Figure it would be good to have one thread for this. Max Martz had 27 points as host Upper Arlington (2-1) downed Springfield (2-2). Martz made 10 of 11 free throws. Martz had a strong showing at the Ohio Nike Shootout earlier in the month. Details are behind a paywall unfortunately. Jordan Dingle scored 28 vs. Perkioman, including three 3-pointers. Lucas Monroe named 2nd team all-Southeastern PA in the Inquirer's preseason report. |

Max had 26 points in their loss and I think 12 or so in a blowout win in which my guess is he did not play a whole lot. So a good start for him. |

Will Martz be playing the 2 at penn? If so, picture the backcourt of Mashburn Jr and Martz lighting it up. |

I'm going to try and watch Lucas Monroe in the next few weeks. The last time I did that it was watching Jamal Lewis and I came away blown away by Josh Hart instead. Hoping it's not a repeat with Dixon doing it all. |

Martz is like a small-ball '4'. Picture something of a Matt MacDonald except he can actually shoot. He might play some '3' later on in his Ivy career. But he's definitely not a '2', especially with all the other actual guards on the roster (Betley, Washington, Dingle, Monroe, Charles). |

Thanks for the insight, Josh. Glad you're still posting here. I certainly like the idea of Martz playing the 4. It helps that the true guards are tall. |

They're playing my high school and soon to be new school district again, Upper Dublin. It's at UD. The UD girls came back from down 17 with 7 to go (I love the symmetry of those numbers, don't you Palestra?) to beat the Abington girls last night, but I have to think Abington is favored big time. |

If you want to see Abington basketball this year and get a somewhat-honest evaluation of their talent, don't go see them against Upper Dublin, lol. Starters might be sitting the whole fourth quarter for that one. Go see them play P-W at Abington on Jan. 4. Or Cheltenham on Jan. 15. Or Sankofa on Jan. 26 (at West Chester). Assuming their MaxPreps schedule is correct. |

Upper Dublin was definitely outmatched but if they didn’t shoot free throws like Penn they would have had the lead with 3 mins left in the first half. Instead, Lucas and Dixon put on an end of half show to lead Abington on a 14-0 run the last 2:15. I’ll start with Nova-bound Dixon. He is just massive and if he gets himself into college shape by sophomore year he will make an impact. These hs kids had no chance when he puts his head down and he has a very sweet lefty stroke which he used to sink multiple 3s. Onto Lucas. The first word that comes to my mind is athletic. I only wish you guys could see what he attempted to do to a poor UD kid. Out of nowhere he just takes off in the lane, flies over him, and almost pulls off the posterization. The dunk came up short but he went to the line. He also just missed two other alley oop attempts but he certainly plays above the rim. His handle is solid and he found himself bringing up the ball a good deal even though they have smaller ball handlers. Abington likes to go so that’s probably why he had it so much, and he and Dixon don’t sub out. I didn’t see him break anyone down one on one but he’s quick and certainly can finish on the break. He favors the left but he did finish one nicely with his right hand high off glass. I believe he was about 9-10 from the free throw line so that was comforting. He has a very confident lefty stroke. However I did not see him attempt any real jumpers. There might have been one but I dont remember it. He was also a load to handle on the o-boards and at one point took control of the team and told his guys to slow down. He had at least one block but not much else could be learned defensively vs that team. Overall I came away impressed with his athleticism and think he can contribute if he has a jump shot. I told him after the game to remind Eric about what happened last week. |

Looks like Dingle and Charles are off to a great start (and Dingle’s team is quite good). Also saw that MLL had a good game in a close loss with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Good game after a slower start for him it seems. Personally love that we have a Philly area kid and 2 NJ kids in this class. |

That’s been Steve’s blueprint. Recruit the greater philly area first and get kids who value the Big 5 and the Palestra. He feels like he can build great teams with high quality kids who are local and get what it means to be a Quaker |

