Yesterday North Carolina released their non conference schedule for next year. Probably only five more months until Penn will release theirs.

There's not that much left to determine. I think Fairfield and Monmouth owe us return games. There's the USVI thing and the Big 5. Only leaves a couple openings.

We will, I'm sure, have Lafayette and I think that we are also scheduled to go to Toledo. Not sure whether we have a game with Delaware State and/or Dayton. You're right though - only one or two games to schedule.

I hope we upgrade the schedule a bit from last year. It would be disappointing if it is as weak--it is what gave us that 16 seed.

Fairfield does not owe us a home game. They played in the Palestra in December of 2016, and we visited them as last season's opening game.

It is my understanding that Dayton was a guarantee game, and they will not be visiting us.

As previously noted, Miami is visiting us in return for a game we played there during the 2015-16 season.

More than likely they are done with the Hornets. I would tend to believe that, if Monmouth is not on the slate, a regional team (one within a 100 mile radius of Philadelphia, such as such as Rider, Bucknell, Delaware, or Lehigh) would be on the slate. It is possible that they will continue their series with Navy (next year would be in Annapolis), and/or they add Drexel back to the schedule.

Outside of the Miami game and the potential for a game against teams like Kansas State and/ or Missouri in the Paradise Jam, there may not be slot availability to fit in a game against a known program, although there could be flexibility if certain series (Fairfield, for instance, are not continued). Right now, if the schedule will be 30 games like last season, this is how it breaks down (with projected games):

Ivy home and home - 14 games
Villanova (H)
LaSalle (A)
Temple (A)
St. Joseph's (H)
Paradise Jam - three games
Lafayette (H)
Miami (H)
Navy (A) *I am betting that this series continues
Toledo (A) *assuming that the series was a home and home
Five (5) available games

It all depends if the schedule will be 28 or 30 games. I could see one game being Monmouth/Rider/Bucknell/D elaware/Lehigh, one against a high mid-major (Davidson, perhaps), and a home and home with Drexel. I would not even discount Penn State as a possibility.

It will be interesting to see how the schedule shakes out over the next five months.

I'm going to guess a Chicago area away game against a known program as a Max Rothschild graduation gift.

The Dayton away game last year might have been Antonio Woods' gift.

The Paradise Jam is an exempt event, so Penn will be at 29 games to start (27 games for Ivy teams, MTE counts as 1 for 3 games). It could schedule a 30th against any of the other seven competitors in the event within two weeks of the tournament as a freebie game.

DePaul, UIC, or, even, Chicago State (unlikely as they were bad last season and would bring down the SOS) could be a possibility then. It would be fun to schedule Loyola a year after the Final Four appearance.

Honestly, I don't know how Chicago State even manages to field a basketball team. Back in the day, I actually participated in a Model UN competition there in high school, but that is an institution which may be shut down altogether in the near future.

As for UIC, I still remember the Quakers losing to them in January, 1983 after blowing a 20 point lead at the Palestra. That was back when UIC was known as Illinois-Chicago Circle or, simply, The Circle.

Circle--no definite article.

As in, "where are you going to school? Circle". Or maybe, "Circle Campus" (but even that sounds too formal).

I think that was the first game Penn played when I was a freshman in 84....lost in Chicago IIRC.

Correct. Princeton didn't actually use the 30th game last year, but it could have, given that it scheduled USC (a Diamond Head participant) on the way to Diamond Head.

Harvard could have as well (and for some reason I recall that they did explore it with St. Joe's, but I could be wrong).

ODU or Northern Iowa would certainly be fun.

I was at that game. The team got booed as they left the floor. That was during Craig Littlepage's first season-- a season the team was expected to be terrific, but instead was a major disappointment.

I remember them beating a good SMU team (with future NBA center Jon Koncak), then three nights later upsetting Villanova early that season. It looked like that it was going to be a memorable season, then the wheels unexpectedly came off in January with the bottom being the collapse against the Flames.

I wish Sarge had stayed one more year. 82-83 was the year that Paul Little, Michael Brown, Avery Rawlings, David Lardner and George Noon (c'mon, be nice) were all seniors, and Karl Racine, Anthony Arnolie and Willie Oliphant were also on that team. If not for the coaching change, I've always believed that they could have been an absolutely outstanding team.

Little getting injured and that 1-4 offense Littlepaige put in place both hurt the team. They could've recovered from one of those but not both.

Willie is still the last Philly public school player to play for Penn.

Wasn't that a kind of forced punishment thing for fan behavior the previous year?

Still dumb. Second row in the Spectrum sucked compared to third row in the Palestra. Couldn't have the usual effect on the Princeton players.

schedule has been announced for 2018 @paradisejam!
11/16: Northern Iowa, 6:30 local (5:30 EST)
11/17 OR 11/18: Eastern Kentucky or Kansas State
11/19: Kennesaw State/Missouri/OldDominio n/Oregon State

Bit of a downer not to be on the side of the bracket with two HMs. Northern Iowa was KenPom 122 last year (Penn was 125).

I'm not so sure that "30th" game must be against one of the other seven competitors in the event. While Kansas State has scheduled Kennesaw State on 11/9, Eastern Kentucky has scheduled non-D1 Midway (Ky.), an NAIA school, on 11/13, as its additional (fourth) game.

-- After Kansas State, Old Dominion is the best team in this field, and people are going to take notice when they beat Oregon State and Missouri en route to a likely championship loss to Kansas State. The Monarchs went 25-7 last year and return leading scorers B.J. Stith and Ahmad Caver, who combine to form one of the deadliest three-point duos in the country. On the other side, Northern Iowa and Penn should play a defensive battle with the slight upper hand going to a Quakers team that was hideously under-seeded in the NCAA Tournament. --

Villanova just released their non-conference schedule. Playing Penn at the Palestra 12/11. Also playing LaSalle at the Palestra 12/1. Interestingly, they are playing home games against Temple and St Joe's on 12/5 and 12/8 respectively, making their full Big 5 slate played over 10 days.

