The Bison got 14 of a possible 18 first place votes in the official PL preseason poll:

Patriot League Women's Basketball Preseason Poll
Bucknell – 154 (14 first-place votes)
American – 137 (2 first-place votes)
Loyola Maryland – 129 (4 first-place votes)
Lehigh – 91
Navy – 91
Holy Cross – 81
Army West Point – 75
Lafayette – 63
Boston University – 56
Colgate – 23

Kate Walker and Kaitlyn Slagus were both named to the preseason All-PL team. Loyola was only 7-11 last year, but has four of the better players in the league. One of them, who was 1st team All-PL two years ago but missed last year due to an injury, returns for a 5th season. I think they should be better than American and probably the biggest threat.

Bison open the season at #16 in the mid-major poll. Tough home opener against MM #1 Quinnipiac.

I agree with that Loyola is going to be tough. They're a team that always gives us trouble, even when not at 100%.

Bison preview:

https://bucknellbison.com/

Very tough first few weeks. First game is on the road at Monmouth Tuesday, followed by the home opener vs Quinnipiac, the #1 midmajor in the nation. Q has won three NCAA tournament games the past two years, beating #5 Marquette, #4 Miami, and then #8 Miami the next year. Then they play at Drexel, #15 in the midmajor poll, followed by a road game at #18 Syracuse and then UMass.

Very interesting article about Kate Walker. Kate's only D1 offer came from Bucknell and she has gone on to be one of the top players in the PL.

We have of late become a very good PL team, but have never shown the ability to compete with power conference teams. I think Coach Roussell is in the process of changing that, and the scheduling reflects that,

Bison roll past Monmouth 70-32 in season opener

Very impressive, except that the Bison continued their trend of too many turnovers.

Bison got a huge win over mid-major #1 Quinnipiac at Sojka. May have played the best quarter of basketball I've seen from them, outscoring Q 25-6 to take a 20pt lead into the 4th. Had a dismal 4th offensively (1 FG) but made FTs and hung tough on D.

This team is for real. Excited to see what the rest of the season holds. If they can beat Drexel on the road, they will be ranked very highly.

Congrats to the Bison Women. This is the biggest win I can remember. Even the Creamer and Almind teams didn’t have a win of this magnitude.

Not to look too far ahead, but if they beat Drexel that sets up an interesting game at #18 Syracuse. It will be great to see if they can compete at that level.

Also, they made 85% of their FTs. They might need to start giving lessons.

Great game! Nip and tuck for most of the first half, until Q opened up a 7 point lead late second quarter. Then the Bison avalanche began. BU rallied to take a 1 point lead at the half and then scored the first 14 of the third quarter to blow it open. Quinipiac’s omly Other loss in their previous 25 games... UCONN.

1. Following up on the streak across the second and third quarter. With 3:25 left in the second quarter, it was Q in front by a 37-30 score. By halftime, it was BU 38, Q 37. And over the first 4:22 of the third quarter, it suddenly became Bucknell 52, Quinnipiac 37.

2. Quinnipiac is definitely the real deal. Watching them play for the first 17 minutes was seeing high quality basketball - great shooting, crisp offense, very few turnovers, and well-coordinated defense. Despite not having much size at all. Having said that, once the Bison onslaught began, their shooting suddenly went ice cold and the turnovers began.

Q starts four seniors, all of whom started for last year's great team. And their first sub is another senior who saw extensive PT last year. The one difference from last yeqr - and it could be a big one - is that they lost the coach's daughter, who was the starting PG.

Just as the men’s home loss to lowly Fairfield, this is the kind of game a selection committee will look at to help evaluate the women. The OOC is a big deal for mid-major teams. It’s a great win.

I was not able to watch the Monmouth game so this was the first I saw the team play. It is obvious that the seniors went into the off-season committed to making this year special. Both English and Slagus have reconfigured their bodies ... the announcer referenced how English changed her workout and diet habits, I am sure Slagus made the same commitment.

One other item that jumped out at me ... during one of the timeouts, the camera was on our bench. The intensity with which each player ... the 5 in the game and the others standing behding ... was focused on the coach was pretty cool.

