bonehead play by Rayman who was impressive otherwise. As 137 pointed out, they were pushing Nana in the back all game long but only got called on it twice. Bruce Moore played one of his better games.

I did not know the score and watched the game late last night on DVR. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I was very tempted to go to bed early, but my phone was blowing up with text messages that I did not want to read. So, I figured that something good must have happened. It wasn't a pretty game, but the ending was definitely memorable.

BTW, can this team please start a game ready to play from the tip-off???

Highlights from the entire game from the BucknellBison website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNIIK_RbHfg

One little thing that is very noticeable is when Zach Thomas scores after grabbing his own blocked shot (about 2:45 on video), he gets clubbed over the head in the midst of shooting - with no call. Zach gets to the line a lot - but there are a number of other obvious fouls that aren't called. It sometimes seems like the refs don't want to send him to the line too much regardless of how many fouls he draws.

Reminded me of another February night, in 2005, when Chris Niesz hit a shot at the buzzer to beat (you guessed it) - Colgate. That Bucknell team was in a funk, having lost 4 of their previous 8 Patriot League games. They rode some of the energy of that Colgate win to - well, you know... Maybe it bodes well for this Bison team.

It's hard to see everything on that critical turnover we forced on Colgate's late inbound play. Watching on TV, I was thinking Stephen Brown may have hip-checked him out of bounds, and listening to Doug highlights, he thought there may have been a foul, too. Then again, with the press table obscuring things, maybe the Colgate player stepped out of bounds first, or the ball hit out of bounds first.

One thing about that Niesz three at the buzzer is that if the Bison had lost, they would almost certainly have ended up as a 15 seed - and not played Kansas in the first round. Those who watched that Colgate game will likely remember that moments before Niesz's winning shot, Colgate missed the front end of a one-and-one that would have basically clinched the game.

Very hard to tell, although looking at the video it doesn't seem nearly as obvious a foul as it appeared from the bench side of Sojka. As you know, in the final seconds a foul usually has to be a little more obvious in situations like that.

Another interesting note about foul calls in that game. At some point in the TV broadcast they pointed out that a national supervisor of officials was in the crowd at sojka last night. Perhaps that put extra and necessary pressure on the refs to get the calls right.

Kimbal is tough as nails and has ice in his veins. We would have done better in the OOC games with him. Our great Flannery teams struggled and lost to teams we all thought we should beat too. We are spoiled by success on this Board. I would not have jumped off the bandwagon even had we lost. And that having been said, yes we could get upset in the tourney. Teams switching up defenses on us seems to be causing problems. But better to sort through that now and adjust...

Yes, Kimbal being back and getting into game shape provides another major weapon. That being said, concerned that over the past few games Bison reacting poorly to competitive strategies each team is repeating - double team under basket, changing defenses, etc. Most Bison have seen these tactics for 3-4 years yet reacting like they haven't been practicing them. Hoping playoffs a different story.

Agree the Bison are not adapting well to certain defensive schemes. That particularly goes for the double-teaming of Nana - but the biggest culprit there is the outside shooting. Since the first Boston U game, Nana has been double-teamed virtually every time he touches the ball. Last year he probably averaged 7-8 jump hooks vs single coverage in PL games. This year, excluding the American game, he is lucky if he gets 1-2 a game vs single coverage where he is able to extend his shooting arm back freely. That is the main reason his shooting pct this year in PL games is 57.7% compared to 63.0% last year. And in OOC games - against much better teams and much better centers - he hit 61.1% of his shots, because teams rarely doubled him in those games.

Thankfully he has become a much better passer and frequently gets the ball out to the right guy. And his turnover rate has declined. So that part of the adaptation is pretty good. However in league games, the Bison are not making a high enough pct of the open threes that result from the double teams to discourage teams from doing it every time. In PL games, the team is hitting a poor 31.8% on threes, with only Brown and Toomer hitting above 39%. If they hit 40% - which they should hit on the open stationary shots they are getting - the double teams might not be as aggressive.

Note that the biggest problem right now in attacking the double team is not the spacing. Even when no secondary defender is within 15 feet of Nana when an entry pass to him is made, every team still sends a second defender immediately. Look, for example, at the last play vs Colgate when O'Brien, who was guarding Brown above the arc, maybe 22 feet from the basket, immediately ran at Nana in the low post as the pass to him was made. Nana made a good quick pass to Brown, who passed to Moore as Moore's man rotated to Brown. And then Moore passed to Kimbal as Kimbal's man rotated to Moore. Fortunately Kimbal knocked down the shot. That was perfect ball movement (except for the final pass being tipped) and a perfect result.

Funny how making shots can make or break an offense. If guys can’t hit shots, we don’t have an offense with all of the firepower we thought. Simply put, guys have to hit shots. Kimbal and Avi are still getting into form, but the PL season is a large enough body of work to see that we need to shoot the ball better. Avi has to do something on offense, in my opinion.

Avi can too. This team collectively goes hot and cold as a group.

Remember the loss to Colgate on the “ controversial” player coming in from out of bounds call that cost us the game a few years back? Payback!

You might have a point here. Btw, the ref was Andy O;Brien, who was supposed to be a rising star in the profession. But when that happened, he was thrown under the bus by Reggie Greenwood, the PL head of officials and a long-time high level ref, who said you do not make that call without having warned the teams first. Since then, O'Brien has continued to ref a lot of games in the MAAC, NEC, and America East, but has only one PL assignment in three years since then.