Temple plays Drexel at the Palestra on Saturday, December 22. There was talk that the Penn-Temple game would be switched to the Palestra to give Fran Dunphy a farewell Palestra appearance. Apparently, that farewell appearance will be on December 22.

As of now I count 26 sure games-14 Ivy, 4 city, 3 tournament, Miami, George Mason, Rice, Toledo, Monmouth. That leaves three or four. One for sure is Lafayette, who we play every year. Drexel will not be one of them since Penn is not on their released nonconference schedule. Navy is a possibility.

If the rumored game against Howard in Dubai comes to fruition (which I am starting to doubt), that leaves two or three left. I still think Navy and Lafayette will be on the schedule and I would not be shocked if the Quakers schedule a game against one of the other Paradise Jam participants (possibly Old Dominion). If not an Old Dominion, I could see Rider or Delaware pop back on the schedule.

Barry W has identified 26 opponents, with three remaining.

I would expect Penn and Lafayette to continue the series, this year at the Palestra.

Penn owes Delaware State a game in Dover.

Howard owes Penn a home game, to be played in either Philadelphia or, perhaps, Dubai.

And, as others have pointed out, Penn could play one of the Paradise Jam participants as a 30th game.

That leaves no room for Navy, or for anyone else, unless Penn defers for a year either Lafayette, Delaware State or Howard.

So, at this point we appear to have our entire non-conference schedule except for:

1. The date of the Miami home game.
2. The date of the Lafayette home game.
3. The date and location of the Howard game (Sunday, December 23 if in Dubai).

As of now Penn has no games from November 19th to 27th, November 27th to December 8th, December 11th to December 29th, and December 31st to January 19th. During the period in early January I would suspect there would be at least one Princeton game. The other league travel partners (example Yale and Brown) play both games. If there is to be a Howard game, it would be after exams. Both the Miami and Lafayette games have to occur before the ACC and Patriot start league play.

Here is what I have:

@George Mason 11/6
Rice 11/9
@Paradise Jam 11/16-11/19
@Delaware State 11/27
@Lasalle 12/8
Villanova 12/11
@Toledo 12/29
Monmouth 12/31
@Temple 1/19/19
St Josephs 1/26/19

Need dates for Miami, Howard, Lafayette

With 14 league games that's 27. So we should expect 2 more and a possible 30th vs a Paradise Jam opponent. Most likely the other 2 will be bus distance from Penn. So Navy, or similar is likely.

Apologies, Stuarts Suss is right. We have 27 scheduled (including the Paradise Jam as 1 of those 27--3 for 1).

So all we have potentially left is a 30th game against a PJ opponent. Remedial math was never my strong suit.

I generally hate games against teams like Howard that are SOS killer and don't even have a local connection.

but tough to hate on something where the kids get a trip to dubai. does it run up against any other rule like a tournament (2 in x years) or an international trip (once every 4 years)? My guess is no given we just went to Italy and we're playing in Paradise Jam. but i dunno.

I have not heard anything to confirm a trip to Dubai. I am guessing this game is at the Palestra

We can eliminate Navy as being on the schedule.

Our opponents are all stated and set. Dates are the only variable

We have all the opponents, just need to confirm some dates. Here is what I can piece together for the Quakers:

10/20 Red/Blue Scrimmage
11/6 @George Mason
11/9 Rice
11/16-19 @Paradise Jam
11/24 (probable game @Palestra)
11/27 @Delaware State
12/1 and/or 12/5 (possible game)
12/8 @Lasalle
12/11 Villanova
12/15 or 12/22 (possible game dates)
12/29 @Toledo
12/31 Monmouth

1/5 or 1/12 @Princeton (possibly for Womens DH)

1/19 @Temple
1/26 St Josephs

2/1 @Cornell
2/2 @Columbia
2/8 @Brown
2/9@ Yale
2/15 Dartmouth
2/16 Harvard
2/22 Columbia
2/23 Cornell
2/26 Princeton (possible women's DH)
3/1 @Harvard
3/2@Dartmouth
3/8 Yale
3/9 Brown

Need dates for Miami, Howard, Lafayette

It would be very unusual if there was not a mid-week early season game at the Palestra.

In an email I got a few days ago Coach Donahue says there are 30 games. I count 29. 14 Ivy, 4 city, 3 tournament, G Mason, Rice, Delaware State, Miami, Monmouth, Toledo, Howard and Lafayette. Who am I missing? Does anyone know?

It would be one of the teams from Paradise Jam as the 30th. We can schedule them separately if we don't play them there to get to 30.

I got that e-mail too---pretty amazing that they are asking for season tickets to be paid by 9/14. Look at what success will do.

The big question is are they raising ticket prices. I'm going to guess yes.

I can't imagine it will be by much.

Yeah, not a big question. Prices are reasonable - downright cheap when compared to pro games. And it's fair to assume this is a fan base that can afford it.

While I am in no way complaining about spending between $25-30 per chairback seat to sit in the best gym in the country, it can add up. Hopefully they are cultivating some of the alumni of the past 10 years who missed out on seeing basketball success.

The only two schools that have not scheduled a 4th game in the tournament are Missouri and Oregon State. I got that info from Blogging the Bracket.

Prices on my season tickets remained the same. That was a pleasant surprise as it's certainly not how the professional teams in this city act.