They have a tough non-conference schedule, so I'm not sure what the final record might be, but this has the makings of a special year. And, given at one point all 5 players on the court were sophomores and freshmen, the program seems to be in a good place.

I would say there are likely two differences. First, the ESPN ranking is the opinion of one person, their main women's hoops writer, Graham Hays, while the mid-major poll is a collective effort of almost 40 coaches.

Secondly, I think there is a difference in philosophy. Hays apparently is basing his rating strictly on results on the court thus far in the 2018-19 season. The coaches apparently are looking at perceived strength of the teams beyond simply early results. Quinnipiac was #1 in the season-ending poll last year and they returned four of their five starters, so it's not irrational to think they are one of the top teams, despite their slip-up against the Bison. They did have a good win on the road in their opener vs Drexel btw. Time will tell.

It hasn't happened often, but it did happen fairly recently. In 2015-16, the women went 17-1 in PL play, losing only to 17-1 Army, and they went 25-8 overall. The men went 14-4 and 17-14 that year. Women ranked #141 (Massey) while the men were #212. Women that year also won an NIT game behind two of the best players they've ever had, Claire DeBoer and Jacquie Klotz. The men were upset in the first round of the PL tournament.

Prior to that year, the last time the women were better was 2008-09 when they were pretty good and the men had their worst year in decades.

The Bison were favored by 11 points in this one (Massey), so winning by 19 on a neutral court was a nice win. A few nice stats:

1. Soph Abby Kapp scored 16 points in the first 13 minutes of the game.

2. The team hit a team record 14 3-pointers on 30 attempts.

3. Kaitlyn Slagus had another double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and also had four assists and three blocks.

4. Kyi English had 7 assists, 3 steals, and zero turnovers.

5. Team had only 11 turnovers - much better than their usual.

This was a big improvement. They had 31! against Syracuse. The only thing that kept that game close was that Syracuse was almost as bad with 24.

Quinnipiac barely lost to #10 Texas yesterday 56-55. Quinnipiac led by 12 at halftime.

Lost to #21 Missouri today by 14. Have to give them credit for playing a tough schedule.

Brown made this one tough, shooting lights out in the 1st half. Didn't expect we'd score 43 and be down 5. But the team stepped up in the 2nd half, especially defensively, to pull away 91-78 behind 30 points by Slagus. Great to see the depth with a different leading scorer in each of the 3 games.

Easy win for the women tonight at St. Bona after a bad loss to them last year. Woke up after a tough 1st quarter to go up 12 at the half. Then put it away in the 3rd. Played mostly bench players in the 4th.

As noted elsewhere, RPI doesn't mean much this early, but the Bison are currently at 20. They have a few more fairly easy games before they head to Iowa St, who is #4 despite a loss at S. Dakota yesterday.

Yes she has been in a boot for the last 10 days. Did not play any of the three games up in Providence. Not sure if it is a sprained ankle or some sort of stress fracture.

Kept the turnovers to a minimum again today, which is certainly helping. They've also picked up the defensive effort the last few games. Also had another explosive 3rd quarter, not that the 1st & 2nd were bad.

Glad they have a couple of home games after finals before they go to Iowa St. If they play with them with the kind of confidence they've shown lately, it will be a good game.

The best seed for a PL team has been a 13 - which I believe has happened four times. An 11 would be very impressive. One thing that may hurt, even if the team performs well, is that the women's committee doesn't just try to seed the teams, but also uses geography as a significant factor for lower seeds. The women's tournament - unlike the men's - does not make money, so they try to contain costs where it's not too outrageous.

I am fairly certain it is 13 - the same number as the men. Definitely not less. In women's basketball, a team can give out as many as 15 but not many do.

Unlike most sports, basketball scholarships are all full rides. No partials.

They had bad back-to-back losses vs Central Michigan and Princeton. In the Massey ratings, they fell from 59th to 90th. CMU btw is ranked 26th of all schools, so that was not at all a bad loss, but still two losses will have an effect. Q'pac btw has had a brutal schedule. They may have bitten off a bit too much after their great run last year.

Bison btw are rated at #77 by Massey.

