The Lobo Lair is their main board. Now, I know they have a proud history and high expectations and all, but wow; they're at .500, they've been over .500 the last three seasons and are five years removed from a 27-7 team, and yet they sound like us in 2014. People are already talking about getting rid of the coach, who's been there for 1.5 seasons and apparently didn't inherit much from the previous regime.

I will say that even if they're not that great this year, winning in the Pit, particularly coming off exams, would still be a major accomplishment. Also, the official name of the place, Dreamstyle Arena, is one of the few decent corporate arena names. Pity it's not Dreamtime, though.

The Pit is a tough place to play. I'm not expecting an easy game.

New Mexico is a 3 point shooting team with length. Need to build a wall all around the arc while our bigs handle theirs under the hoop.

They don't seem to play much D. Seem to be exploitable on that end.

Hope to see a big game from Brodeur.

Albuquerque is at altitude (higher than Denver.) I remember flying into Albuquerque and having a bit of difficulty catching my breath.

I wonder how much the difficulty of playing in The Pit is due to that.

first off, the board is better than using record. "FIVE HUNDRED"? What. You can't trot that crap out here. New Mexico in 12-13 and 13-14 was 23 and 33 in Ken Pom. In years ended 15, 16, 17, 18. They were between 100 and 125. This year they are 167. They didn't panic early enough. This is how programs die.

I remember losing a close game at the Pit in the first year of the Allen - Maloney team. I listened to it on XPN at P38's house, but it was very late at night and he was passed out on the couch. We got totally screwed by the refs, but still nearly pulled it off. I seem to recall a Tim Krug bucket in the final seconds that was waved off for an offensive foul or a phantom walk, but the details are a little shaky. That was a very good New Mexico team that won its conference and went to the NCAAs.

Wow, I just found the DP article on that game. We had the ball with the score tied and 33 seconds left. A New Mexico player landed on top of Krug and knocked him off of his feet, but the refs called traveling. NM then launched a 22 footer at the buzzer to win by 3. UGH!

Dunphy diplomatically commented that the refs called a walk, so it must have been a walk. Barry Pierce angrily said that he saw a foul on Krug. Man, did I love that team. Nobody played with more fire than Barry Pierce, who truly hated his opponents.

I plead guilty to analysis while train riding and not having great internet. For my community service, let's continue the Pomeroy series back further:

11-12: 20
10-11: 47
09-10: 43
08-09: 43
07-08: 32
06-07: 139
05-06: 115
04-05: 31
03-04: 115
02-03: 187
01-02: 92

Pomeroy ends there, but if you look at their history before that, one has to conclude that the major successes have been more aberration than the norm; basically, they were good when Alford (who seems to have reached his level of incompetence at UCLA, by the way) and Bliss were there, and not so much otherwise. I have to admit this surprised me; I guess the Pit's fearsome reputation has to do more with the fanatical support (and apparently NM fans are really devoted) they get there than with the actual results of the program.

At any rate, what i was gently trying to suggest earlier is that maybe the Lobos fans's expectations are a bit inflated relative to what the program's actual situation can bear. The Pit, while still a classic venue, is not as much of a draw as it used to be, given that almost all upper-echelon teams play in pro-style arenas these days. The state economy is not doing very well, and the athletic department has had financial difficulties (I can't find substantiating material, but some of the remarks on their board lead me to think that this is true of the school as a whole as well.) Of course, this isn't unique to them; even without the AI and fin aid issues, Penn very likely would have declined in the 80's and 90's because of things like the Big East, other teams having better arenas and TV contracts, etc.

I would also say that one needs to distinguish between concern and panic. It was correct to be concerned about where Penn hoops was going under Miller, but panic got us Allen. Not saying that the current coach is necessarily going to get NM back to the promised land, but given what he inherited, which apparently wasn't much, but it's still a bit early to hit the eject button.

UNM ties it at 24 after a 3, an airball by JD and an easy Lobos layup.

The crowd and announcers are treating this like its a Tournament game.

It's hard to see Penn staying in this one (hope I'm wrong).

UNM 29 Penn 28 with 3:57 to go. Penn will have the ball coming of the TO.

AJ made a strong layup with guys all over him. When the refs called the foul on UNM, I thought the announcers were going to have a heart attack. These guys are more biased than Vince.

Some thoughts -

Lobo coach is bizarre - he spends more time on the court than the players - and that was BEFORE he stormed out to pick up a well-deserved technical.

