Where is Bonaventure? Can the Bisons beat them in their opening game?

Bonaventure lost 2 elite guards as well as 2 other players who transferred.

Courtney Stockard is most likely their best player; however, they also bring in a UNLV transfer who was highly touted out of HS

Stockard is expected to be out for the Bucknell game (and somewhat longer) rehabing from surgery.

St. Bonaventure is adjacent to Olean NY, which is near the PA border and about 70 miles south/southeast of Buffalo. Res can illuminate the highlights of Olean.

As for Bona, they can be beaten if the Bison play well. The Reilly Center is a tough place to play and there will be a loud sellout crowd, but as noted above, Bona is not as strong as last year. Last season they went 14-4 in the A-10 (second place), beat both Syracuse and Maryland, and earned an at-large bid into the Big Dance. They look more like A-10 middle-of-the-pack this year.

This will be a win for the Bison. There's going to be a big crowd of Orange at the game cheering on Sestina & Bucknell as this is a 45 min drive from his hometown.

I'd be happy to, though I'm a couple of decades out of date. I will be in attendance though, and am happy to play tour guide to the best of my ability.

It will be an interesting game. Both teams have obvioulsy had significant losses to graduation. With Stockard almost certainly out for this game, Bona is going to have to rely on some seemingly talented but in most cases raw newcomers. I think Nate will be key. He's going to have to keep his cool. He's going to be pumped playing closer to home and if he's going up against Ikpeze for Bona as he almost certainly will, there's going to be a lot of both incidental and non-incidental contact. It wouldn't surprise me if they both are in foul trouble early and often.

As to the possibility of a sellout, I doubt it. I'm sure there will be some sort of banner raising going on, but a Wednesday night is a tougher sell these past years with an increasingly shrinking and aging local community and fewer than 2,000 undergraduates. Nate's going to bring in some from nearby Cameron County PA but there just aren't that many to bring in. I'm guessing about 4,500 ("official" capacity is 5,480). On a weekend, you get alums from Buffalo and Rochester driving down but not so much on weeknights.

St. Bonaventure is well-coached and will be prepared despite not having all of their key players available. And, it has to be said ... I've been there twice and left both times thinking the visiting team was homered. Tough opener.

For some perspective, over the past five seasons the 9th place team in the A-10 was ranked higher than the top PL team three times, per Pomeroy and Massey. The other two years the 9th place A-10 team was ranked ahead of all but one PL team (the 2017 and 2018 Bison).

TuneIn Radio app and Eagle 107. (There was a period when we couldn't listen to games that way but now it works again.)

One way. Get the Sunbury Broadcasting app (free). Eagle 107 is one of their stations. In prior years the Bison FB and hoops games were blacked out of the feed that is provided by the app, but so far this season FB games have been carried. Hopefully hoops will be too, If not, you are forced to the Bucknell broadcast app, which has a nominal cost (something like $5.00 a year). As I said, so far the Sunbury app has worked for FB, and that is the simplest way to get access. If when game day comes, they black it out, follow the “listen” link in the pregame write up. There may be a slight cost, but it is a one time as opposed to per game charge.

'Bison'

I think this is going to be a close game, with our up-tempo and swagger being the kicker getting us the win.

There's really nothing to do in Olean except hunting and watch St. Boneventure games. If a relative hits you up to buy the 1000 dollar cutco knives, they are made in Olean.

St. Boneventure has gone downhill since the Bob Lanier days of the late sixties and I remember him being the number one pick in the NBA draft in 1970.

Are by chance can tickets be bought through Bucknell? Or at least will there be an identified section for Bucknell fans? Presumably half of Cameron County will be there.

This Bona center is stylistically similar to Nana so I think Nate will have his number, and Sestina will have a fanbase there so all systems go for him. Kimbal and company are going to overwhelm this team and its going to be a statement game on a tough away court for the Bison. Bucknell is certainly facing a tough team on a home court but they will manage escape velocity and beat this team handily.

