Time to just re-name the school Wharton University and instead of "Let's Go Quakers", we'll chant "Open for Business"

This will go as well as when they renamed the Queensboro Bridge the Ed Koch Bridge or the New Tappan Zee Bridge the Mario Cuomo Bridge.

We'll still just be calling it the Palestra, no matter what the official name is.

I feel sorry for the public address folks who will be force fed a continual stream of MacQuarie and Quaker items. Quite a mouthful.

The building name has not changed---they just sold the naming rights to the court (and scoreboard, apparently)

If we're going to name the court, I would rather it had been named for a coach or player who has made a significant contribution to the program over its history.

Mrs Nation and I honeymooned in Sydney. Macquarie Point is one of the most scenic spots in that very scenic city. Had some lovely walks and picnics there.

I know this sort of thing might have been inevitable, but MacQuarie is definitely not my first choice of local firms to get in bed with. Hope this is a short term arrangement.

If they had just made this the Esformes Court back in 2015, it would have saved everyone affiliated with the program a lot of heartache.

Would be interesting to know how much we sold out for? I assume its a pretty significant amount which can go towards getting this program where we all want it to be, high mid major with a change to do some damage to the brackets

The article seems to imply that it was for more than basketball - hope that this is at least a 7 figure amount for a number of years.

We didn't sell out. Just ask Grace. We were just waiting for the right "fit." Thank goodness this great company came along to save the day.

I'd love to know where this money goes to help (haven't practice facilities and the entire sports complex been updated?). Mark me as a cynic, but all I got when reading the story was how this makes good resume fodder for an AD...Are we really that desperate for funds? After a title year no less?

With abject apologies (attended by the obligatory bowing and scraping), I find this to be incredibly offensive: if “branding” is a predicate to “raising the required funds to compete”, why not sell the name of the institution to the highest (or most robustly aggressive) bidder)? Why not festoon the uniforms of the athletes with advertisements? Why not pay athletes for sponsor tattoos? Really, where does one stop and ask “is this too much, in the grand scheme of matters?”. At what point is one’s identity determined by the logo on one’s clothing, in contrast to one’s history? Are we game enough to ask these uncomfortable questions? Knowing arrows (some flaming) might be coming my way, do we really want to stumble, blindly, down this road? Just sayin’

Penn Athletics has another sponsor, AXIA Time.

According to the article at the DP, Penn alumnus and Penn Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee John Kanaras founded AXIA Time this year and has quickly become partners with all eight schools in the Ivy League.

Not sure about the other schools, but Penn has created a new name for this weekend's Homecoming football game.

https://www.thedp.com/article/2018/11/penn- athleti...

- AXIA Time will be giving away a watch at select Penn home athletic events throughout the year. The company will have its first giveaway at the Palestra on Friday night during Penn men’s basketball’s home opener against Rice. The next day, another AXIA timepiece will be gifted to a fan at Penn football’s homecoming matchup, now called Homecoming: Presented by AXIA Time, against Harvard.

Furthermore, during some of Penn’s home conference games, the Palestra will have an AXIA Time table, where fans can try on watches from the University Timepieces collections and enter for a chance to win one of their own. -

Is it just me, or are they rolling out new sponsors at a clip of one per week?

Why has the Ivy League, of all things, capitulated to this corporate nonsense?

From what I've heard in other fora, Penn Athletics does not get subsidized to the same extent that some of the other Ivies do, so they may need everything they can get.

I wouldn't go to Rosengarten when I attended Penn. Why would I do so now?

I did however, go to the McLelland sub-sub-sub basement to study. That was true purgatory.

Speaking of this, AJ was on the twitter machine fighting for a very good cause. He makes some strong points. What could they be thinking?

  • Quote:
So @pennathletics sold out Palestra floor, I was part of huge successful fundraising campaign, yet there are budget cuts not allowing @penncheer and @PennBand to stay in hotels on our league games. Only reason band can go is they make own accommodations. Where’s the money going?

Besides the actual teams there’s nothing more “college sports” than band and cheerleaders.. especially since they are among our biggest supporters. Also weird that this is new this year only after we raised all of this money.

A minor clarification to the above: if you go looking in today's paper, it isn't there because it just went online today. Might be in tomorrow's (hopefully it will be, but it's not my decision of course).

So we still have no idea what actually happened with the band and cheerleaders. It's really all about being there for more women's games? I have to assume some folks in these parts know more.

Former AD Steve Bilsky weighs in on the Macquarie Court controversy.

It does not seem that Bilsky approves of Calhoun's decision.

https://www.thedp.com/article/2018/11/steve -bilsky...

Below are some excerpts:

- It is not an exaggeration to say the Palestra court is sacred to legions of former players and fans throughout the Philadelphia region. We all know the storied history that has enabled the Palestra to be referred to as the Cathedral of College Basketball. To place a corporate name on its floor tarnishes that image and detracts from the pureness and spectacle that has made the Palestra experience unduplicated. The Palestra is unlike any other arena in the country and keeping it unique adds to its reputation. -

- I assume that the University’s senior leadership participated in the decision to name Macquarie Court. Since Penn is fortunate to have outstanding senior leaders who do understand and are sensitive to institutional history, it is surprising that, in this case, dollars seemed to outweigh sentiment and tradition.

No one knows more than I do about the challenge of funding an immense enterprise like Penn Athletics and Recreation. In fact, I was approached several times about naming the Palestra floor. Once, a senior University official approached me about a potential donor who was considering making a $25 million gift to Penn, the caveat being it had to include the naming of the Palestra. I admit I was initially tempted, but ultimately told the official that the Palestra was not for sale. -

- The Palestra has hosted more college basketball games than any other arena. Franklin Field was the country’s first two-tiered stadium and the oldest stadium still operating for football games. The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. We are so lucky that these treasures all belong to Penn.

However, with these blessings come responsibilities. The Palestra court, Franklin Field turf, and Penn Relays name should never be shared with any corporate entity. Otherwise, we’ll be like everyone else. Is this the outcome we desire?

I do not want to see our marketing and advancement efforts handcuffed. I’m sure there are other ways to utilize the Palestra and Franklin Field in revenue enhancement strategies, that don’t come at the expense of cheapening our classic venues. -

I'm not crazy about this court-naming decision, but I really don't want to hear ANYTHING from Steve Bilksy. If he had a shred of decency, he would just shut up and go away. And if he were standing next to me right now, I would tell him that to his overly tanned face.