Another big win for the women today. After a rough 1st half where they were down 29-26, they exploded for 30 pts in the 3rd Q and 54 in the 2nd half. Another good game for Abby Kapp. Kate Walker also played well and looked more confident. 23-25 from the FT line. Would love to see the men do that.

A couple of stats demonstrate the improvement made by the Bison as the game went on:

Turnovers: 7 turnovers in the first quarter, 3 in the second, 2 in the third, and 3 in the fourth (all in the final minutes after the game had been decided).

Or viewed another way, 10 turnovers in the first 15 minutes. And 2 turnovers in the next 20 minutes. Then 3 in the final 5 minutes, after the game was over.

Threes: 1-7 (14%) in first half. And 6-11 (55%) in second half.

Bison led 58-39 in the waning seconds of the 3rd quarter. Four minutes later, the lead was down to 61-57, following an 18-3 run by Youngstown. And Youngstown had a wide open 3-pointer that they missed that would have cut the lead to one. That probably would have had you really worried, had it gone in.

After that, they managed to keep the margin between 5 and 8 points until the end.

Bison women play at Iowa State tomorrow at 2 PM EST. ISU is currently ranked #25 by Massey and #26 in the AP poll. Their only two losses this year were road games to ranked teams. Bison are 14-point underdogs per Massey.

ISU has one of the top few fan bases in the nation. Last year they finished 3rd in the nation in attendance, close to 10,000 per game. They outdrew Tennessee and Notre Dame, to name a couple. They have averaged over 9000 per game each year for more than a decade - likely #3 in total attendance for those years, behind only UConn and Tennessee. I'm not going to do any research, but I wouldn't be surprised if this game will set a record for the Bison for most spectators at a game.

Oddly, the ISU preview article provides zero information about Bucknell. Taking this game lightly? Both teams are coming off long layoffs since their last game. Hopefully, that affects Bucknell less than ISU.

I wouldn't be surprised if this game will set a record for the Bison for most spectators at a game.

Attendance may be a bit lower tomorrow, as Iowa State football is playing in the Alamo Bowl tonight vs Washington State. So some of their fans likely will be in San Antonio.

Played Iowa St fairly even for 3 quarters. Unfortunately it was the 1st, 3rd, & 4th. Got outscored 28-6 in the 2nd and never recovered. Shot poorly, under 30% and 17% from 3. Kapp and Slagus played limited minutes due to foul trouble.

Since beating the Bison, Iowa State has been on fire. First they beat a 9-3 Kansas State team 96-58. Then went on the road and beat 10-1 Kansas 82-73. Both of those teams are well within Massey's top 50 - even after the losses. As a result, Iowa State has moved up to #20 in the AP poll. Previous Bison opponent Syracuse, who the Bison played close for most of the game, is now #12.

Women also played an ugly game at Lafayette - 6 pts in the 1st quarter. Turned things around in the 2nd half to win 56-47. Slagus ends up with 20 points after scoring 2 in the 1st half. The other starters were MIA. Taylor O'Brien had a breakout game with 13. Ellie Mack did not play. Hope it is not serious. She has arguably been our best player over the last several games.

Boston is up 27-10 on Lehigh at halftime at home. Lehigh scored 2 points in the 1st quarter. And I thought we had a bad 1st quarter. Winner goes to 4-0. We play Lehigh on Wednesday. Would rather get them coming off a loss.

Solid win over Lehigh tonight 71-53. Colgate takes down Boston on the road. Bison are back on top (OK, tied). We head to Hamilton on Saturday. Colgate is much improved. Won't be an easy game.

There will likely be more losses for the top teams as the season goes on. But it is possible that the Bison game at American on Saturday March 2nd could be a huge one. Current PL standings:

Bucknell 5-1
American 5-1
Boston U 4-2
Army WP 3-3
Lehigh 3-3
Navy . 3-3
Colgate 3-3
Holy Cross 2-4
Lafayette 1-4
Loyola MD 0-5

Loyola continues to be perhaps the biggest enigma ever in PL basketball. They have two players who have been 1st team All-PL, with one having been the league's best player statistically last year. Plus they have last year's ROY and another good player. Yet they not only are winless in the PL but are 1-15 overall. And this is a team that was a solid pick for 3rd, with more 1st place votes than American.