Still no audio for me - I checked speakers, Otto, and they're on - so I'm spared listening to the homers.

UNM hit some incredibly long threes to get back in the game. Hopefully, that will not continue. AJ has been magnificent. How many fouls do he and Wang have?

Wow! That was some half.

I cannot believe Penn is up 42-38. It's impressive that they took a huge shot from the Lobos and came back to retake the lead.

Penn has 4 guys with 2 fouls - AJ, Michael, Antonio and Jake. Fortunately, the Lobos have two guys with 3 and two with 2.

Penn is doing a good job forcing TO (Lobos have 11). When UNM does actually hold onto the ball, they are shooting 57% (8-14) from two and 56% (5-9) from three.

These announcers and this wacky broadcast seem like they would be more at home in the movie Slap Shot

It also sounds like their coach was chirping at Steve for telling the officials to get him back in the box. It's amateur hour.

Two straight 3's give New Mexico the lead. AJ thought he got hit after he couldn't finish a layup and they ran down with numbers. Killer.

Final score: 75-65.

Wang went 1-2 from the line on one possession, then they declined to foul on our final possession.

Brodeur with 20 and 9. Wang with 19 and 9.

Woods was scoreless, fouled out, but led the team with 6 assists.

Penn is constructing an historic OOC record. Neither Yale nor Harvard has shown that either can play with the Quakers. Barring injury the Quakers may threaten to do something I did not believe could be accomplished after the Tigers' magical run in 2017: 16-0! Make no mistake about it, this is a very special team. The Quakers clearly belong in the Top 20. Running the IL table should give them at least an 8 seed.

Just ridiculously impressive. Penn teams that we thought were much more talented ALWAYS lost games like this. I think you have to go back to the early '70s to find a Penn team that won road games like this. And this was a character game--no Max, Antonio not having any feel, we played only 7 players at altitude.....and we led virtually start to finish in one of the toughest road venues in the nation with a psychotic opposing coach. We miss FTs, are not a very good rebounding team and have no PG who can really control the ball (although that Goodman pickup and escape with the behind the back dribble was awesome), and weren't shooting that great tonight, but we still won by 10. We just continually get better shots than our opponents. On to Toledo and Max Klinger.

It was a good solid win, especially since we didn’t play particularly well. But that may say more about UNM, which could end up outside the top 200 by season’s end if they keep playing as poorly as they have. This is already their 4th home loss of the season in the supposedly impregnable Pit.

I only started watching around 5:30 pm EST, but for me the biggest takeaway was Mike Wang being able to play a key role even when his outside shot is not falling.

His height was bothering UNM down low when playing defense. That bodes well for Ivy season.

This may be inappropriate self-praise but I want to note that of the five Penn alums there (not counting player families), THREE of us were from the Class of 1971 - Bill Waas who came from San Francisco and Moe Szporn and me from Philadelphia. Shout out to Gary Bressler and Paul Chrystie who also traveled from Philadelphia.

Another great win!

It's a shame that the video ran out before the final buzzer. It would have been good to hear the announcers discuss the Penn win.

I thought they were done when UNM made its run in the first half and three fifths of the starting lineup each had two quick fouls. Very glad to be proven wrong. Since the 0-6 start to league play in '17, this team continues to amaze.

In the 2nd half, the Quakers went 2-7 from three (two nice shots from Bryce) and 5-9 from the line, but shot 11-21 from two. The Lobos meanwhile went 2-13 from three, 3-8 from the line and 9-25 from two.

Btw, KP now has Penn at #99! (Yale is #98 and Harvard is #100)

I'm watching again too and that 3 from Bryce at 61-61 was a man 3. 15 left on the clock and he just confidently stepped up at the top of the key and drilled it. Then, after Devon clearly gets fouled, he follows up the miss for 2 and they never looked back. I know we expected freshman contributions but these two are something.

An update on Max's injury from the DP:

https://www.thedp.com/article/2018/12/penn- mens-ba...

- In the meantime, the Red and Blue await the return of Rothschild from a nagging back injury.

“We shut [Max] down for the last nine days hoping that it would help and I think he’s gotten better,” Donahue said. “Our goal is to see how he feels after Christmas and obviously get him healthy for the league.” -

Max would have enhanced what was already a significant inside advantage on this game. As it is, this team has a special ability to adapt to game conditions, personnel losses and matchups. Part of it is the versatility of the roster, part is coaching/tactics/executio n, and part is fearless relentless attitude. It’s all coming together beautifully.