#10- What I admire most about your Coach Donahue is his humility; he's worked hard, consistently; clearly amassed a ton of knowledge in 35 years of coaching; but doesn't need to be acknowledged as the smartest guy in the room wherever he goes. I only wish you'd take that blueprint you write about and forward it to Jim Engles at Columbia, along with some of your personalized instructions and points of emphasis, starred. Any school MUST do the best job possible in the recruitment of student athletes within the geographic region of the school's location. If your school's in New York City and you can't/won't/or refuse to recruit New York City kids, whatever the reasons; then just get the hell out of there and give some interested party a chance to do the job right! |

Had a chance to see Jordan play recently and his game is progressing nicely. In speaking with him let just say their is NO doubt if he wanted to reopen his recruitment( he doesn’t) that he would have multiple power 5 offers. In respect to Coach who I really don’t know nor have I spoken with in years it appears in talking to some of the HS coaches and recruits aside from the obvious allure of Penn the school and it’s basketball tradition he is looking for position-less athletes and shooters. I know Jordan was very much sold on coming in and proving himself as a pg but with the flexibility to play and defend multiple spots on the floor |

Pleasure to add any value here. I think the concept of position less recruiting in general is taking off and will be more and more. Their will always be the pure pg like a Cole Anthony but the kids are so athletic now and honestly slightly fundamentally poor. At this highest level a kid like Precious Achicwa is being told he will getting prepped to be a one and dine by showing his versatility by playing the 2-5 which enhances his draft appeal. In the case of Jordan it was very appealing because he is still growing as a player and it gives him the ability to see the floor early at multiple spots. I think increasing his teams overall athleticism and shooting is a great idea for coach and I think it shows in the quality of player he’s been able to bring in |

From reading a lot of NBA commentary, it seems like bigs being able to defend the pick and roll (especially on switches) is now a huge deal. So any coach who can show that he can teach that (and give a big player chances to prove that during games) to might have a major selling point in recruiting centers and power forwards. |

I saw Lucas Monroe play in Abington's win over Plymouth Whitemarsh. First the numbers: By my unofficial count, Lucas was 3-11 from the floor, 5 for 7 on foul shots, 3 offensive rebounds, 2 defensive rebounds, a blocked shot, 3 steals and two assists. He had no turnovers, but lucked out of two turnovers when bad passes ended up, after deflections, in the hands of his teammates. My opinions are substantially similar to that of Quakers03, as posted by him two weeks ago. 1. Lucas can jump out of the building. 2. He is taller than our current guards which will enable him to switch on defense without ending up in size mismatches. 3. He is left handed, handles the ball relatively well and exercises a leadership role on his team. He did not attempt many difficult passes. 4. Of his 11 field goal attempts 10 were from inside the paint and the 11th was a short, baseline jump shot. He did not successfully finish most of his drives to the basket, partly because of the presence of McLeod, P/W's 7 foot plus, Florida State bound, center, partly because he did not draw foul calls he deserved, and partly because of his own failures. 5. Lucas did not attempt a single outside shot and affirmatively passed up several open three point looks. I am advised that learning to shoot from outside is recognized to be a skill that will have to be developed after Lucas arrives at Penn. |

Some unfortunate news on the recruit front... It looks like Max Martz is injured. I saw a vague mention in a tweet, so I asked the guy talking about the game and he said: “Unfortunately Max is injured- back. What I heard is that a guy came under him(while he was in the air- nearly undercut), causing him to land hard(or awkward), and injuring his back. He is using crutches....not sure of the (level of)seriousness. Hopefully his recovery goes well.†Not a lot to go on and 3rd hand so take with a grain of salt, but hopefully isn’t something serious. |

Good news on recruiting front: Jordan Dingle had a good couple of games with these shout outs from his coach on Twitter: “Blair 65 - Hun 50. @Jdingle25 with 17 points and Dexter Akanno with 12 points and three charges. Blair moves to 9-2 (1-0)†“Blair 53 - Pope John 43. Impressed with how hard the young PJ team competed tonight. 20+ for @Jdingle25 and @jabri404 Nice floor game by four year senior @dirkdaniels11 #CauseOverSelf†Looks like Jonah Charles had 13 points and 7 assists in his last game, a big win: http://highschoolsports.nj.com/news/article/-89315... |