That has me baffled too. I thought maybe they had injury issues, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Except for an OT game at Boston, none of their PL losses have been close. That includes a 44(!) point loss at American last Wednesday. That's a larger margin than their loss to Maryland. Bad team chemistry?

Loyola may have just broken out of their funk. Had a 21-20 lead on Lafayette at the half then scored 31 in the 3rd quarter to take a 21 pt lead into the 4th. Karcz, who is arguably their best player, is not playing.

That was a very tough game we won today. We didn’t shoot well, but HC is very good at getting to the hoop and drawing fouls, and their free throw shooting is excellent. I feel sorry for all the students who were partying behind the houses on St. Catherine Street. They missed a good game.

The women played very well the last 3 minutes after HC went up by 4. Huge 3's by Mack and Johnson. The team showed a lot of poise.

19 lead changes and 14 ties. That's a hard fought game.

Bison women on TV! Great game to watch. As jkrun noted, entire game close with Bison making comeback in last 3 minutes. They looked well coached but at times played "small," getting beat consistently on boards. Fortunately, made a few more clutch 3's and layups in the 4th Q than HC for the win.

Women got an easy win over Lafayette yesterday. It's a shame more fans didn't stay for at least part of the game. (I'll confess we left early since the outcome was never in doubt.) This was their 9th win in a row and the senior class broke the program record for most career wins (held by last year's class). They are 7 wins away from breaking the PL record.

They remain tied with American for 1st place at 10-1. American's only loss came at Sojka in the first PL game, so they have won 10 in a row. Cecily Carl has 37 and 28 in their last two games. We don't see them again until March 2 in the next to last regular season game. Needless to say, a huge game.

It's too early to speculate about post-season, but when has that ever stopped us. In the event we win the remaining regular season games, the first two playoff games, and lose a close final to American, what are the prospects for an at-large NCAA bid? Our current RPI is 49 (AU is at 93). Our record would be 28-5 with the five losses coming to two RPI top 25 teams (Syracuse(8) & Iowa St(10)), two top 100 teams (Drexel(83) & AU) and one top 150 team (BU(144)). Besides the two regular season wins over AU, we have a top 100 win over Quinnipiac (66) who is now 12-0 in the MAAC and 17-6 overall. Is a top 50 RPI, regular season championship, a 28-5 record, a strong out of conference schedule, and no bad losses enough?

No. As Jay Bilas has often said, bubble teams have to show you who they can beat. All teams have showed you who the can lose to but are you capable of winning games once you’re in the field?

Frankly, Syracuse and Iowa State did not produce the kind of close scores I would want to see as a member of the selection committee either. The gap in women’s hoops between the very good and good is enormous.

I think you're right. The Syracuse game was closer than the score might look. We missed an opportunity there. No doubt a couple P5 teams with weaker resumes than ours will get in. ESPN has us as a 12 seed, which would be very good for a PL team. Just need to keep winning and hope AU stumbles along the way.

That’s it and I didn’t mean to come off as negative. This is a great team I believe capable of beating a 5 seed. We simply don’t have a high profile win to validate an at-large bid from the committee.

Women picked up a tough win at Lehigh tonight. Went down by 7 in the 3rd Q, but came back in the 4th to lead by as many as 12. Had to hang on at the end to win by 5. Still tied with American at 11-1. On to the next one. Kate Walker went over 1000 pts tonight despite playing sparingly her freshman year.

Yes, definitely an extreme back-and-forth game.

BU 34, LU 22 first 17 minutes
LU 22, BU 3 over next 8 minutes
4-4 for next 3 minutes
BU 27, LU 7 over next 10 minutes
LU 13, BU 5 for final 2 minutes

BU 73, LU 68 TOTAL

Worse, AU actually trailed by 6 points with less than a minute left. Then outscored Boston 8-0 for the win. Had Boston won, it would effectively have given the Bison a 1.5 game advantage since they would have owned the tiebreaker (RPI of 40) vs AU in the event of a loss to AU at the end.

