Lions swept preseason favorite Yale at New Have. This weekend. Great pitching and defense and enough hitting. Boretti is a great coach.

Enthusiastically agree with you about Boretti. And don't forget the Lady Lions softball team that easily swept Cornell this weekend with a couple of "mercy victories." The current softball team is probably the best in Columbia history.

Championship is actually in 2 weeks, May 18-19 in Allston.

I assume extra week was to accommodate rain outs.

Never count out a Boretti led team.

Quite right, HG. Thanks.

H's game @ Brown tomorrow of some import. If H wins, they're atop the standings alone; a loss means it's a tie with Col, if I have that right!

Thanks to Harvarddadgrad for the clarification. Looks like our softball team plays Harvard for the Ivy League Championship next weekend and our baseball team does the same the following weekend. This is the first playoff ever for Columbia softball. The Lions have a very talented team with several standout players. Junior Madison Camby and freshman Alexa Pinarski are the pitching aces. Camby has won over thirty games for Columbia while Pinarski has had an outstanding freshman season. On offense, frankly, the Lions are loaded from top to bottom, although I have to say that my favorite player is Amanda Nishihira, the 5'3" catcher with explosive power.

How do the final baseball standings compare to the preseason polls.

Interesting. We were the one team which performed up to expectations. Interesting post game interview with Brett Boretti about how competitive the league is this year. I hear that all the time about the other sports but having followed baseball closely this year it really is a true statement and every team was capable of beating every other team. So here’s a plug for Boretti. Year in and year out he finds a way to get it done. I think we have been in the championship series something like five times in the last seven years and while we have had some really good players I do not think we have had an edge in talent. He just knows how to put players in the right places at the right times. His mastery in the last game against Penn was on full display.

I haven't been following closely---when did they get rid of the 2 division format and how do the IL baseball playoffs work?

The format changed last year; the league went from four to three games per weekend (eliminating the 7 inning games), because there were just not enough decent pitchers for four games, and it went to a playoff for the two teams with the best league records. So the two division format was eliminated. I think part of the rationale was that the two best teams overall should play for the championship. Or at least the two teams with the best league record. Had Penn beaten Columbia on Saturday they would have had the same record but Penn would have had the tie breaker.

So Penn needed to sweep the 3 game series and won only 2 of 3.

Did CU play a tougher out of conference schedule? Trying to figure its poor overall record

Yes, Columbia played a somewhat tougher out of conference schedule at the beginning of the year. Columbia opened at Oklahoma, and then played Cal Poly, Northern Florida and Miami whereas Penn also played southern schools Duke and UNC , but finished up with four wins over Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck. Columbia and Penn are both solid squads, and Penn played very well against us, and would have advanced to the Championship Game against Harvard, but for a brilliant pitching performance by Ethan Abrams, some remarkable fielding gems by center fielder, Ben Porter and timely hitting by Liam McGill. Of course, having a great coach like Brett Borretti doesn't hurt. Hope our friends from Penn will be rooting for Columbia to win the playoff series against Harvard.

What happened to Josh Simpson this weekend? He has been our best pitcher.

I don't know what happened to Josh Simpson. Also, I am uncertain why our other ace, Ben Wierski came off the mound early in Game Two. Abrams and Pollack got the job done in Game Three. Incidentally, we do have another solid incoming class with two standout players from New Jersey, three very promising pitchers from Texas, Pennsylvania and New York, and a catcher from Bishop Moore in Florida.
