Ended this season with a really great banquet, honored the Senior class , the winningest team in Patriot League history. To show how far the program has come since Coach Roussell has become head coach, The Terrace Room was filled with team , coaches, parents , athletic staff , and many fans, these young ladies have established a tradttion, on the campus and the local area, Sojka a fun place to be for really good Women's Basketball. The new season will see the team playing a Holliday Tournament in Puerto Rico.

I wasn't able to attend the banquet. Glad there was a good turnout. It's good they're finally getting more recognition from the community. It's clear the seniors put in a ton of work to get where they are. Hopefully, the culture has been established and we continue to see sustained success.

The full FSU game is now available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQAuawXgBY4

It was a shame this one got away, but I have a feeling they'll be back.

Thanks for the report. Did they say which Puerto Rico tournament they are doing? There is one around Thanksgiving and one a few days before Christmas. Not a bad road trip.

Excerpts from Matt Saylor on twitter:

- "team set records for games (34), wins (28), winning % (82.4), scoring margin (+ 14.6 ppg), points (2462), FGM (875), FGA (1905), 3FGM (283), 3FGA (750), 3FG% (37.7), assists (529), blocks (147), and fouls (624)"

- "FG% (45.9) and steals (307) are second best in school history"

- "Individual single-season top marks for Bucknell WBB this year: Kaitlyn Slagus sets new record with 57.9 FG% and her 51 blocks are 6th most. Abby Kapp's 74 3FGM is the second best total and 171 3FGA is third. Ellie Mack's 84.2 FT% is 6th."

And a few notes from Saylor on the Class of 2019:

"Class of 2019 - 102-30 record (.773 win %), a Bucknell and PL record for wins. Team was 57-6 (.905) at Sojka Pavilion, including 42-3 (.933) against league opponents. Team went 64-8 (.889) in PL regular season games. 3 reg.-season, 2 tournament titles."

Pretty impressive!

One more stat specific to Aaron Roussell. Prior to his arrival, the most wins in any four-year period in program history were 70 by the Class of 2009 (2006-2009).

Roussell just wrapped up his 7th season meaning he has had 4 years where all of the players were his recruits. The win totals for those four cohorts are 74, 86, 92 and 102. In fact, next year's seniors have already amassed 77 wins, giving them the 4th most ever.

the bottom line, the guy can recruit and he knows how to coach these young ladies when he gets them on campus. Let's hope Bucknell rewards his efforts, we are fortunate, as the guy has to be a rising star in NCAA Women's Basketball circles.

Hate to lose him. With Hardt as the Richmond AD, I knew this was a possibility.

As for a replacement, the one obvious name would be Mike Lane, who was Roussell's top assistant for all but the last year of his tenure. But Lane just took over the NJIT program, so it's unclear if he would leave or if the buyout would be too great. In any case, there should be a lot of good candidates sending in their resumes.

It’s a shame we can’t afford to keep a great coach like Aaron Roussell. IMO, the current administration is slowly eroding athletics instead of enhancing.

IIRC Dave Paulsen almost doubled his salary to go to GMU. Any idea what the terms are for Coach Roussell? Given his success, leaving is not a surprise, and for him, the timing was right. The relationship with Hardt had to be a factor.

Hope the process goes quickly and that the new coach can retain both recruits and present players. The program has an excellent foundation.

Is this a reference to the new AD, or higher up the chain?

Definitely a reference to higher up the chain. We don’t seem to reward success and stability, as in DP and Coach Roussell. Also look at lack of scholarships in other men’s sports, 5th year option, etc..

Agree. Fwiw, Roussell was given a new contract less than nine months ago - which presumably was all Bucknell was willing to pay for success in women's basketball. I would have hoped at that time that BU put in a significant buyout provision, but I don't know if they are as proactive in that area as many schools are.
Richmond clearly has more resources than Bucknell, but the gap is not that wide where a significant buyout requirement in Year 1 might have kept him. In any event, Richmond's commitment to athletics certainly is greater.

I wonder if BU at some point during the process had an opportunity to counter-offer. It would likely have required some help from a donor, but there are a few people who might have helped. I don't know if Truax, at this point, is as tapped into those resources as Hardt was.

I hope this isn't a sign that Hardt, who hired a number of good coaches at Bucknell, is going to tap into Bison coaches consistently. That would spare him the work of a major search, and he already knows their salaries and contract terms.

I'm grateful for the amazing resuscitation of women's basketball at Bucknell and wish him well as he moves on. That moving on was inevitable.

I thought John Hardt was going to use his insider knowledge to snag ND and that Rousell might have gone P5. The football hire was pretty good, but our administration's approach to hiring under this new AD is far from validated.

At this point, I don't see what the big attraction would be to hire ND. Yes, he has done well on the coaching side - winning thanks to five great players recruited by Dave Paulsen and staff. But thus far, he has yet to hit a home run with a recruiting class. Until he ups his game on that side, I don't see a big reason why an A-10 team would be going crazy to hire him.

IMO, recruiting and coaching are equally as important in college sports. So, I think that Coach Davis has done a very good job since becoming HC. That being said, I can understand why you would feel that "his recruits" need to show something. It will be interesting to see how he does over the next couple of seasons now that Coach Paulsen's recruits are gone.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

Agree. Needs to win a few years with his recruits. Plus it’s not like he turned around a program like Roussel. Not saying he hasn’t been a good coach, just has not earned the big jump for most schools that would consider him. That said, I’m guessing his name has been at least mentioned by some.

I would hope than Jeanine Radice or Brittany Pinkney get serious consideration for the position. Both understand and have helped build the current (winning) culture.

I could see Jeanine getting serious consideration, having been a D1 coach for 27 years, including at least 10 as the associate head coach at Delaware. She was also a great player at Fordham. Brittany has six years as a #3 assistant, so I don't see her as being ready for this level of job at this point.

Article on Roussell's move, from the Daily Item:

https://www.dailyitem.com/sports/roussell-heade d-t...

I knew how much his family liked the Lewisburg community, which I had hoped would persuade him to stay at Bucknell for a long time. But I see in this article that a big factor in his decision was that Molly (his wife) had lived for a number of years in Richmond prior to their marriage, so that area was attractive. Also a good place to raise kids - like Lewisburg.

I know Brittany is going to Richmond with Aaron. Big couple of months for her. She is getting married in May, and I am sure this move is received well with her husband who currently lives in the DC area.

Thanks for that info. It makes sense given that she played her college ball in Richmond and that Molly Roussell was on the VCU staff when she was a player.

Oh, now we have some expressed issues! Stupid Old Bison! If you’re not ahead of the curve you’re behind it. Richmond’s endowment is impressive vis-a-vis our own but maybe if we were a little more forward looking athletically—- donors would be more forward giving!

Has anybody seen the F4 special on Nova’s Championship in ‘85 where Jay Wright says “Rollie Massimino took a small Catholic school and made it a National institution in one year”

Yes, very impressive. A few items of note:

1. She finished 3rd in a field of 31 that included a lot of D1 programs.

2. Her mark yesterday places her 6th on the all-time Bucknell list.

3. As a junior in HS, she cleared 5-8 in States, which is better than any Bison ever.