I was able to see Jordan Dingle play against the Hun School on January 9. Jordan is well built, bigger than our current guards. Although he played the point for Blair, he is a good athlete, capable of playing either as the point or the off guard. The long distance shots were not falling that afternoon, but the form looked good. Jordan's ball handling was not tested by any type of press and he tended to take plays off (hustle and effort wise) once his team had a comfortable lead. |

Pat Lawless watched Dingle play and hit the twitter machine: I just watched Blair Academy vs. St. Benedict’s Prep | Top performances came from ‘20 Jabri Abdur-Rahim (23 points), ‘19 UPenn commit Jordan Dingle (22 points) & ‘20 C.J. Wilcher (19 points). Blair Academy won 74-61. Thought Jabri Abdur-Rahim and Jordan Dingle were both great today. Abdur-Rahim played physical and was great around the basket. Dingle did what he does best, which is hit shots and play sound basketball. He also impressed me with how he has developed as an athlete. |

Looks like Max Martz played for the first time in a month from the back injury tonight (only scored 5 points in a loss so might not be back to 100%). I’m wondering if MLL got injured earlier this week. Looks like scored only 1 point in a mid week game and then didn’t play last game. Don’t see anything about an injury but seems a little odd. |

Can read and see more here: https://jerseysportszone.com/blair-bucs-basketball ... - Destroyed Lawrenceville Prep in tournament this weekend and Dingle was tied as leading scorer with 17 points - Beat a very good Westtown team in tournament game this weekend 50-44 and Dingle was leading scorer with I think 13 points |

MLL with a very nice game in a close/exciting finish where NMH beat Cushing 82-80. MLL with 14 points (7 of 7 shooting), 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist and 0 turnovers. He scored the winning basket on an alley oop (after having a put back dunk not long before) and also looks like he challenged the last shot by Cushing that was a miss. Some nice clips on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheHoopHustle/status/ 109076888... Per MaxPreps he is shooting 68% on FGs on the year (9.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 2.9 blocks per game averages). |

The thing that makes me optimistic about this incoming class is not just the WOM on the individual players, but the fact that it is a big class. With five well-regarded players coming in, it's extremely likely that at least a couple of them will turn out very well. |

Had a chance to see the Blair game. Started off with an ejection for a kid spitting on another and after falling behind Blair scored what seemed like 1000 points in second half. Blair has a pg Jaylen Blakes who was sensational. Good student, kid im sure Penn will reach out to but he will get a lot of interest. They also have jabir Abdur Rahim(Sharif's son) who I will be shocked if he doesnt end up top 10 in his class. As for Jordan his game is maturing nicely. He is really filling out and displayed great intensity, leadership and athletic ability. His shot is improving and he has the ability to be an elite defender. As I told him the tools right now are slightly ahead of the package but hes a young kid with a great work ethic, I suspect should his desire continue he will be a great one at Penn. He also happens to be a great young man that will both make his family and community proud |

I watched a few videos of Blair's team. They seem like a fantastic team. I don't think we have had a guard with Dingle's physicality at any point I remember. He seemed to have a pretty good handle, pretty good shot, and pretty good vision, although he didn't dominate the games in any one of these areas. He just did it by playing with poise in what appears to be a great system with great players. I'm pretty hopeful that he turns out to be an early contributor to the team. |

Watching the latest video of Dingle on youtube, I see a lot of similarities to the game Darnell Foreman developed at Penn, and we certainly can use that. We also have another guard from New Jersey coming in, and he has the reputation of being a superb three point shooter. Watch out for Max Martz, too, because, from the videos I have seen, it appears that he has great court savvy and can really stroke it, reminding one of Ryan Betley. Somewhere along the line, however, we also have to find a power forward on the recruiting trail. As for what's left of this year, we need a sprinkling of pixie dust, and for Bryce Washington and Michael Wang (or Jarrod Simmons, if not Wang), to really step up this weekend and next. |