Both still have to play @ HC, which is no gimme. Though HC got crushed tonight at Army. Otherwise, it's likely to come down to the showdown in DC on March 2 for 1st place and home court for the championship game. One will get the WNIT bid, though I'm sure our seniors have had enough of the WNIT.

I felt sorry for Loyola last night. They only dressed 7 players and apparently decided to avoid foul trouble by not playing defense. It showed as the Bison shot 63% on the way to 87 points. Loyola shot above their season average and still lost by 34.

BTW Roussell is approaching a 90% win percentage in PL games over the last 4 seasons - 61-7 if I counted right. That's astounding.

At this point, I don't think there is any question that Roussell is #1. He has brought in a couple of great recruiting classes, plus a player who would have been one of the best in PL history (Jacquie Klotz) if she hadn't given up basketball for personal reasons. Nathan Davis has yet to have a really strong recruiting class, based on what the players have done so far. Davis, in contrast, inherited five All-PL players.

Also we need to remember that Rousell inherited a team that had gone 5-25 and was in total disarray. Yet he managed to land a great recruiting class (Claire DeBoer, Sune Swart, and Megan McGurk) immediately. That class, plus Klotz the next year, led to a very fast turnaround.

Could happen - but AU has not been dominant lately. They beat Lehigh by 3 points at home, Boston by 2 points at home, and LC by 10 points today in a game where they trailed with 7:30 left to play.

Btw, for those who didn't watch the Bison today, the final shot - which came on an inbound play after a deflected pass - was so close to the buzzer that it took the referees several minutes reviewing the video frame-by-frame to make a decision. Bison would have won were it not for the silly rule the NCAA put into effect last year where a team in the final minutes can inbound the ball near the basket they are shooting at after a timeout. Copied from the NBA to make endings more exciting. It does do that - but at the expense of fairness.

Women blew out Navy last night. But unfortunately Kaitlyn Slagus went down with what appeared to be an ankle or knee injury. She has to be viewed as questionable for the showdown with American on Saturday. Slagus and AU's Cecily Carl have to be the two favorites for POY.

Roussell said after the game it is her ankle. She could have played the 2nd half but didn't need to. Hopefully, she is OK to play on Saturday. I doubt she will sit out if she's at all capable of contributing.

After a shaky 2nd quarter, the Bison women ran away from Army to finish 16-2, clinch a share of the regular season championship, and earn the #1 seed for the tournament. They are 64-8 in regular season PL games the past 4 years. This senior class has also tied Army for the most wins overall at 99. They will play the winner of Loyola vs Navy in the QF on Monday.

Loyola and Boston are tied in the 4th. If Boston loses, they would be the #4 and play HC in the QF. That means if we win our game on Monday we would play one of the two teams that beat us in the semi.

NCAA seed? Ay. Get through the PL Tourney first please. A third win over American this season is a huge deal. I watched a stretch of the American game last night. They have great chemistry.

Now that I said that, to beat the jinx....I am hoping 10 or 11, if the RPI is guidance. As has been previously discussed, there aren't any top-25 wins, so 12 or 13 wouldn't be surprising.

ESPN has us at #13. But with a couple conference upsets, we could easily move up the 12. Can't see us being seeded any higher. But have to get there first.

Can't complain about the picks, although you can make a good case for Kapp for the 3rd team. I think the Bison depth, which limited her minutes, hurt her chances. Everyone knew POY was going to be between Slagus and Carl. Probably was a close vote. As for the freshman team, as usual, it was largely a question of usage. Bucknell's Walls and O'Brien are as good as most of the players who made that team - but they didn't get the minutes due to the Bison depth.

Penn State just fired their head coach. It is very possible they might contact Roussell. Another possible target could be Dan Burt, who at one time was the top Bison assistant. He has done a good job as the head coach at Duquesne.

I think Penn State would be wise to look into Roussell. From what I have seen he is not only a very good coach but is a nice guy.

With the balance and depth of this team, I'm not surprised they didn't get more individual recognition. That's OK. What matters is hanging another banner. I wouldn't trade our players and coaching staff for anybody.

I'm really going to miss this senior class next year. They've been fun to watch.

They're a great group and can hopefully go out on top. But we'll reload and be just as tough next year.