Well I know there's more than 150 ppl going from lil Emporium/Cameron County. Not to mention ppl from neighboring towns/rival schools in the tri-county area happy to get a chance to see a local kid playing D1 ball so close to home. There should be quite a big turnout of ppl cheering Bucknell on.

2,250, give or take.

And Emporium is is a fair distance from Hamilton -- over 200 miles. I doubt any of of Nate's high school friends would make the trip to Colgate when they can get to Sojka in half the time.

From past few years, my impression is that this game will tell us a lot about how the Bison will perform this year. Bonaventure is well coached and doesn't tend to beat itself. Bison had a great point guard last year - interested in who gets the most minutes running the team in this game.

As far as running the team, I don't think there's any question that Sotos will be the PG most of the time. The bigger question is who takes over when Sotos takes a breather. It could be Andrew Funk or else Kimbal could slide over to the point.

video preview for the game

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3fCik8GePXg#f auxfull...

reference to two close scrimmages, so Bing scrimmage was close and competitive as well.

can see Meeks sidelined as reported earlier. if he is not ready to go in the game that hurts, how do folks think we fill his time at the 4 when Moore is out? given it is first game of the season, i suspect we see a few minutes from every option: Jones, Robertson and Spear. could possibly play Newman and Sestina together, but think we would only see that possibility late game if Moore fouled out and it looked like the best matchup against Bonnies front line.

the scrimmages were closed as per the NCCA, not close as in scoring. This is going to be a fun to watch and a very good men's bb team. The Bucknell Women are going to be in the hunt for a championship, good Div 1 basketball in Sojka Pavilion.

The St. Bonaventure game is on the new ESPN+, which is not to be confused with WatchESPN or ESPN3.

It’s $4.99 a month but you can do a seven-day free trial.

No idea about the coverage this year - but it is an ESPN event and most of the games will be on one of their networks. Last year the first round games were on ESPN and ESPN2. After that the games on the winners' side were all on ESPN and ESPN2, while the other side of the bracket had coverage for every game on either ESPNU or ESPN3.

If you sign up for the trial tonight, you can watch, among other things, Colgate at NJIT, and /or Penn at G. Mason. Ivanauskas off to a monster start for Colgate.

Seeing that Hawaii is an ESPN affair, I suspect they will clip us for the pay service for at least one of the games.

Looks like a good crowd, though. I might have to bump my estimate up to 5,000 or so. I'll be leaving shortly myself. I hope I don't run into too many coal trucks on the hills around Philipsburg and Clearfield.

I forgot to add, I'm not aware that Bona reserved any areas for Bison/Sestina fans but when they do, they usually stick visiting team fans in the corner in Sec. 1. Sec.1 does indeed appear to be sold out so maybe that's what BisonFan4 is talking about

I'm in upstate NY (SUNY Geneseo) so Im going to go to the game. Tickets with a few added fees are pretty much twice a Bucknell ticket but what the heck. Who's going to take all the open minutes? Can Sestina play 30 plus minutes? Can Bruce play 30? I think Sotos will net a double digit score and double digit assist you heard it here. Heres the point breakdown: MacKenzie 16, Sestina 13, Sotos 11, Moore 6, Toomer 5, Robinson 7, Jones 8, Newman 8 Spears 8. O'Reilley 9 (three 3's) for a total of 91. Bucknell wins 91-84.

We're playing ok the ball isn't bouncing our way and they have an advantage in the paint even when sestina is in. Paul Newman is overwhelmed. Sotos has icy hands but is hustling. Kimball is doing well. The freshman are doing ok funk threw two bricks and Ellis is holding his own. If we can shore up a few details we will be ok. Oreilley the three point specialist needs to drain his shots. A close one even with our mediocre play. Olean is a nice place vibrant not depressed like I thought. Love the roundabouts on the main st and st boneventure is nice with gracious folks.