I like the look of Martz from his videos, although he seems like he may have high overlap with Wang in skills. While I won't complain about having more players like that, it could impact his marginal contribution (or Wang's) to the team over the course of his career. On a Donahue position-less team, they could possibly play side by side but I think such a lineup would give up too much defensively against either bigger and faster teams. |

When he challenges shots he goes straight up with his arms up. Most often HS players don't move their feet enough and their arms aren't vertical when they defend. What I saw of Martz, he does a better job than most HS players at moving his feet and staying vertical when challenging shots. |

Hard for me to tell much from highlights online but this from his coach Casey after their big win over previously undefeated rival in last few weeks: Martz, who didn't play in the first game because of multiple injuries, was a difference-maker. The Pennsylvania recruit, who missed 10 games, scored 29 points, including one clutch shot after another when Coffman appeared to be making a charge. "Max, to me, is the best player in the state of Ohio," Casey said. "Name me a guy more valuable and more complete. He can defend ever position and can hurt you from any spot on the floor. Even more important, he's an unbelievable leader. Having him back for the rematch certainly was a big difference. We knew we'd give them a better game this time around." I don’t expect him to be able to guard Bryce Aiken, but if he can defend all 5 spots in high school that’s a great start headed into college. I know folks on the board have looked at him as stretch 4, but at 6’6†he seems more suited to the 3 (and everywhere has him listed as SF). Shame he got injured and missed 10 games mid season or I’d bet he’d be up for even more Ohio honors end of season. |

He also happens to be a great young man that will both make his family and community proud Always love to have your insight on the board and great to hear about Jordan. Looks like the kind of kid who has the potential to be All Ivy if he keeps putting in the work and honestly with Woods graduating I could see him getting solid minutes next year if he can defend with that strength. Just curious - did you catch much of Jonah Charles this year? It looks like he stepped up his senior season (certainly hit a lot of 3s), but wondering what else you might think. |

Shame he got injured and missed 10 games mid season or I’d bet he’d be up for even more Ohio honors end of season. It wasn't that he didn't perform well in the video I saw. The issue for me is that he looked like he was towering over his opponents. He didn't seem to be playing against the same caliber of opponents as Dingle. That makes it harder to predict how he'll do in the league. He looked solid for a HS player. His stroke was sweet. But I would neither have called him a speedster or a physical player and today's Ivy frontlines are tough. It isn't at all an insult to say he reminded me of Wang. He also reminded me Max Rothschild when he was a Freshman. Rothschild was highly skilled as a Freshman, but neither fast enough or strong enough to be a leading Ivy player. He has emerged by massively improving on the strength side. Martz seems to me that he could be ahead of Wang and Rothschild in HS, and if he improves on a path like those two, he will be a contributor. |

I had the same impression of Martz--also from the video it looks like he is playing against a lower level of competition than Dingle. Glad to have them both! Dingle looks like he could be special. Strong but with a nice shooting touch also. |

Google Jonah Charles and check out the 5 minute video against Seton Hall Prep. He may be the best three point shooter among our recruits. He has a very sweet shot. |

The next game should be an easy win for Rutgers Prep. Then it gets tough. Wildwood Catholic & Trenton Catholic are legitimate with a few Div I players. |

In some positive news... Both Jonah Charles and Max Martz played well as their teams both moved on in playoffs with wins tonight. Max Martz led all scorers with 20 points in D1 Sectional Finals game. Jonah Charles scored 21 points (2 3’s, 5 FTs) with 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a big win in the quarter finals of state tournament. Next game is away at #1 seed Rainey so tough battle ahead. Lucas Monroe and Abington look like they play tomorrow as will MLL and NMH. |

I mentioned the (true) South Jersey powers, but Ranney has two of the top 10-20 players in the country. |

