Why do coaches say stupid things like moving out the 3-pt. line will give offenses more room to maneuver? There's nothing stopping players from shooting from farther back with the current line--any crowding is entirely voluntary.

Because if the 3 pt line moves farther back, the defensive players will move out too, creating more space near the basket. The defense usually guards the line, and is often willing to give up shots from 2-3 feet behind it.

If the offensive players moved back with the current line they’d have just as much room. The new rule creates no new spacing options for the offense.

Only if you assume the defensive player moves out with the offensive player. The offense is free to stand at half court, but the defense usually stays with the three point circle. Moving the line back spreads the defense out too, creating more space for the offense.

If you’re in three-point land and a threat to score, then the defense needs to cover you regardless of how far behind the line you are. It’s not like being near the line magically improves the shooting percentage at a fixed distance.

There is one thing stopping guys from shooting further back from the current line...coaches. It's highly unlikely that 99% of the coaches in CBB would have let Tre Young shoot the ball from where he was shooting when he was in college.

I feel like Curry has broken the taboo on practicing and employing shots out to 30 feet. Saw quite a few college players dropping in bombs from the vicinity of various logos painted on the floor last season.

Dartmouth has a guy who has Curry range. However, you'll never get to see him shoot it in a game. AND, he is one of the best shooters in CBB! There are no plays run to take advantage of his ability to shoot from distance. I'm pretty sure he'd get benched if he pulled up from deep.

I'd be interested to know which CBB teams take the most shots from deep.

Cannady used to pull up for the deep three on occasion.

So would Jackson Donahue.
And he'd miss.
And then he'd miss another.
And then he'd sit down.

I had Donahue at 1-5 from 26+ feet as a rookie (Ivy play only). Sure felt like more, but still he was second to only Matt Morgan in attempts.

(Morgan had 18 that year, all others had 19 combined!)

I guess all coaches and fans are trying to determine how much this impacts their squad.

Harvard played NIT with the longer distance and shot only 10-43 at Georgetown and NC State. Aiken, Baker and Haskett made multiple shots, but Bassey, Kirkwood and Djuricic didn’t.

Assuming Betley comes back healthy this fall, he, Wang and Washington are Penn's proven threats from long range. I think they will adapt well.

Not sure Goodman won't be more affected by the increased distance than the other three.