I’m only listening, but after 32 minutes, seems the bench is nonexistent, save for a late Newman rally. Too many turnovers, some questionable defense and some poor shooting. FT’s? Guess Nana wasn’t the only one who was bad at the line.

That was one helluva gutsy win! Three stars graduated. First game on the road against an A-10 team. Down most of the game. Did everything right at the end. Well executed and well coached. I couldn't be more proud. Griff must see something of himself in Kimball. I'll make a prediction here: Kimball will be first team All PL. Maybe Sestina too!

Well a nice win on the road. Definitely have things to improve but still, a good win. Davis played his starters more than any early season game I can recall. We will need more from the bench. Down the stretch the more experienced Bison made a few blunders, but came up with some big shots. Kimbal a great offensive game, Sestina a huge all-around game...he needs some help on the glass. Good to be 1-0.

Ok first and foremost the refs were absolutely atrocious. So bad, they shouldn’t see another D1 game. You call 3 consecutive flagrant fouls...and I don’t think any of them were. The worst was the double foul...how can you call a block and a charge!???!

Ok overall it was a sloppy win, but a solid win none the less. They showed heart coming back and you have to respect that. The free throw shooting was horrible outside of Sotos and Kimbal and what is Sotos doing with two consecutive fouls. Obviously Nate dominated on the boards but I’d like him to be more aggressive down low. Moore and Newman had flashes but were both inconsistent. My biggest complaint is there seems to be very little flow and penetration with the offense. Maybe they need to feel each other out, but it was stagnant.

Oh and Kimbal was awesome...that is all.

Newman had minimal minutes. Kimbal is the story tonight. Senior leadership from a guy who had a PL Player of the Year kinda night. Stats don’t lie.

And I hate to reiterate this but the Bonnie’s are an A10 opponent on the road. After massive graduation losers.

nice win with a efficient comeback, always tough on the road and the Bonnies are a good test for a first game. Ellis, Newman, and Spear are going to be very good as the season progresses, two guys we good have used tonight Nate Jones and John Meeks but as is always, you play with the guys available, we will play better and that better begins at Sojka on Sat.

It was fun to watch the Bison on the road and fun to get an overtime win. Remember in 2008 Bucknell was down 14 at the half and came back but lost in double overtime? I'm glad they pulled this one out. Kimbal put this team on his shoulders. Bruce didn't score much but when he did they were clutch points and some in overtime. This team is loose, relaxed, and a little swashbuckling but it seemed to work out for them. The freshman Ellis reminds me of a stretched-out and thinned John Azzinaro, and he played well. Funk was thrown in there and will do very well eventually.

I was impressed with Newman too. He got off to a shaky start, but ended up with 10 points. Made some nice post moves and drew a few fouls. Now he just has to make FTs.

It was interesting to see him and Sestina on the court together. That combo might work well against bigger teams.

It was interesting to watch the game as Mrs. Bison89 was doing 75mph heading south on I-95. Other than the homer announcers, I really enjoyed the quality of the streaming video on ESPN+. Also, it looked like a big, large crowd. The student body really seems to support their team.

Overall, any road win is a good road win. Beating an A10 team that defeated UCLA in the NCAA tournament last year makes it all that much better even if they did graduate lots of talent. (BTW, so did the Bison!)

Was that a group of high school referees? If not, they should be retrained and start again by refereeing Saturday CYO games at St. Mary's.

I have heard of double fouls before where one player was trying to establish position in the post and the defender was fighting for position, but WTF was that? I have NEVER heard of a CHARGE and BLOCKING double foul. Either it is Charge or a Block!!! Don't get me started on the 3 supposed intentional fouls. They were all BS. CYO reffing time!

Aside from the free throw shooting, that was a good road win. GO BISON!

New season, new team, new dream . . .

Good win? Solid win? Nice win? Sloppy win? Folks this was a great win! A win that any of us would have been happy with last year with a senior-laden line-up. A double digit road underdog at an A10 school. This is a tough crowd to impress, I guess.