Was out this afternoon - did any one get to catch this game? I see on Twitter NMH won and Harvard bound Chris Ledlum was MVP with 31 points. Don’t see any word on MLL on Twitter from the game. Online I see that in yesterday’s semi-final, MLL have a balanced game of 10 points (80% shooting), 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocks and only 2 turnovers. Also looks like Lucas Monroe’s Abington won District Championship yesterday and he scored 18 (Eric Dixon, Nova commit had 38). |

MLL had 9 points. He only took 4 shots. He also had 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. He fouled out but I don't know at what point of the game. |

MLL was 3-4 from the field and 3-5 from the foul line. He fouled out with less than a minute to go, with his team safely in control. He sat for a significant portion of the first half after his first two fouls. |

Rutgers Prep lost to Ranney by 14. Got blown out in the first quarter; closed to @5 at the half; but got no closer. Jonah Charles had 9 on three threes; but Ranney's 6'5 5* guards were dominant. |

Ledlum is on a different level. I dont involve myself in ranking but their is NO chance their are 50 HS kids better than him. He plays so hard all the time. |

Yeah, didn't want to divert attention from MLL, but I agree about Ledlum. I mean, NMH has good talent, but Brewster is loaded. After winning two of three vs. Brewster including the NEPSAC title, Ledlum should be a Top 50 kid. |

He has been absolutely dominant all season, and impressively is also efficient from what I saw (FG % was very good considering he shoots from outside). I’m excited to have MLL, no doubt, but clearly Ledlum is on a different level. Will be interesting to see how they both translate to college. Hope Coach Donahue keeps recruiting hard, and seeing what that kid is putting up hopefully gives even more motivation since we will be up against him. I really like our overall class, but hard to argue against Ledlum being best prospect at this point. |

Whether Ledlum is a top 50 recruit is debatable but there is very little debate that he will likely be the top Ivy recruit entering this year. Nevertheless, it makes little sense to talk about him in the same sentence as MLL. They are very different players with different skill sets who will play very different roles on their college teams. MLL is a rim protecter and a rebounder with good finishing skills near the hoop. He actually is the type of player we could use this year. AJ has a much broader skill set, but likely would have been even more successful with another long natural big who complements him down low. It seems clear that Max has struggled since the back injury. No one tries harder and he's a net plus, but I wouldn't exactly call him a rim protector and he has had trouble elevating and finishing. I think Harvard got a great player, but I think we got a guy who will really be a big plus in the Penn program going forward. |

Apologies if my post in any way was perceived as a comparison or put down of MLL. Hes a terrific prospect and I think he will be a huge part of Penn's future. My Ledlum remark was meant as a stand alone comment, sorry for the miscommunication. |

Wasn’t directed at your post. Just making the point that these are different players and that MLL fills a major Penn need that the other guy would not. I think we have a number of 3/4 types either in the program or joining that fit Steve’s system. I think I’m more curious how Jelani looks when he returns and how Dingle, Monroe and Charles adjust because we graduate Antonio and Jake after this season. |

Regardless, Ledlum and MLL are done. Just lost in the National Prep Championship quarters to Scotland Prep. Heck of a season for those guys - really overachieved given the talent some of the best schools in New England had relative to what NMH had. |

MLL had only 8 points on 3 for 3 shooting and a couple FTs in that game but he had 6 blocks. You can kind of tell the role he'll be asked to play at Penn |

I think Lucas Monroe might be last recruit still playing. This past Saturday, Abington won the first round of states, led by Monroe’s 24 points and 16 rebounds. Some nice video on Twitter you can check out there, but the gist is that he is really athletic so a lot of dunks and alley oops. I really like this class for both 1) upping athleticism across the board and 2) bringing a lot of 3 point shooting potential. |

Looks like Lucas Monroe scored 10 points in low scoring upset loss (55-51) in second round of states and his season is over. Tough part of it is they’d actually already beat that team 3X in a row... this season, which is crazy. Tough break but he had a great season and looking forward to seeing him play at Penn. |

goes to show it is hard to beat a team 3 times in a row, 4 is really tough. GO QUAKERS! |
