Great opportunity for Mike Smith to showcase his talents. Charlie Moore of Kansas and Smith will probably both play the point. It's interesting that they are both from the State of Illinois and that Moore was Mr. Basketball and Smith was the runner-up although probably a different year.

Agreed. He is going to be unstoppable if his shot selection improves. Best short guy since, ahem, yours truly.

I've watched a quarter of the first game against Germany and the second half of the game against Italy. Germany won by 10 and Italy by a score of 100-77. I have no clue about any of the Euro teams in terms of who the players are or how much time they play together, but what's striking is how much better at fundamentals they seem, ranging from being much better FT shooters to defensive positioning to passing to moving without
the ball etc.

Smith had a spurt in the game against Germany in which he scored 7 pts at the beginning of the second half, otherwise nothing notable from him, although, again, I only saw pieces of the two games.

Only saw parts of yesterday's game, the third one, against Paesi Bassi (a Dutch team??), which we won 61-55 principally, so it seemed to me, because we were more athletic. Still too much one on one play for my taste, but maybe that's inevitable for a team that only had several practices. Smith passed well. The last game is tomorrow.

Thanks AU for the youtube game film. Based upon what I saw I agree with Dr. V's comments about the German teams being stronger fundementally than the US East Coast All-Star Team. Of course, as he also noted that was not unexpected given that the East Coast Team only had a few practices. Also, I am encouraged by Mike Smith's speed and ball handling against the German squad. Given that we have so little front court depth, the coaching staff will need to capitalize on Mike's speed and ball handling for the LIons to be competitive. Incidentally, it seems reasonable to assume that the Lions will start at least three guards and play offense at a very uptempo torrid pace. Based upon what we have seen of Engles' coaching style the past two years, I can see him playing the same three or four guards for the first few minutes, then bringing in another set for the next few minutes and then returning to the starters. Columbia will need a ton of scoring from its guards to win games. With only four front court players on the roster, and none of them proven scorers, that means that at least four of our guards will need to score in double figures for Columbia to be successful. It's anyone's bet who will do the most scoring for Columbia, but my guess at this time, is that it will be mostly Smith, Bibbs, Ellis, Adlesh, Stefanini and Davis--all guards.

Every team we play is going to try to get Tape in foul trouble by driving right at him. Engles better figure out a way to deal with that.

But what are his options when the current roster lists only one center and two forwards. Play zone as much as possible? Start Brumant or Nweke with Tape coming off the bench? Use Hunter as an undersized center? His best option might be to search the Columbia campus in September for a couple of beefy George Starke types.

Is it recruiting malpractice to wind up with such a small front court? Even had Meisner stayed we would be in trouble.

Yes, but "recruiting malpractice," is much too mild a term. In my opinion, a better description is "recruiting disaster." Our coaches missing the train coming down the track certainly amounts to "malpractice," but the result is horrible.

Recruiting malpractice? Of course, Kyle Smith recruited the rising Juniors, Seniors and recent grads. Other than Tape and Eberle, who wasn't any good, those classes aren't particularly big either. Losing kids recently hurts and it would have been nice if the current staff was able to replace them but, again, some of you "supporters" are pretty quick to criticize.

With all due respect, Clyde, how can you not criticize the current coaching staff for the attrition in the front court--five of our eight front court players have departed in the last year. And, the current coaching staff only recruited one front court player who is eligible next year. Also, your suggestion that Kyle Smith caused this problem makes little sense. Indeed, Eberle's recruitment did not work out, but Kyle did leave Engles two studs in Meisner and Tape, whereas Engles has only recruited two eligible frontcourt players (Brumant and Nweke) in two years who are still with the team. Finally, you might wish to reconsider your suggestion that anyone who is critical of the coaching staff does not support the program. Surely, you are aware of this team's disappointing record the past two years, and that the preseason projections are likely to have us finish in the Ivy League cellar. In my opinion, the amount of criticism of the coaching staff has been mild under the circumstances. Unless things improve, there is bound to be much more criticism.

Men's Basketball worries aside, the Barstool Columbia website is reporting the 2019 commitments to Columbia of a three-star football quarterback from California and a very highly rated catcher for our perennial championship baseball team. Also, Women 's Basketball Coach Megan Griffith has recruited a star-studded group of incoming Lions including a very talented point guard from Chet Forte's home state of New Jersey. Men's and women's soccer and women's softball are all expected to contend for the Ivy League Championship this year. Not to mention our outstanding men's tennis team and lightweight crew. In fact, we are seeing dramatic improvement with regards to all Columbia's athletic teams with only one exception. That of course is men's basketball. Why is that?

CADEN BELL is the three star QB from a California FB powerhouse who just committed. The Bagnoli recruiting magic is still strong. Eleven committed FB players and it isn’t even the end of August. The baseball team also nabbed a catcher whose name is now public but I don’t have it handy. So where are the early MBB recruits?

Don't know where the literary Chet is from; but THE Chet Forte, in fact, came out of Hackensack High. We also had Steve Pellino, a pretty good player from Ridgefield, New Jersey in the 70s.

Chet: You're right at the heart of the matter with respect to the men's basketball program. Whether or not the current coaching staff has had something or nothing to do with 5 non-graduating players having recently left the program, their ability to recruit has been and will continue to be sorely impacted by this attrition rate.

Chet:
Combo football/baskets may have ended at CU with the Head Hog, but, as you probably know, there been a few combo athletes in other sports since George:
Most notably, Mike Wilhite '78; an Isaac Cohen type player for Tommy Penders in the mid 1970s and a starting centerfielder/baseball player on a team that competed well in the NCAA Baseball Tournament of 1976. Also John Baumann from Connecticut was an All-Ivy selection in BOTH baseball and basketball, just ten. years ago.
And just before the turn of the 20th century, legend had it that the great Ungvar, himself, flirted with two sports stardom- his sports of choice being Chinese Checkers and competitive Goulash Eating; supposedly, he went so far as petitioning the University and then President Nicholas Murray Butler to have both such perversions declared fully sanctioned and funded University sports.
Unfortunately for the BlueBooster, Butler had his own political ambitions to focus on at the time; not to mention getting the spelling of those Greek names right, as they'd appear atop the proposed library; not to mention, that on. a national level, Butler was a staunch Republican, and as such demonstrated little patience with Hungarian Jews or even a hint of interest in their food intake.
Although his NCAA athletic career came to a premature halt, Ungvar's never been one to be so quickly deterred; and just before the application of legal remedies, he was able to reach an out of court settlement with the University, allowing him to sit on the home team bench during men's basketball games into perpetuity- now that's become a perk Ungvar's taken full advantage of to this day, offering him a quiet place to drown his sorrows & catch some ZZZs without disturbing anyone!