And how many moving screens did they call? There seemed to be an offensive foul every other possession.

Newman had minimal minutes.

This is an oddly dismissive comment. No player's performance should be judged by minutes. It's what you do with the minutes you get.

Newman was a true impact player, scored 10 points in 15 minutes, had a key role in the comeback, and demonstrated determined, effective defense against much larger players.

As advertised, his game has improved significantly.

One point nobody has mentioned was the great defense at the end of regulation and in OT. Other than two stupid fouls by Sotos, they made Bona take really tough shots and forced several turnovers.

You're right, the crowd was outstanding. The student sections were largely filled 45 minutes before the tip and they were consistently loud.

Prevailing in that hostile atmosphere made the win all the sweeter and should give the team even more resiliency going forward.

LaPhonso Ellis and his wife were in the stands. ESPN has very nicely assigned him to work the Diamond Head Classic.

Newman's play was crucial in holding the team together for a period midway through the second half when Moore and then Sestina went out for breathers and SBU was threatening to build a huge lead. Here are the Newman references for a 4-minute span where he scored 8 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and had a block:

13:02 REBOUND OFF by NEWMAN,PAUL
12:59 MISS FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
12:59 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:58 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:58 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:28 BLOCK by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:10 GOOD LAYUP by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:32 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:15 FOUL by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:03 REBOUND DEF by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:42 MISS FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:28 GOOD LAYUP by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:05 FOUL by NEWMAN,PAUL

His FT shooting is obviously a work in progress, but his defense is greatly improved over last season - which is really important on a team with only two centers - and his offensive ability near the rim is also much better than a year ago. This improvement has made the team a lot more competitive.

Paul Newman by necessity played very well after a slow start and will do very well this year. He's just going to get better as the year goes on. He needs to eat some ice cream and Popeyes biscuits but he'll have to use his quickness to his advantage. He actually had lightning speed after he figured out he's better step up his game or he wouldn't see playing time. He's going to hold his own from here on in.

I was very impressed with Newman's play, aside from the free throw shooting. He will certainly be a huge factor in this team's success.

Now that you bring up KMac ( or kimBALL as the Bonnie play by play man called him), we finally got to see the player that was hinted at in the WVU game at the dance 2 years ago. We got glimpses last year, particularly in the Colgate last ;30 second comeback, but his physical condition prevented him from showing the kind of domination that the Press Virginia game suggested. We saw it last night! That Kimbal Mackenzie could be the PL POY.

Newman is getting a lot of grief for his foul shooting. 4-7 isn’t great but was better than Moore’s 2-5 and Toomer’s 2-6.

Apologies to Newman. I wasn't trying to downplay his important contribution. I was praising Kimbal for grabbing the reigns and being the scorer after our graduation losses.

Maybe those Bona kids could have used that guy who used to post here. You know, the one who viewed himself as a worthy "opponent" to CJ McCollum.

I have posted this before, but one of my neighbors is a top NCAA ref-does the Top 20 and NCAA finals games. Though the years, we have gotten many laughs (and a few Bison tears) for calls he has never seen or heard of before. He has no idea how they do quality control in the Patriot League and has a few thoughts on how refs are picked here I wont repeat.

Good call by who ever picked the Bonnies as the first game. Gave Bison everything they needed for the future year - competitive game, win in hostile/away crowd, etc. Some years I wonder how they set the schedule but this game showed some thought and a bit of luck.

I could not figure out how to cancel my trial ESPN+ subscription online. So, I read the terms of use, and I was able to cancel by sending an email to support@espnplus.com.

They make it easy to signup but difficult to cancel!

I kept mine for now, because I figure we are going to end up there again. It also appears that ESPN has moved much if not all of theie repeat telecasts to Plus. Certainly for ESPN5 anyway. BTW first game in Hawaii vs RI will be on ESPN3.

Yes, that's what the La Salle schedule says.
